I have a number of premium e-Sword modules that I no longer use, but I still have the product keys for them. So my questions are A ) is it legal to sell those keys, assuming I delete the modules from my own computer? And B ) would I be allowed to list the modules I have for sale here on the BibleSupport forums?

Thanks!

Hi Chuck,

Now, you really asked a very interesting question, and one which deserves a good answer, of which I hope I can provide.

Personally, I don't think that an electronic book differs from a hard copy of the same book when it comes to buying an selling it. I've know people to sell off their copies of hard copy of books in garage sales, car boot sales, at auctions, and etc. So with that in mind, I don't see anything different about it when it comes to wanting to sell electronic editions.

Having said that, however I think the best person you can ask for a more qualified answer, would be Rick Meyers. And I don't think that he would mind at all.

Chuck - I don't think so. Here's the "terms of use" from eStudySource (the premium outlet for eSword's premium resources) - http://estudysource....page/terms.aspx

Scroll down to the "ACCEPTABLE USE OF THE SITE/PURCHASED CONTENT" section and you'll find this:

You may not reproduce, modify, display, sell, or distribute the software or Content, or use it in any other way for public or commercial purpose.

and in the same paragraph:

You may not share your purchased content, or unlocking keys, or your personal account access with any other party.

Unfortunately, when we buy the premium modules, we also agree to the terms of use. While I'm not a lawyer, I don't think selling your premium modules is going to work.

Ah, so, It looks like that electronic copies of a book/resource is not treated in the same way as a hard copy of that book.

I know there is nothing to stop a person selling of hard copies of book, such as to a second hand book dealer, Trade Me (that's what we have here in NZ), and etc, or have it auctioned off. Well, certainly not a problem here in New Zealand anyway. So, when it comes to the electronic copies of books/resources over here, I'm not too sure how that would work out. Maybe some other Kiwi on this site might know. However, in the mean time I think I might just treat it as a can't/not allowed to do it thingy.

I see that it has to do with licensing of the software. A person never owns the program software, as they would a physical item and which once sold is definitely in the hands of another person. Notice this from Bibleworks. extract below.

So it would be a case of contacting the software publisher where there is some sort of registration email and password, binding to the current user to transfer that data. I expect it is different for each licencee. It is best to ask them, in this case eStudySource.

How Do I Sell or Give My Program or Add-on Modules To Someone Else?
Author: KB Admin Reference Number: AA-02734 Views: 2489 Created: 2012-08-05 19:00 Last Updated: 2014-02-18 11:05 0 Rating/ Voters ico-rating-g.gifico-rating-g.gifico-rating-g.gifico-rating-g.gifico-rating-g.gif
Occasionally some have found that, after acquiring BibleWorks or an add-on module, it did not turn out to be as needed as was originally thought. Rather than let it sit unused on the computer, some have inquired whether the program or module could be sold to another who could make use of the resource.

This is certainly an acceptable practice, and can be conducted as one would if selling or giving the BibleWorks program itself to another person. Of course, if the seller continues to use the BibleWorks program, he or she is honor-bound to remove the resource from the computer to which it had originally been installed.

Transfer of a license for BibleWorks or an add-on module is accomplished by the seller's contacting BibleWorks Customer Support with his/her BibleWorks serial number/activation code and the name and address of the new owner (including the new owner's e-mail address, if available) so that BibleWorks can update its ownership database.

After that, the seller must uninstall the program or module.  The program may be uninstalled through the Windows Control Panel (see instructions in a related FAQ, below).  There are two places where files are stored for the modules. All files for any given module will have the same filename. Only the file extension will differ.

The main files will be found in the DATABASES folder under BibleWorks x. There will also be a filename.reg file that contains the unlock information. Both sets of files should be removed from the computer. If assistance is desired identifying which files apply to which add-on module, simply send the inquiry to BibleWorks Customer Support.

The buyer should then register his/her newly-acquired copy of BibleWorks using the instructions in the FAQ below.

Hi Jon,

I quite agree with what you said. Also I like what you put up regarding BibleWorks' policy on this issue. I think if eStudySource has something like this on their website, then it would really make things a whole heap clearer one way or another.
