Hi I've been using e-sword for a number of years on Windows but recently had to adapt to a machine in the church office running on Linux Mint.  I have installed e-sword under WINE and successfully added my paid Bibles etc.  One problem I'm having is that clicking anywhere in the Bible window causes it to jump to another part of the same chapter - clicking on a Strong's hyperlink in NASB+ fails to open the Strong's reference.  Not sure whether this is a problem in settings for 10.3 or something peculiar happening because it doesn't like WINE.  Is anybody else using this setup successfully?

I saved the below instructions. I think they were originally posted on Ubuntu forums. I hope something here helps you.

http://ubuntuforums....34#post12576234

For each PC I simply went to the esword website and downloaded the program. One day it was 10.1 the next it was 10.2. My own installation of esword was working well but with extra dlls as per older threads. So I decided to reinstall not realizing I was downloading 10.2. I was stymied!!

So, until someone figures out how to get tooltips in bibles window and the search function working correctly under 10.2, be sure to install esword 10.1 and follow this:

Hi Dave

I have been running mint 11 and ubuntu 11.10. I am running wine 1.2.3 stable on both systems. The following has worked for me with both systems.

Do this before installing E-sword:

Set oleaut32 to builtin in winecfg

In winetricks install

msls31
msxml3 *
vbrun6
vcrun6
wsh57

Once these are installed you can install E-sword and it should work.

* To install msxml3 winetricks will open an MS download site where you can get the file. Once downloaded put it in: home/user-name/.cache/winetricks/msxml3

To find the .cache type ctl-h while in your home dir to show the hidden files. You my have to reselect the files to have winetricks install them.

Let me know if you have success with the above instructions.

For His Glory,

Frank

Download the install file and follow the instructions in all of the posts.

However, I use Hebrew and Greek Bibles, and most do not render the fonts correctly after this install, just gibberish characters. I have run wintricks to install all the suggested dll's and winecfg to add the rich20 and oleaut32 to the libraries. Still not corrected. Anyone with ideas?

God Bless, Doug
You have to add :
env WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_Esword
for all the tweaks to get it working. Otherwise, the tweak would be install on default wine, which does not affect e-Sword.

Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Hi Derek,

Now I hope I'm correct in this as I hope not to lead you down the proverbial path on this one.

If I am correct, the problem could be in what you have as your default Strong's numbered dictionary. If you have the actual default Strong's Dictionary (the one that comes with e-Sword) then not all the tooltips will appear, particularly numbers with an "a" at the end, e.g., G1353a. So, to check what you have for your Strong's numbered dictionary, in your Options menu, click on Strong's " ToolTip menu item, and if if its not on New American Standard Exhaustive Concordance, then change it over. Also ensure that you have selected the NASEC tab in your dictionary window in order to view the NASB Strong Numbers.

I trust this is helpful to you.

As a matter of interest, I am running e-Sword 10.3, on Windows 8.1, and have no issues with any of the Strong's numbered dictionary.

Blessings,

Hi, I am running E-sword 10.4 under Ubuntu Linux 14.04 and can't get the Strong's tool tips to work in the bible section.  The scripture tool tips pop up fine, but when I hover over the Strong's number in the KJV, there are no pop ups.  I have tried selecting different dictionaries (Strong's, Thayers, Brown-Driver-Brigg's) all with the same results.

I upgraded to 10.4 from 10.3 in hopes it would help, to no avail.

I can type a Strong's reference in the editor and the pop up will work, ie H30 or G2344 and everything is fine, but in the bible section itself, it won't pop up.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

mostly works for me. The only thing that i did differently is i did not follow step 14. "Click on the Libraries Tab, and in the “New override for Library” drop down box, fine Riched20, click add, apply, and ok. Close out of Configure Wine." this did not work for me.

I have NET Bible but the verses do not show up. the NET commentary works fine. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Installing E-Sword on Linux using PlayOnLinux

Using PlayOnLinux
https://www.playonlinux.com/en/

My Specs:
Linux Mint 19.3 64-bit
PlayOnLinux: 4.3.4

E-Sword mostly works on POL.

But I could not get the Fonts menu to work (so you are stuck with the default settings).
Maybe someone can find a way to make it work?

[ after looking at the debug list, was able to trace the problem to https://www.playonli...1204_fails.html

and running

sudo apt-get install libjpeg62:i386

fixes the Font Settings issue ]

I followed the steps for GTA2

http://www.gamersonl...o-2-guide.3090/

except I made the following changes….

1. Used Wine version 5.7

2. Wine Configuration.
Application Tab.
Windows version: 10.

3. PlayOnLinux Packages (Components, DLLs, Libraries)

Check the following:

  • POL_Install_corefonts
  • POL_Install_d3dx9
  • POL_Install_tahoma
  • POL_Install_msxml3
  • POL_Install_msxml6

4. Selected and installed

e-sword_1210_setup.exe

from
https://www.e-sword.net/

5. Named the Virtual Drive and Shortcut as: Esword
6. Did not specify Video memory size.
