I have e-Sword 13.0.0 working on Linux Mint 20.2, and Wine. I installed WMP from https://download.cne...4-10600284.html
I think I had to bypass an authentication check by opening the .exe file and running another .exe file in the package. Anyway got it running. However I cannot get e-Sword to connect to the internet, and as I am not a Linux/Wine expert but complete novice, I am at a loss how to get this working. (Added issue is I am using Linux on a Virtual Machine on Windows 10.)
So the takeaway is e-Sword 13 can be made to run on Linux using Wine, but the above needs to be installed.
P.S. e-Sword took a long time to start, so be patient. However that might have something to do with it trying to find an internet connection and failing.
Hmm rebooted and now nothing working in Wine. Does not seem worth the hassle....
Reinstalled Wine and working again....

Hey Jon, looks like you've been having a bit of fun, mate. Anyhoo, glad everything seems to be working fine for you.

Yes Stephen, it is always fun with Linux Mint 20.2 and WINE, which often ends in a whine, or a moan.
The Internet connection issue is frustrating because other programs I have been testing in WINE like theWord, do connect to the Internet without issue.

On a more serious note, and not having to crack up; that is perhaps one of the major issues one has to contend with when running Windows programs on a totally different platform.
Rick won't develop a Linux version of e-Sword simply because of the huge number of distros running around, and as such, I guess that is one of the pitfalls with Linux. It's much simpler to develop for Mac OS and iOS simply because there are no other distros of those operating systems.
Well, I just am glad that it's worked out for you, and trust that it doesn't go bang on you again.
Blessings,

The programmer actually addresses this:
e-Sword 13 doesn't run on LINUX! Now what?
If you are unable to get the Windows Media Player installed under WINE, then the last stable version of e-Sword on LINUX is version 12.2 which you can download here:
https://www.e-sword...._1220_setup.exe

Bit late in the game, Mate! The issue has been resolved.

Using PlayOnLinux
https://www.playonlinux.com/en/
My Specs:
Linux Mint 19.3 64-bit
PlayOnLinux: 4.3.4
E-Sword mostly works on POL.
But I could not get the Fonts menu to work (so you are stuck with the default settings).
Maybe someone can find a way to make it work?
[ after looking at the debug list, was able to trace the problem to https://www.playonlinux.com/en/topic-8693-SC2_for_POL_on_Unbuntu_1204_fails.html
and running
sudo apt-get install libjpeg62:i386
fixes the Font Settings issue ]
[NOTE: 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) ]
I adapted the steps for GTA2
http://www.gamersonl...o-2-guide.3090/ and The Last Express Guide
http://www.gamersonl...ess-guide.2494/
and I made the following changes….
1. Used Wine version 5.7 6.17 and created a 64 bits windows virtual drive.
2. Wine Configuration.
Application Tab.
Windows version: 10.
3. PlayOnLinux Packages (Components, DLLs, Libraries)
Check the following:
-
POL_Install_corefonts
-
POL_Install_d3dx9 (Since DirectX is employed by most Windows based games and advanced graphics programs)
-
POL_Install_tahoma
-
POL_Install_msxml3 (“a software component of Microsoft Windows Operating System by Microsoft. The core DLL for the Microsoft XML Core Services, this process provides the user with APIs that are compliant with the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) standards for programming XML apps…. a Windows DLL file. DLL is the abbreviation for Dynamic Link Library. DLL files are needed by programs or web browser extensions, because they contain program code, data, and resources.” https://www.file.net...msxml3.dll.html )
-
POL_Install_msxml6 (“The first version of MSXML to provide a 64-bit redistributable package. MSXML6 has made significant improvements over previous versions of MSXML. MSXML6 is intended as an upgrade path for existing MSXML3 and MSXML4 users except for users that leverage some of the older ProgIDs and technologies in MSXML3 and MSXML4.” https://download.cne...4-10725999.html )
-
msls31.dll (allows you to change the app theme; “the library file used by Internet Explorer and Word applications to provide Unicode support. msls31.dll is a system process that is needed for your PC to work properly.” https://www.processl...s/msls31/20463/ )
-
POL_Install_vcrun2010 (this allows e-sword to connect to internet and allow you to download resources; shows up as msvcr100 in wine config after install?)
-
d3dx10 (“Microsoft DirectX is a collection of application programming interfaces (APIs) for handling tasks related to multimedia, especially game programming and video, on Microsoft platforms. A major update to DirectX API, DirectX 10 ships with and is only available with Windows Vista and later; previous versions of Windows such as Windows XP are not able to officially run DirectX 10-exclusive applications. Changes for DirectX 10 were extensive. Many former parts of DirectX API were deprecated in the latest DirectX SDK and will be preserved for compatibility only: DirectInput was deprecated in favor of XInput, DirectSound was deprecated in favor of the Cross-platform Audio Creation Tool system (XACT) and lost support for hardware accelerated audio, since Vista audio stack renders sound in software on the CPU. - Read more at https://www.shouldir...00-program.aspx”
4. Selected and installed
e-sword_1210_setup.exe
Note:
e-Sword 13 doesn't run on LINUX! Now what?

5. Named the Virtual Drive and Shortcut as: Esword
6. Did not specify Video memory size.
Maybe install:
d3dx11 (but causes some text in toolbar to be small?)
d3dcompiler_43
Note: wine 5.11 causes some text in toolbar to be small?
Note: if you change wine version after install, close esword, change wine, and wait a bit for it to update; debugger:
wine: configuration in L"/home/peter/.PlayOnLinux//wineprefix/Esword12" has been updated.
