Is there a way to change background colors and text on main windows.  I down loaded e sword on my  smart phone and i could get the index in black with white text and scriputres in vanilla background with dark brown text.  Is that possible on e sword loaded on my pc?

Are you referring to MySword on your smart phone?  If so, MySword and e sword are not from the same developer.  You can do many things in MySword that you cannot in e sword and vise versa.
