Hi all,

I would like to know who or how many people use Cross References (TSK) in their Bible Study?

Would you like to share your own cross references?
My example is:
Rom 4:17b - calls (declare) those things = Isa 46:10 - declaring the end from the beginning = Job 22:28 - decree... this (example) will be in my Study Bible set.

Thank you for your input.

Hi Rick B, Thanks for your input.

I will have a large amount of cross references in the cmt and dict. In the Cmt the style of cross reference will be like a rabbit trail. It will have you going everywhere.

I will tie as many scriptures as I can to give the people a clear image (much like connecting the dots). You know when we was kids we played around with connect the dots to see the picture. Years ago they came out with light bright - connect the dot (lights pegs) and you turn the light out and you see a picture in the dark. well take that to the Word. You connect the dots of scripture (light of the world) it (Revelation of God's Word) shines in this dark world we (are passing by on to Heaven).

So I am also looking forward to my Study Bible Set (I am making this as well to Teach God's Word).

Thanks again,
Niobi aka Patchworkid

Cross References can be useful, but only when the reason for the cross-reference is "immediately" apparent.
For example:
  • Genesis 3:7 cross referenced to Leviticus 20:13 and Romans 12:6;
  • Deuetonomy 8:3 cross-referenced to Revelation 7:16;
There are doctrinal reasons for those cross-references, but given "cold", as I did here, ponder upon how long it would take an individual to make the appropriate connections, and understand why they are cross-referenced.

Thou can use "my" cross-references of the Restored Holy Bible.
There is no copyright on it. :)

The commercial NASB+ module has what is essentially a center line concordance using tool tip style blue R (for scriptural references) and N (for notes).

I use it from time to time, though I prefer to use my paper Bible' center line because then I can use my e-sword macros to look up the verses in the reference without loosing my place (besides the references aren't tool tipped).

I suppose that using e-sword hot keys would work too, but I have never been able to get them to work for me.
Thus says the LORD, "Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, (Jeremiah 9:23-24a)

"Defenders of the faith are inclined to be bitter until they learn to walk in the light of the Lord. When you have learned to walk in the light of the Lord, bitterness and contention are impossible." --Oswald Chambers, in Biblical Psychology from The Quotable Oswald Chambers.

Niobe.... As a teacher for over 30 yrs. .....works like TSK...or Nave's/Torrey's Topical Textbooks have
been simply invaluable to me. Not only to teach myself by....but to allow the Bible to define and comment on itself....to those I teach ! I'd love to look at and use your Cross References. If God has prepared you to create this kind of work....it doesn't even matter if we use such works....do it because God has led you to do it !!!
I would like to add this.....Jonathon has offered some very wise counsel about the usefulness and
accuracy of Cross References....(plus they can artfully conceal mis-application and false doctrine as well)
Do what you know God wants you to do !

Thank you Dartmaster644 4for your encouraging words.

To really get as many cross references out will take years. But I will work it out of me. (With God's Help).

I also like Rom 1:20 - [liken unto] taking things of this world, earth, physical, natural, visible things and relate them to the Spirit, Heaven. This style of understanding will continue till Christ comes.

steady working.

thanks again

http://www.esv.org/a...08.01.model.png is an interesting diagram on how people study the Bible. It probably would be useful to keep it in mind, when constructing cross-references, or other critical apparatus.

On second thoughts, make that "useful to keep in mind", when coding Biblical Software in general.

The attached files from the ESV might give you an idea of how many more cross-references are still to be found, for your project.
I have a spreadsheet from ESV, that has either number of cross-references per chapter and book, or the actual cross-references themselves. (From a casual examination, it might contain both of those datapoints.)

A couple of years ago, I read about a Bible that claimed to include more than 1,000,000 cross-references, in the hard copy edition. That would be an average of 32.1 cross-references per verse, for the 66 Book Protestant Canon. Even if the Orthodox Canon was used, the average number of cross-references per verse is 26.6. Either way, that looks like way too many cross-references to be effectively utilized by all but the most adroit scholar.

Broken up into a dozen or more books (or for e-Sword, commentary resources ) that many cross-references could well be an asset to the average individual, provided the resources were broken up in a easilly identifiable manner.
