Ok, I'm slow and just figured out what a huge size difference there is between Topx and Refx files. Some files are actually 6 times smaller, but nearly all are at least half the size of the Topx file. I just converted a couple of files within e-Sword and was amazed at the size difference - with no loss of any kind. So, why aren't Refx files used more often? Would it be possible to make a converter that would be faster than doing one at a time from within e-Sword?

If I understand correctly, there is no extra benefit of a Topx file except that it can be edited. If the file is finished and good, why not make it a Refx file and save all that space? I'm currently thinking that there is no reason to keep a file in the Topx format unless there is still work to do on it.

Right, I think everything you said is correct about topx vs refx. I use the refx format almost all the time.

On why there's no automated or mass conversion method: I think that's because hard drive space is so cheap. If a person had 200 megabytes of topx files, and they saved 100 or 150 with Refx, then it would be meaningless on a computer made within the last 5 years. And the average e-Sword user probably doesn't even have that many.

I think that would be the answer you would get from Rick Meyers.

I can tell you this - I'm glad the older "pump and dumps" aren't locked into the .refx format....

Thanks for the information. I just changed 3 files, and I think that I'll leave the rest alone. No, I wouldn't want a mass conversion tool now.  :)
