#43122 Installing e-Sword for Android on a Kindle Fire

Posted by APsit190 on 30 July 2022 - 01:48 AM

I was recently gifted a Kindle Fire 8 tablet and the first thing I wanted to put on it was e-Sword for Android. However I was more then a little surprise to learn that Amazon does not allow Google Play Apps on the Kindle Fire. So I did a little a research and found that is actually possible to access and install apps from Google Play store by taking a few steps and making four quick downloads of apk files to install Google Play on a Kindle.

The information and downloadable files can obtain from a site called How To Geek however here are the required steps:

1. Open the “Settings” app from the “Home” tab on the home screen of the Kindle tablet

2. Go to “Security & Privacy.” on the Settings menu

3. Select “Apps From Unknown Sources". from the “Security & Privacy. menu

4. Find “Silk Browser” on the “Apps From Unknown Sources" screen and then toggle on “Allow From This Source.” This is what will allow you apps from Google Play Store

5 You will need to know which specific model and generation of Kindle Fire your have for the downloads

6. Download the following Apk files to your Kindle Fire:

Google Account Manager apk

Google Services Framework apk

Google Play Services apk

Google Play Store apk

These files will download in to the Files folder on your Kindle Fire

7 Once you have downloaded the apk files return to your KIndle Fire's home screen and open the files folder
8 install the APK files in the following order:

  1. com.google.android.gsf.login
  2. com.google.android.gsf
  3. com.google.android.gms
  4. com.android.vending

The names of the downloaded files will be longer on the Kindle Fire

9 After completing installation of the apk files, reboot the tablet

10 Once the Kindle Fire finishes rebooting you will see a new icon for Google Play Store

11 Tap the Google Play icon and sign into Google Play using your Google Account

12 You will now be able to install Apps from Google Play on your Kindle Fire including e-Sword for Android.

If you have already installed e-Sword for Android on another device you will NOT need to repurchase e-Sword for Android.

I did the above steps on my new Kindle Fire and now I can use e-Sword for Android on it with both excellent screen size and video quality.

As a result of seeing this post, I thought its way to important just leave it as that... A post which can be forgotten. So I created your instructions as a pdf file, and will upload on on here so it can be downloaded for anyone who may need it.

So, thanks for your work in finding out how to go about doing it.

Gotta admit that you are a real blessing at times, and you come in as a very handy person to have around :D

Cheers mate, and Blessings,

Actually, e-Sword versions 11+ and 12+ are all compatible with the new format of module. Support for HTML formatted modules was one of the new features of e-Sword 11, if I'm not mistaken, and that version came out in 2016, if I remember correctly. So a person would have to have a pretty old version of e-Sword not to be able to use the newer module format. Although, if they're still one of those people clinging to Windows XP, they probably have an old version of e-Sword.

That said, using ToolTip, it's pretty easy to make both formats. It's just a matter of whether a person wants to take the trouble to make both. If somebody was only going to make only one format, then go with the .dcti format. It will be more widely compatible than the old one. I personally found that the new format works better or looks better than the old format, even though the old format is still compatible with e-Sword.

Thank you for correcting me on that. And so apologize for that.

Giving this even more thought, when it actually comes to the bblx, cmtx and etc, I don't think they would even be compatible for e-Sword versions 9 and 10 because all resources were done in rtf (rich text format). Currently all 1st party (those produced by Rick Meyers and his gang of merry men) bblx and etc resources are now in HTML (Hyper-text Markup Language) format. Moreover, if memory serves me correctly the only resources that are that are spat out in rtf are ones own Topic, Study, and Journal Notes done in e-Sword.

Another thing as well, and this will need to be checked out and tested. I think that the latest version of T4 spits bblx and etc resources in HTML format (and probably Topic Notes).

Stephen (Phi 1:21).

Well, well, well. That has to be fantastic news.Perhaps one of the best pieces news I've heard of what has happened on this site for a long time.

So, total credits to the person who has been silently working behind the scenes for accomplishing this mammoth task. Mate, that's gotta be AMAZING!!! You know, as in like a WOW kind of a thingy.

So, with that, God bless that person tons, stacks, heaps, oodles, and lots.

And from me...

I found an old image of e-Sword, but it was in bitmap format, and couldn't add it into this the post. So due that difficulty I had to scrub this post.

Sorry about that.

If you don't find your answer here on the developer site https://www.e-sword.net/mac/faq.htm

Contact the developer from the Contact tab to see if the M1 chip makes any difference.

Hey Jon,

Earlier today I got an article in my inbox about the Apple M1 chip. Its, ummm, a very interesting article.

#42485 Margin of white-space on sides of text windows?

Posted by APsit190 on 06 March 2022 - 02:11 PM

Thanks APsit190!

