greetings to the administrators:

when we type the user name in google
people are able to visit our profile
and we can even get to know the recent activities of the user?(any downloads etc)

i appretiate the huge amount of efforts that are put into the architecturing of this website
its really cool

but for most of the users who have created an account just for the sake of downloading modules for esword
its quite bad news to have your user name and profile seen in public on google

i will feel happy if we have some options for securing our privacy?

and want to know if we can delete our id from this web site?
(i didnt find an option to completely delete an account from this website)

please excuse me if i've posted this in the wrong area

any effort to look into this issue of privacy would be of great help

So, someone can google your name, "moduledownload" and see the modules you've downloaded for e-Sword? If you don't want your real name connected with e-Sword, change your name. But, are you using your real name? Don't use your real name if you want privacy.

Would you like me to delete your account?

I understand your privacy concerns.
(I think I made public my blog post about why the cloud, and Biblical softare should be mutually exclusive.)

The Internet is a privacy hostile place.

We are at the point, where the user name at a specific site no longer hides identity. Nonetheless, to minimize privacy intrusions, one should use a different login name for every site one goes to. If those sites allow users to have two, or more accounts, then don't delete your existing account, but simply abandon it.

There are roughly 1,500 sites that should be blocked on general principles, becuase their sole function is to track your web usage. A further 500 to 1,000 sites should be blocked, except when on those specific sites. The most reliable way of doing that blocking, is to set up your own dns server that all data routes through. All of those sites should be redirected to 127.0.0.1 or 10.0.0.1.

Whilst that might reduce functionality on some sites, I'll simply point to what somebody else dubbed "Jonathon's Law":

The more scripts, the less useful the information.
The more flash, the more garbage in the content.

On Firefox, Adblock Plus, NoScript, Better Privacy, and Beef Taco, when installed, configured correctly, and used in conjunction with each other, eliminate about 70% of the privacy invaders that infest the Internet.

IOW, don't rely on website designers and maintainers to protect your privacy.

Click your name in the upper, right corner. Click My Profile. Click Edit My Profile. Click Display Name. Enter something other than your real name? If you want privacy, don't use your real name. :)

Hi Josh,
Actually I think you should give the User the ability to have the option to keep his/her account "private," in that if he/she chooses not to have is screen name or any part of his/her details made known. Just having a different name other than the real name isn't good enough. Moreover, if a user wishes to close/cancel his/her membership, that option should also be available.

I don't know what the Privacy laws are in the US, but I would think that if you don't provide privacy/security options for those wishing to join this site, you could be held liable for it. I admit I could be wrong here, but if I'm not, then my advise is, "do something about it or your thingy could get fried."

Blessings,

On this website, we don't ask for personal information. And we only have it, if you gave it to us, unsolicited by us. Thus, privacy is only an issue if you intentionally reveal information about yourself. The one exception to "personal information" could be email addresses, but those aren't displayed to the publicly available in a profile.

Why in the world would anyone concerned about privacy use their legal name, when we don't ask for it? "Display Name" is asked for in the signup process. That's the name that will be displayed on the message boards, on your member profile, the name provided as the "Uploader" if you upload a file. This is how message boards work all over the Internet.

It's kind of like driving a car in downtown traffic and then complaining that you don't have any privacy--because you put your name on the side of your car. You might say: "I should have the right to drive downtown without everyone knowing my name is John Doe". I would reply: "You're right--so take it off the side of your car."

Hi Josh,
Ok, got that one sorted. But what about a member wishing to close his account? You don't have an option for that person to do this. Should this be a basic thing available if he/she wishes to opt out?

Hey there,

This site runs on IPBoard. IPBoard doesn't offer the option to delete your own account.

As far as I know, there's not a privacy difference in not logging into the site anymore --versus-- deleting your account. Either way, you're not here.

What I can, though, is disable Google and other search engines from viewing biblesupport.com/user/... which will stop indexing of user profiles. That's fairly useless anyway, and maybe even negative for search engine ratings (although we're already as high as we can go in search engine ranking for most e-sword terms). I also disabled guests from viewing profiles, again aimed at keeping search engines from indexing profile pages.

Hi Josh,
That's rather slack of them, isn't it? Maybe they need a kick up there thingy. (I just love those thingy things).

Anyway, mate, thanks for clearing all of that stuff up, and hope that everyone understands the craziness of IPBoard.

Either way, you're not here

Heeelp, I'm lost! I dunno where I am!
