#17644 e-Sword 10.2 Sneak Peak [Now Released]

Posted by Marvin on 29 June 2013 - 11:36 AM

I for one am especially looking forward to the bookmarks in the atlas section and the topix section. It will considerably simplify my studying by allowing me to jump back and forth between refrences without having to search for the page where I left off previously.

:)

#16237 e-Sword Wish List

Posted by Marvin on 15 March 2013 - 08:06 AM

I would like to see something in the Atlas section so that when I leave one map to look at another, I can get my former map back easily. Currently when you leave a given Atlas to view another, upon returning to the previous Atlas, it has defaulted to its first map.

#16143 Difficulty in Topic Notes

Posted by Marvin on 07 March 2013 - 09:44 AM

Over the last two or three days I have been creating a topic in the e-Sword editor, mostly made up of verses that I have collected on the subject of "Law of Liberty" which was the title of the topic. Every time I made one or two changes, I saved by pressing the save icon. Yesterday, I logged into e-Sword and my topic was greyed out. That is, the words were all in grey instead of black. I could not do anything with my cursor. It would not even move. After a few abortive attempts to do almost anything from select some words change the left right alignment, my whold topic went blank. I tried exiting e-Sword and re-entering but the topic was still blank.

I had already printed the latest version of my topic so I just scanned it and OCR'ed it and put it into my Libra Office word processor.

Then I went back to the blank topic in e-Sword and deleted it. When I did, another topic appeared with the same title. It covers the same material but in a totally different manner than the newer deleted topic and it had a number of different Bible passages. It appears to be one that I did several months ago on the same subject and may have actually had the same title. I would have thought that e-Sword would have stopped me from using the same title twice if that was a problem. Nevertheless, have I found a bug? Is there some way to insure that this never happens again? Can anyone even give me a clear picture of what's going on?

Thanks :)

Thank you, Baunllaw. I don't normally make that mistake. I must have been really tired last night.

#14767 e-Sword HotKey

Posted by Marvin on 18 December 2012 - 02:02 PM

I love HotKey. I have become an addict to it since the last changes in March 2012. I use it in all of my Bible study outlines. (I make a LOT of Bible study outlines.)

I had an idea for an improvement that would help me and which might help others. I would like to see a choice in the Macro->Version box to automatically paste the Bible version that is currently selected in e-Sword. That way, the outline (other work) would go hand-in-hand with my studying.

God bless you for making this excellent program.

#10679 The Pulpit Commentary for e-Sword: Born Again

Posted by Marvin on 04 July 2012 - 09:41 PM

This is wonderful! I have a physical Pulpit Commentary setting just to my left, yet I tended to go to the Pulpit Commentary in e-Sword out of convenience. The formatting and fonts were not what I liked and some things were missing but I used it because of convenience. Nevertheless, sometimes I had to pull a volume of my physical commentary off the shelf, dust it off and look up my references in it. I am grateful for the old e-Sword Pulpit Commentary. I am VERY grateful for my physical Pulpit Commentary which I bought over 40 years ago from a retired preacher for $50 (which I could hardly afford at the time.) Now I am VERY VERY grateful for the new smoothly formatted Pulpit Commentary with everything that my physical volumes have in them.

The Pulpit Commentary has been my primary commentary of choice for 40 years. This new e-Sword commentary may last me through the next 40. The fact that it is free is just an added attraction. I hope that the people who use e-Sword realize what a blessing it is to have all of these volumes for free. I spent money that I nearly could not afford at a time when it was difficult to afford the daily essentials just to build up my Bible reference library. Now all these classics are available for free or nominal prices in e-Sword! Thank You James Rice for your many hours of work. This e-Sword user really appreciates what you and others like you are doing.

