Hello! I use Windows Vista. After downloading new versions of E-S I always get 2 error messages launching the program. First, there is a box with error "0". Nothing more. Then another error message "Error opening Topic Notes database". What is wrong here? This problem seems to be permanent. Can you help?

I would advise doing a fresh install. Delete existing folder on hard drive and repeat the install.

Not sure but the following forum (link) at the old e-sword users site might be helpful.

Someone had the same problem on our old message boards.

PROBLEM:

Recently installed and everything was working fine, but downloaded darby synopsis, and created a bible reading schedule using the bible reading tool.

Now whenever I start the app I get this:

message box appears containing a zero. I click OK
then another message box containing zero. I click OK
splash screen appears.
then another message box containing zero. I click OK.
then a message box "Error opening topic notes database" click ok.
then app starts.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled numerous times using add/remove programs, and deleted the leftover files in program files. But now I keep getting this same error. I guess something is left over in registry? It did work once.

SOLUTION:

I downloaded and ran RevoUninstaller. It has several options, and I chose the "safe" option first, and that worked. It uninstalled, and I re-installed, and the problem is now gone.

Maybe try the free version of RevoUninstaller: http://www.revounins...e_download.html

Hi Mattin

I have seen that problem in other occasions. Before uninstalling or following the other suggestions, try this, please.

Go to My Documents\e-Sword, and find the file topic.notx.

- If you have topic notes and want to keep them, rename the file with a different name.
- If you don't have any topics notes to keep, just delete the file.

Now start e-Sword and see if the same error happens.

If it is fixed, perfect!. If not, try the other suggestions.

Regards,

Carlos

Hello! Just to let you know that I've followed all suggestions on this thread, but to no avail. Always the same problem occurs. The installation file must be faulty. What a pity.

First, there is a box with error "0". Nothing more.

All,
This usually occurs as a result of upgrade (update) installations. My preference, which I've never had an issue with is always uninstall the previous version of e-Sword, reboot the computer, then do a clean install, and reboot the computer.

After that, I then clean the Registry using CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) to clean all old references to e-Sword. Then reboot the computer.

I realize that this is a pain in the butt, but because of the way that Windows is, irrespective of the version, I have learned that one has to go to some crazy lengths to have some form of stability.

Then another error message "Error opening Topic Notes database". What is wrong here? This problem seems to be permanent. Can you help?

This is an issue of where a database file gets corrupted, and its usually the ones that e-Sword creates by default. Usually the default database files that gets corrupted are:
  • topic.topx
  • note.notx
and perhaps one or two more.

This kind of problem is nothing major to fix.
  • Exit e-Sword
  • Open Windows Exploder (oops, I mean Window Explorer) File Manager
  • Go to either or both My Documents\e-Sword and/or C:\Program Files\e-Sword (C:\Program Files(x86)\e-Sword if using Win7) folder(s) and delete all default folders files created by e-Sword.
  • Exit Windows Explorer File Manager.
  • Restart e-Sword.
Another important bit of information:
  • Never use e-Sword's default files for creating any e-Sword files.
  • Always when wishing to create a study note, topic note, Journal file, give it it's own unique file name
To create a new topic, study or journal note file:
  • Click on New in the File menu
  • This opens the Save Dialog, and then enter in the file name of the file you wish to create
  • Click on the Save button to save the file.
I realize this has been late in the coming, but I thought this topic was worth going into even at this late stage.

For more information about creating study note, topic note and other e-Sword files, please refer to the wonderful e-Sword Users Manual. Its fantastic!

Blessings,
Stephen (Php 1:21).

I was just thinking that you might have a user permission conflict of some sort. I also have no idea how many users you have configured and what level of access each is given. Clean everything up again and do a clean install as the ADMIN. Before you open e-Sword, go to the exe for e-Sword, click properties, and give the user name you use the most full access. Now, open e-Sword with the user name you use the most and see what happens. I hope this helps some. If it's a permission problem, this just might solve it.

Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

<snip>
...always uninstall the previous version of e-Sword...After that, I then clean the Registry

As Josh stated in post #4 RevoUninstaller Free works perfect and will perform both tasks. It will remove the program and then the program residue found in the registry. "Safe" is good if you're new to this kind of tool, "Moderate" if you're familiar with the process. I like to click the "+" after a registry scan to see exactly what is being removed from the registry! When done reboot the system.

Also mentioned, CCleaner is another great program to have and use regularly to clean a system. CCleaner Slim or Portable will not install toolbars, the Standard version has been known to do this.

Btw, what journey says is important, many exe files are blocked from running properly or at all when run on newer OSes. User permissions or admin rights may not be properly set. DEP has been known to create problems. If you have security software running, AV, firewall, these too can cause problems when running an exe file.

Make sure you have admin rights, give the exe full permission, and make sure security software is not blocking the file.

e-Sword 9x is a major upgrade, a good habit is to install fresh when the program upgrade is major. A minor upgrade would be 8.0.2 to 8.0.5. The downside is you may need to get new addon resources as well, 7x and 8x resources wont work on 9x, even a conversion may be buggy.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

Thanks for your input. You've added some vital information that I didn't know about. I'm an XP user, and when its time to get a new Computer, I may still keep using XP. That said, I do notice there are some huge differences in permissions in Win Vista and 7.

So, again, thanks for your input to this topic.

Blessings,
Stephen (Php 1:21).
