How do they justify those prices? It's almost Pharisaical.

Who at any time serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard, and does not eat the fruit of it? Or who tends a flock and does not use the milk of the flock? I am not speaking these things according to human judgment, am I? Or does not the Law also say these things? For it is written in the Law of Moses, "YOU SHALL NOT MUZZLE THE OX WHILE HE IS THRESHING." God is not concerned about oxen, is He?
(1 Corinthians 9:7-9 NAS77)

For the Scripture says, "YOU SHALL NOT MUZZLE THE OX WHILE HE IS THRESHING," and "The laborer is worthy of his wages."
(1 Timothy 5:18 NAS77)

Who are you to judge the servant of another? To his own master he stands or falls; and stand he will, for the Lord is able to make him stand.
(Romans 14:4 NAS77)

Do not speak against one another, brethren. He who speaks against a brother, or judges his brother, speaks against the law, and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law, but a judge of it
. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy; but who are you who judge your neighbor?
(James 4:11-12 NAS77)

Since they did the work of the translation, they are free to set the price for the fruits of their labor.  Considering the hours of effort it might not be too high, and the price most likely will come down as time passes.  Personally I tend to agree for an e-copy that is a bit high.  Of course if they set the price of the e-version too low, it would cut deeply into the sales for the dead tree version.

Thus says the LORD, "Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, (Jeremiah 9:23-24a)

"Defenders of the faith are inclined to be bitter until they learn to walk in the light of the Lord. When you have learned to walk in the light of the Lord, bitterness and contention are impossible." --Oswald Chambers, in Biblical Psychology from The Quotable Oswald Chambers.

My opinion is $35 if very fair for a 5 volume set. If this website sold resources, I would not be embarrassed to charge that. In fact, my initial thought at seeing that website was I wondered if the sales were legitimate and authorized by the copyright holder. I would have expected a higher price.

if you think $35 is high, go look at Logos! :)

The version that Logos is offering is The New Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible published in 2009.  At $139.95 in Logos, that is a steal, given the five volume hardback set costs that much or more, new and paying for tax and shipping. To have it integrated in a software package such as Logos is well worth that purchase price, IMO.

I think the pdf format in this thread is the earlier version, The Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible.

We are very fortunate to have e-Sword premium modules at such reasonable prices. They definitely aren't trying to get rich from e-Sword users.

Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

I paid £45 for the hardback 5 volume set of ISBE not so long ago, and that included postage. In my opinion, paying  about £30 for a PDF is not a good deal at all.

John 2:13-17  Because they had to travel great distances to visit the temple in Jerusalem and offer their sacrifices, it was often necessary to buy animals in Jerusalem. If it happened that they did bring an animal of their own, often an unscrupulous priest responsible for inspecting them would reject the one they brought forcing the visiting unfortunate Jew to buy from the  "services" provided at the temple, usually at extortionate prices. (During the time of the passover the money changers moved their operation into the temple area itself.)

In my opinion $35 is exorbitant for electronic format medium. Its more like profiteering.

Amazon sells the "New" version in hardback set for $333. The older version (without "New" in the name) sells for $165 and up. Logos sells the new version as pre-buy for $139 (and they note the printed version is $400).

No matter how I slice it, the $35 version seems good. Especially when you consider e-Sword charges $25 for the Wuest material, a fraction of the size of the 5 volume dictionary. I try to balance the price of theological material with the man hours it took to write it. None of the resources above were written in a week or month or year. :)

And every e-version they sell eats (to some extent) into the "dead tree" version, which is most likely where they make the most  profit.