#10232 Window Auto Hide

Posted by Marvin on 20 June 2012 - 09:00 AM

The missing window should be on one of the edges of your screen as a rectangular tab. Click on that to bring the window back. You will still need to click on the Auto-hide pin in the corner or the window will disappear again when you use a different window. :)

#9237 Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Commentary

Posted by Marvin on 18 May 2012 - 09:32 PM

There are times when I want to read a real book. When I was in the U. S.Navy (1970-19090), I attempted to take as large a theological library with me as I could on board ship when I was deployed. I brought a good reference library and purchased a microfilm library of non-copywrighted reference materials from AMG Publishers in microfische along with a portable battery/socket powered microfische reader. I mannaged to squeeze all of that into one seabag and a carry-on soft bag along with my complete complement of required uniforms. etc. I did a lot of Bible teaching in cooperation with the Chaplains Department. That had to serve us for six to ten months. I got used to a paperless reference library. That technology has since gone the way of the dodo. Now, as I mentioned in a previous post, I have a very complete reference library on my Kindle. I had to purchase most of my Bibles and reference books, but they are much cheaper on a Kindle than they are in paper. I have already mentioned that if you get a true (non color) reader using electronic ink technology, you only need to recharge your battery every week or two. (They advertise up to four weeks but I am a very heavy user.) The screen is not self lighted. That way I can read in bright sunlight when the glare would fade out a normal tablet screen. If you get a good case for your reader, it probably has a light built in for times when you can't get a normal light. Remember that you need a light to read paper books too. I have used my built in case light a few times but it has rarely been necessary. Amazon has a great guarantee on their Kindle. I have already used it once when my Kindle screen went bad. If your Kindle goes bad for any reason, they will replace it with an updated equivalent model of your original Kindle for $40. When you get the new Kindle, Amazon has a list of all of the books that you have already purchased in your account. A list of those books is downloaded to your new Kindle and you just upload the books you want by clicking on the relevant titles (not just Bile referene materials). I had my complete library restored within three or four hours of receiving the new kindle through the mail. Total down time was about four days. My reader has 4 Gigabytes of memory. I have used less than 1 Gigabyte of that and I am a heavy reader.

Would I give up paper reference books? Not on your life. Nevertheless, the paperless method sure does help instead of carrying a much larger Bible to church and is great if I need to travel with a complete reference library. I think that a good electronic ink technology reader has solved most of the problems mentioned by people here using tablets for their portable Bibles. A tablet is not a reader. Tablets have their purpose. E-readers have theirs. Tablets may be used as readers with a number of disadvantages. Readers may be used as tablets with an equal number of different disadvantages. If you really want a paperless reference library consider a good reader. (I just wish they had had readers back when I had to lug my microfische reference library on board ship for each cruise.)

#8049 e-Sword 10.1 Released

Posted by Marvin on 12 April 2012 - 04:14 PM

For anyone out there, I just wanted to let you know that I have taken coruage in hand and entered my registry as mentioned in Josh Bond's entry of Apr 08 2012 11:26 PM. I haven't tried modifying my registry since I did it to make my old Windows ME edition computer to clean it up and improve its speed. I am happy to say that it worked with ME and now seem to have worked with Windows 7. Thank you Josh. I believe that I am now pop-up free. I will take full responsibility if it turns out that I messed up the registry. If necessary, I can reload Windows 7 from scratch. I keep backups of everything on an external hard drive and in the cloud. Nevertheless, I would never have had the slightest idea what to do without your post, Josh. Thank you again. :-)

#7978 e-Sword 10.1 Released

Posted by Marvin on 09 April 2012 - 02:54 PM

I don't know how many of us there are but I do not feel that the request that we are making is large. Nor will it hurt anyone else. Furthermore, it should be a simple change to make.

We are simply asking to a reasonable alternative to pop-ups. We are not trying to prevent advertising. As a matter of fact, I believe that all of my purchases from E-Study Source have been the result of their newsletter. Why is there such a large discussion over such a small matter when it would not be at all difficult to rectify it to everyones' satisfaction.

That is unless E-Study Source is insisting that pop-ups be used. If that is the case, I would be very dissapointed in their action. They would be effectively imposing their will on what may be a small or large group of e-Sword users so that they could have more advertising.

Here's an idea. Journey pointed out that we can click on a link and subscribe to the E-Study Source newsletter. How about the option of selecting one or the other. I already subscribe to the newsletter but those who don't and who want to get rid of the pop-ups could subscribe to the newsletter which would offer the option of turning the pop-up off. I personally like the newsletter. I do not like the pop-up. I am leary of messing with my registry.

