Is there a way to view pdf files within e-Sword or convert them to a topx module? I tried converting a pdf to a rtf, that looked ok, but then it lost a lot of formatting when the rtf was opened in ToolTip Tool NT.

No it can't, and there is an important reason for it, which is:

e-Sword is a database reader which reads database files. PDF files are not database files.

As to converting pdf files to a text file, yes you can. Simply click on Save as your pdf reader, open the file in an rtf editor, then save the file as an rtf file, then import that rtrf file into any of the note editors of your choice.

Try converting the pdf to a MS-Word document then saving the MS-Word document as an RTF