I'm subscribing to your youtube channel and plan to watch the video and try this fix soon!

Get yourself a YouTube downloader extension for your web browser, and then download the video. That way you don't have to try to find it all the time whenever you need to watch it again. If you use Firefox web browser, I recommend the Easy Youtube Video Downloader Express. It's what I use, and find it to be pretty good.

Trust that you find this helpful,

Blessings,

Stephen (Php 1:21)

#42436 Margin of white-space on sides of text windows?

Posted by APsit190 on 28 February 2022 - 02:47 PM

Reply from Rick Meyers, the designer of the e-Sword application. Olaf,

The loss of the left margin occurred when we changed to the third-party control used for text display.
Unfortunately, that control does not conform to all of the CSS formatting we tell it to.
It even ignores the fonts we specify for right-to-left languages, such as Hebrew.

In His service,

Rick Meyers

Oh boy. A couple of observations.

  1. The bug is the 3rd party Text Control itself.
  2. The 3rd party Text Control is as useful as hip-pockets on a T-shirt.

The fix is really easy. Give the 3rd party Text Control the boot, and use the genuine article, like the one that was used in e-Sword 10. Problem fixed and no longer an issue.

Now if that cannot be achieved, then write your own control; even in VB (e-Sword is written in Visual Basic). See Screenshot below:

See, told ya so :P :D

This is the place being mentioned.

There is a difference between es 10 and es 13

e-Sword 13

Hi Jon,

My guess that this is a bug with the Text Control that Rick is using for version 13, or that he didn't set a Margin value in the Properties for the Text Control. Whichever the way this is, I think that this is something worth reporting, and to see what Rick's response is.

When reporting this issue, it would be worth your while to include those Screenshots showing what those potential bugs are. And if there is a fix for them, then that would be fantastic.

Have a good one, bro.

#42318 e-Sword User's Guide [Updated for e-Sword 10.2.1]

Posted by APsit190 on 10 February 2022 - 07:22 AM

As society progresses it appears that people have got used to just saying Hay Siri, Hay Google, ALEXA!, stating their wish and getting an answer... They don't want to be wasting time watching videos and reading manuals or searching forums, or the developers FAQ.

Hey Jon,

That's not progress, its actually called laziness. People just don't want to put in the yards to find the answer. Moreover, what if Siri and/or ALEXA can't or doesn't give them the answer they want? Pretty much stuffed after that.

Another thing is that technology is quite limited in what it can do despite how advanced it gets. Just drop a nuke and wipe everything out... how good Siri or ALEXA would be then?! Stuffed!

Hey Josh,

Me thinks that there are people starting to voice their concerns over the lack of security here, mate. Like, they seem to be concerned about their privacy, and such things like hackers breaking in stealing data.

#42294 downloading to esword on ipad/Mac

Posted by APsit190 on 03 February 2022 - 07:16 PM

A few years ago (as to actually how long ago, just can't remember) I shared an idea of where members can download a resource of any particular resource for a particular platform by simply click on the image. Moreover, if it was implemented, it certainly would save a heap of time trying to find it.

Now I reckon that something like this (as seen in the above example) would be a real hit, and make life a lot easier.

Your thoughts.

#42269 Post e-Sword Module Requests Here

Posted by APsit190 on 01 February 2022 - 02:55 PM

Apparently it is going to be availble per the information on the website:

Work continues on the LSB Footnotes and Strong’s numbers. Once that work is completed, the information will be included in a Master File for the LSB. After formatting and review,  programming files will be available for Accordance, Logos, Literal Word, e-Sword, and other software developers to do their work. An estimated release date for some apps and software that include the Footnotes and Strong’s Numbers is spring of 2022.

Hey Higgs, Thanks for the information.

Guess what?

We now all know what's going (or not going) to happen. Cool hey!

#42238 Uninstall modules?

Posted by APsit190 on 28 January 2022 - 03:54 PM

I have no experience with the new Android version of e-Sword, but I expect that the procedure is similar to that used in iOS.

Yup, you're right there is a procedure, and its relatively simple and straight forward to do.

On this video I broke a record... the shortest video I've done - just a tad over 3 minutes. I can't believe it.

Anyhoo, If you find this information helpful, click on the "Like This" button, and also subscribe to me YouTube channel and click on the notification bell, and click on the thumps up button. All this helps in the algorithms. And we gotta definitely do that.

Have fun and God Bless yas and God love yas all heaps, tons, stack, oodles, and lots.

Phone them to be sure. However from what I understand it is the one format that works on all Apple devices.

Hi Jon,

Yep, it does. All resources with an "i" in it (e.g. bbli, cmti and etc) are made for e-Sword LT (iPhone), HT (iPad) and X (Mac devices), and therefore Mr Yak should not have a problem using it on his iOS device.
