HI I would like this "If we create a forum where you can post what your working on IF you want to, would that solve this issue? Or no? If you wanted to post as a courtesy, you could. And if you'd rather not post what your working on, then you would not. After all, we're all volunteers, no one is in charge of anyone, and no one answers to me for anything."

Yes Please do so. For me I am working on this Lange's cmt and like you said Josh it is a big project. Thanks to BH for helping me fix the ABBR Tool Tipping this huge cmt is much easier less proof reading over and over.

thanks again

Josh, I think be able to post what we're working on may be a good thing. I can't help but think of the Scripture which states; "But all things must be done properly and in an orderly manner. " (1 Cor 14:40) All of us are volunteers in this the Lord's work and thus it should behoove us to do it properly and in an orderly manner, which in turn gives glory to God.

Yes, this might work. Is it scalable....I have my doubts. Problems increase exponentially as more people are added to any community; more than just an addition problem. I fully do expect this community to expand beyond anyone's expectation as the social and political scene continues to be unstable - people are going to get very hungry for answers. In fact, I believe that's already happening.....

Properly and in an orderly fashion? Ya, sure, sounds good to me - let's do it like Gideon did! ROFL

Would this work with 40,000 members (i.e. is this solution scalable)? If this isn't the right fix for when membership grows, what would be the right fix?

Josh

No Josh, I don't believe you're out in left field - eventually something will be needed to keep track of resources being developed.

On a strictly volunteer basis, to open up a Forum thread....I don't know, it might work. Is it scalable for a large community? I have my doubts. I'm not a prophet (regardless of my Pentecostal background - LOL), but this might be humble enough to actually work! :) Let's do it and let God decide.

Alright folks, here is the new subforum of the Modules Forum, called "Modules in Progress".

http://www.biblesupp...es-in-progress/

When I get back in town, I'll evaluate what I'm going to do next and post it there. I'll be checking in on the site with my Droid phone, but won't be working on much over the Holiday weekend.

It is scalable, and will work if a couple of specific conditions are imposed:
  • Posting to the specific forum is voluntary;
  • Only list works in progress;
  • One work per thread;
  • No wish lists allowed;
  • No lists of works to be converted;

Sooner or later some sweet soul is going to knock on our front door with a big gift of modules in a non-English format.

My current guestimate is that a third of the resources for e-Sword are in a language other than
English. Spanish is the second most popular language for resources. For at least forty languages, the only publicly distributed resource is a Bible.

Here, however, is what I believe needs to be done - but will it be done is the question.
1] Keep track of all databases that have e-Sword modules (BibleSupport.com, Dr. Dave, David Cox, etc.)

I used to distribute a list, with quarterly updates, of all known e-Sword resources. It took between 80 and 120 hours to do a single update. The biggest criticisms of it were:
  • It included resources that were not publicly available;
  • One could not download the resource using the provided URLs. URLs linked to the page that described the resource, not the download link on the page;
  • It was not complete;
  • It contained too many duplicate listings;
Later this week I'll be posting a list of the currently available non-gratis resources for e-Sword. (Premium e-Sword resources, http://www.blessedtr...net/modules.asp omits non-gratis resources that are offered at sites other than eStudySource.com, and e-Sword.net.)

I've been considering ressurecting Currently Available e-Sword Resources as an SQLite database. However, I've got a number of other projects that take up a lot of time.

2] Keep track of all possible resources to make into modules.

There are literally millions of possible resources to convert. What is reasonable is to list URLs for a sites that host lots of material that potentially can be converted into e-Sword format.

3] Keep track of all resources being converted into modules.

Something like Modules in Progress at http://www.biblesupp...es-in-progress/ is the most practical way to track this. It won't be complete, but it will be a starting point.

4]Standardize the Author's name on the title of the modules, getting rid of duplicates and placing modules into collections.

+1

I don't have the time to do it, but just going through the resources offered here, and identifying duplicates would be a start.

5] Merge all these database's into one easily viewable, easily understandable, without a lot of qualifiers, easily updated chart or graphic. I do not think a simple list will work because of it's limitations, especially if all possible non-converted resources were added.

An SQLite database would be the most practical way to create and distribute that information. The big issue here is who will do the data input. Crowdsourcing might work.

6] This chart/graphic/data should be available to anyone interested in knowing - that's it entire purpose, to guide those who inquire.

There are literally millions of works that could be converted into e-Sword format. I don't know how practical it would be to list everything in one database. At a minimum, you are looking at:
  • Name of work
  • Author of work;
  • Year of first publication: hard copy;
  • Date that the e-Sword resource was created;
  • Resource creator;
  • URL of resource;
  • Size of resource;
  • Hash value of resource;
  • Type of resource;
  • Copyright status of resource;
  • Status of resource;
  • Description of resource;
  • Resource abbreviation;
  • Requester;
I suspect that additional fields will be required, especially if "working on", and "wish list" items were included. Even more fields would be requried if it included "potential content to convert".

7] Lastly, here's that can of worms again.... Some modules should not be posted on this site, if it's a Christian site.

Comedian Elmo Phillips used to tell this story:

Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, “Don’t do it!” He said, “Nobody loves me.” I said, “God loves you. Do you believe in God?”
He said, “Yes.” I said, “Are you a Christian or a Jew?” He said, “A Christian.” I said, “Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?” He said, “Protestant.” I said, “Me, too! What franchise?” He said, “Baptist.” I said, “Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?” He said, “Northern Baptist.” I said, “Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?”
He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist.” I said, “Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?” He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region.” I said, “Me, too!”
Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?” He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912.” I said, “Die, heretic!” And I pushed him over.

Hi Laurence,
If you already have the raw text for it, then there are two ways you can do this.
  • Use T4.
  • Use SQLite Database Manger or Browser.
If you already know the language, as in able to speak and read it, and are going to type it, again use either of the above two option.

Another tip is rather than creating a new Database file, is to use an existing 3rd party Bible file and simply replace the text with the one you are using. If the text is Roman (like in English) then the Language setting doesn't have to be changed, but if the text is non Roman, but something like Chinese or something like that, then you will need to make the following changes in the Database file.
  • In the DB Settings page, change the UTF setting from UTF-8 to UTF-16le to give the ability to read right to left, if that is required for that language
  • In the Details Table change the language setting From DEFAULT to the language you are using, e.g CHINESE or whatever the Language is
  • Again, in the Details Table in RightToLeft Field, type in the number 1. This shows e-Sword to display the text right to left.
Then after that you should be home and hose.
