Hi there,

 

I have recently downloaded learn_to_read_biblical_hebrew reference module and successfully loaded it onto mc PC version of e-sword.  I have gotten a bit into it and now realise that the Hebrew characters aren't being displayed.  In stead of the hebrew characters for "king" in the "Why Learn Hebrew" page, i see "%,l,m".  (I have checked the fonts settings for e-sword - it is set for "TITUS Cyberbit B".  When i open a Hebrew bible it displays the Hebrew words perfectly.)  So, what is needed to see the Hebrew characters in the reference module?

 

Possibly a separate matter, but i will need to convert the module for use on my iPad down the track.  If needed, are you able to direct me how to get the Hebrew characters to appear in this module on the iPad?  I have the utility to convert the module (version 1.8.1).

The module of Jeff A. Benner used a bad encoding and is phonic.
See SLRH-08 part 1 The Alephbet
% as Final Kaph is not listed in the list (but the % replaced the $ symbol).
And you need to read from right to left.
The biggest problem for converting to Hebrew script are the vowel symbols.

 

Here is a better version: (but the Hebrew letters are not in standard Unicode).

The letter w is used for the long vowel O and the letter y not always used for the letter Jot or Yod in transliteration.

You need to install this font 'BST Hebrew' http://www.pement.org/hebfonts.htm

It was an old way to display the characters before Unicode. You simply used the English keyboard, which is why you for the lack of the corresponding font see the 'symbols'.

It would be a good idea for such modules to state that it is legacy font encoded.

 

However if Niobi is up for it.

 

Looks like Jeff has an updated version/s in epub format that could be converted (Using Calibre to rtf format, etc) to use in e-Sword etc, and would use 'proper' fonts and encoding. http://www.ancient-h...re/e-books.html

I convert this module from the Word version. It has been a while back when I had my modules on my 3 Terabytes. I lost  20 gigs of modules plus other resources. I will not be able to fix this module.

Katoog, thanks for the PDFs. I think it will be just what I need so I can find out what I need to find out. As they are PDFs, they will port easily to the iPad.

JPG, loading the font will help me with the PC version but I am not sure how it will help me with the version that I will convert to use on the more mobile iPad. It isn't clear whether I can load ad-hoc fonts into the iOS environment. I am not prepared to jail-break.

Patchworkid, I feel for your loss. When "data disappears, even strong men cry", as I have heard it said.

That said, I am not launching (I think) into a detailed scholarly understanding of OT Hebrew. Rather, I am seeking just that "little bit more" to help me to overcome the shortcomings of Strongs in my use of the Hebrew OT in parallel with the OT passages I am reading. Strongs certainly gives a "word meaning sense" but lacks the information on the word in its local context (person, number, article, case, etc) that permits investigation of the meaning in context. I read somewhere else that understanding the Hebrew mindset of the day is almost more important than an accurate understanding of of Hebrew itself. Perhaps I need to delve there, as well, in time to come.
