Can any one help me I have just upgraded from v. 8 to 10 and sthe study notes (among others) has the file extension changed from ".not" to ".notx", I have tried renaming the olf file ".notx", but this does not seem ot work. Any advice on what to do and what directory it needs to be in?

The old version had a file import feature that no longer seems available.

Many thanks in advance.

There is a useful user guide you can download from this site (see bottom status bar of this web page)

Chapter 10: The Study Notes, should be able to clarify.

As from version 9x of e-Sword, the database system has changed. The .not files are from MS Access Database system, as where the .notx are from the SQLite Database system. The .not, .top, .bbl and etc files for e-Sword 8x are not compatible for 9x and 10x versions of e-Sword.

To convert all your e-Sword 8x third party resources to be compatible for e-Sword 9x, follow Niobi's advice:

The easiest way to get version 8 Notes file (.not) into version 10 (.notx) is to start e-Sword, display the Note window, Press the CTRL key and RIGHT CLICK your mouse on the pane and select OPEN.  In the Lower Right of the Open dialog box, you can change from NOTX to NOT and open your old file.  It will now be saved as a NOTX file.