I really do not like the politically correct term "informational feature." Its a sales method pure and simple. I will guarantee that as I purchase in the future from E-Study Source, and I probably will, it will not be because of the pop-up. As a matter of fact, That probably will influence me to avoid purchacing the item that it is advertising. I do not like pop-ups in this instance.

#7949 e-Sword 10.1 Released

Posted by Marvin on 08 April 2012 - 09:45 PM

Since installation of the new version of Esword, a day or so after it was released, I have had 2 pup ups for estudy resources. Both of these pop ups came within a minute of starting up. It only took one click to clear them.

There are some other angles to look at this.

First, it is extemely limited advertising at best. it isn't an hourly or even a daily occurance. It's quite rare.

Second, these ads make people aware of resources that they might not otherwise know about, which would constitute more of a blessing to them than an annoyance.

The third factor, assuming that there is some financial gain by the author of Esword, it certainly would benefit all of us to allow this feature to exist. On the other hand, it is possible that this is a service that does not benefit the author at all.

I expect that there may be enhancements to the software in how this all works. It is a new addition and as we have seen over the years, Esword continues to be improved and enhanced in so many ways.

As far as limited pop-ups go, I agree with Yoda's philosophy from Star Wars, "There is only 'Do' or 'Do not'." Pop-ups at any time are "Do." I don't care how infrequently they are used, they always seem to pop-up at a most inconvenient time. I assume that this is a function of Murphy's Law.

As far as the informational factor, I have previously mentioned that I do not mind a newsletter. It does not interfere with my enjoyment and usage of e-Sword. I will gladly continue getting my information that way.

I understand that there may be some financial gain but I was under the assumption that Rick was trying to use the philosophy:"Freely you received, freely give." (Matthew 10:8)." If Rick or his ministry are having any financial problem, I am sure that many of us (myself included) will be happy to do what we can to help. Communication is the key to this, not a pop-up.

I appreciat e-Sword and plan to continue to do so for years to come. I will hate the inconvenience of having to block out my copy of e-Sword to internet access just because of a pop-up. I would regret losing the easy downloading from the e-Sword site. Nevertheless, if we cannot come to a compromise solution, I expect that I will have to take that road also.

Please Rick, allow us some viable alternative to the pop-ups.

#7910 e-Sword 10.1 Released

Posted by Marvin on 06 April 2012 - 08:32 PM

I received another pop-up today. It was advertising the Pictorial Dictionary. I just bought that book last week. It seems to me that the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing.

I like the newsletter. I do not like pop-ups, especially while I am studying. If Rick could incorporate a switch with a code to turn off all pop-ups, I would gladly contribute another $20 to e-Sword to get the code to turn it off. The pop-ups are doing nothing but getting me irritated. They are certainly not encouraging me to buy anything. To me it is similar to putting a salesman at the pulpit of my church to get the congregation to buy something before contuing with the sermon.

#4106 .topx folders

Posted by Marvin on 27 November 2011 - 11:35 PM

Thank you, Humble Servant. I went away from that .topx folder in e-Sword. Then I closed e-Sword. (I had closed e-Sword before unsuccessfully because I had not closed all topics in the Template.topx folder.) This time, when I deleted the Template.topx folder in My Documents/e-Sword, it worked. I have now opened e-Sword with no error messages and I have no indication of any other folder in the Topics editor than Topic.topx.

Thank You very much.

#2426 Purchased bblx didn't save install code

Posted by Marvin on 04 October 2011 - 07:48 PM

Go to your e-Sword version 9.9 and click on the downloads tab. Then click Bible. Scroll down until you come to the list of Premium Bibles. Click on  New Living Translation and you will be taken to the eStudy Source web site. That is where you bought your Bible. Click on "help" at the very top or bottom of the web page. you will get a bunch of faq's. Select the query, "What if I need to re-download a purchased product"? The instructions and explanations there should answer all of your questions.
