Josh,
I'm running Firefox 7x on my 'puter, using Windows XP, and to date I've have had no issues with downloading any files from here. The only time I strike a problem with downloading is when I use my download manager when there is no zip or exe extension to the file. For some reason the Download Manager just doesn't recognize files without a zip or exe extension.

Blessings,
Stephen (Php 1:21).

Good to hear. When you say "Download Manager"--what is that? In Firefox, I can click Tools/Downloads and see a list of files currently downloaded as well as previously downloaded files. Is that it?

Hi Josh,
Usually when I download files (usually software) I use an independent standalone download manager. This is downloading (and in some cases uploading) files independent of a Web browser.

See Screenshot below:

The beaut thing about using an external Download Manager is that you can control your downloads. Moreover you can also do multiple downloads.

Some download mangers have, such as this one shown in the screenshot, have uploading and torrent capabilities.

I trust this is helpful to you.

Blessings,
Stephen (Php 1:21).

Journey,

As an experiment, could you create an account and download several files from this site: http://invisionfocus.com/files/ Just pick some files at random to download (free ones, of course).

That site also runs IPBoard. That will tell us if your Firefox is having problems with just this site or with all IPBoard sites. If it happens on all IPBoard sites, then I can work with you to try to replicate this issue so I can report it as a bug. Right now, I am unable to reproduce this problem on any of my three Windows computers (Vista, Windows 7, and XP). I'm running Firefox 7.0.1 on my computers. If the problem happens only on BibleSupport.com, and not on other IPBoard sites like the one above, then that can help point us in the right direction too.

When you report back with what happened on the test downloads, can you also report your version of Firefox (click Help/About) as well as your version of Windows?

Thanks,
Josh

Hello Josh,

I did as you asked and had the same identical problem there - no extensions on the downloaded files.

I'm running an up to date version of Windows Vista, and my version of Firefox is 7.0.1. I download a variety of files every day - usually related to Bible study, and I've not experienced any problem like this. I also didn't get any error messages. What was downloaded here was the right size and the file was good once I renamed it with the right extension. This is no big deal for me, so I'm certainly not complaining. I only mentioned it in case the other user was experiencing the same thing. I'll do some more checking, but I'm not aware of any settings on my end that could effect just this brand of board. I use several Christian boards every day, but none with this brand. I'll also check my profile settings here to see if there might be something I missed in my account setup here.

Hello Again Josh,

All of my problems were with the built-in download functions of Firefox. I just did some more tests with a Firefox download manager called Flashgot here, and I got everything correctly. I've had Flashgot installed for a long time, but I rarely use it. So, this tells me that the problem is narrowed down to the built-in download functions of Firefox and this brand of Board. This is all very strange, but I hope it helps someone else in some way.

Thank you, Journey, for testing this. So what we know is your Firefox doesn't like IPBoard's downloads. Beyond that, we don't know. I'll keep this in mind going forward, but I can't reproduce this on my Vista pc with Firefox 7.0.1, else I would report it as a bug.

1) From the Firefox download screen, right click the cmtx file you downloaded and choose "Open Containing Folder":

2) Windows Explorer appears with the file you downloaded highlighted. Right click the file you downloaded and click copy:

3) After clicking copy, go to your e-sword folder, as shown below. Your e-Sword folder might be:

c:\program files\e-sword

-or-

c:\program files (x86)\e-sword

4) Right click on the screen, and choose "Paste"

5) Restart e-Sword

I have a raw beta program I wrote that takes over the e-Sword file associations in Windows. And when you double-click an e-Sword resource, it copies it to the appropriate folder automatically. I never finished it (procrastination). When I do, I may call on you to help test it on your version of Windows.

Josh

Dear Josh;

I have tried everything you posted and I still have the same problem. Half of what I download goes to E-sword but I can't bring it up . Most Commentaries do not come up. one or two came up under Topic Notes. I am a neophite PC user and very slow to get the hang of things technical. I apreciate any help you can give.

Thanks,

HRoberts

May God change our hearts to what the truth is

2Ti_2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Rom_9:16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.

2Ti 2:24-25  And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

Hi Hank,

Sorry I haven't had time to work on the program. Brent Hildebrand took it over and is working on some proof of concept code. It may be a while before he has time to pursue it like he wants to. The tricky part is getting this to work on older versions of Windows.

In the mean time, you just need to copy the e-sword resources into the e-sword folder. Once you do that, they will appear. I'm almost as certain as I can be that the resources are not in your e-Sword folder.

I wish I could help you further. But I've already given instructions on doing this. There isn't a work around or another way, unfortunately. The resources must be in either the program files\e-sword folder or the my documents\e-sword folder. Otherwise, e-Sword simply cannot find them. :( If e-Sword isn't finding numerous resources, the only explanation I know if is they are not in the right folder. I wish there was something more I could do for you.

I wonder if 'hide extensions for known file types' is checked, and this is why there is no extension showing...? I don't know if any module creator would leave an extension off...?

I'm using Firefox 7.0.1 with XP and there is no issue for me. I manage a project on one forum and mod on another, both use IPB since 2.x, now at 3.2.3, and Firefox is pretty popular on the forums, no issues reported.

The only thing I know to do is deep search the system for the files, including hidden folders. I would also create one central download location C:\Downloads, have all files drop in this directory. This is smart anyway, you want to scan all files first before extraction right...? :)

Firefox is easy to setup. Go to Tools - Options - General - Save files to - Browse to the folder you created.

I also wonder if some of the files are in \My Documents\e-Sword, the Editor wont make them visible...?

The files are on the system somewhere, you will need the file names (only the user knows what files they downloaded), extensions are less important, do a thorough search. Then setup a download manager or browser to download to one location - every file will always be there, and don't auto extract anything, scan the files first.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
