What e-Sword Utilities Do You Need?

What types of e-Sword utilities would you like to see? The sky is the limit for asking, but no guarantees for implementation.

I can't think of anything else e-Sword users need, but maybe you can? Raymond has made several utilities (and is about to release another one) and I thought while we have Ray's interest, why not see if there's anything else that needs programming?

Right, the original Resourcer let the user define collections of modules and launch e-Sword only with those modules. It was also good for exporting a list of modules as an excel spreadsheet. I never used it much but a lot of people liked it. I know its now unsupported and the author told me he cannot develop it further.

I find e-Sword Resourcer most useful. I have organized my Bibles via the Resourcer into the following "workspaces":

All e-Sword Modules
Basic Study
Standard Study
Original Language Study
Formal Equivalence
Dynamic Equivalence
Early English Translations
Pre-1940 Translations
Post-1940 Translations

Obviously, there is a lot of overlap between these groupings. The majority will have the KJV, just for comparison sake. Often, I pair the NASB with it for much the same reason. I have added dictionaries and commentaries to the individual workspaces as I have found them helpful. Sadly, there has never been support for topics nor (obviously) the new reference works. It would be nice, to have the ability to categorize them as well, since they now form the vast bulk of e-Sword modules

In another direction. I love the e-Sword Library Manager. What I would like to see is a way to distinguish between groups once I have all of a certain category organized. For example, I used Library Manager to group my Dictionaries as follows. My regular Bible dictionaries are first followed by Topical Bibles followed by Concordances, etc. All of these are in the Dictionary section. How about a dummy tab to separate each of these sub-categories or perhaps the capability to select a light pastel color for each group of tabs to distinguish each sub-category.

When I load e-Sword, I rarely know that I am going to use only certain groups of books so I do want to load them all at once. Nevertheless it would be nice to be able to distinguisg what and where the sub-category groupings are.

I have one that someone made (a real stand-alone program that opens and converts and generates an e-Sword module). But someone will not let me distribute it, apparently because some in theWord community will be offended. My rebuttal to that was: "but, it's ok for there to be an e-Sword to theWord converter?"

There's three issues with the converter:

1)The commentary and dictionary files are converted with an RTF header. That means once in e-Sword format, the module will not use e-Sword's default font selection, default font size, Greek font selection, Hebrew font selection, etc. All this means: people are going to complain about the way Greek displays on Windows XP and about how they cannot re-size the fonts (two common complains about resources we have that have an RTF header).

2) Topics convert well, except they are out of order when displayed in e-Sword. e-Sword alphabetizes topics, where as theWord (and most other Bible software) uses data in the database to sort the topic titles. So, you have to manually insert numbers into e-Sword topic titles for correct display. I think I've mentioned before my displeasure with the way e-Sword sorts Book files.

3) You must manually perform a regular expression search/replace to remove the tw:// RTF links. e-Sword does not use the RTF linking system. Instead, e-Sword uses a pattern matching system (Gen_3:1 -- 3 letter book name abbreviation, underscore, chapter:verse). So in short, all RTF links must be removed with a search/replace and it's probably easiest to then run the module through ToolTip NT to tooltip the verses. You have to be really careful when doing this. If theWord says verse 5 and verse 5 is a clickable link that takes you to Genesis 1:5, then if you remove the link, you're left with just "verse 5", which will not tooltip.

notice that word "direct"? I was hoping to see something that was just a couple of clicks (like the official "eS to TW" converter offered by Costas), and not something that needed to be washed through more than one piece of software to achieve the desired results.

"Direct." Key word.

If it can happen, great. We get to serve a wider audience with a few more modules. If not, we'll - somehow - survive.
