#19270 What are your recommended e-Sword dictionaries?

Posted by turnsouth on 04 November 2013 - 02:15 PM

I've been using e-Sword LT more often on my iPod, and have found that with more than a few dictionaries installed, the switching of dictionaries slows way down (apparently due to LT pre-looking up the desired word in every dictionary in order to display whether or not each particular dictionary has a definition for the word)

So I've decided to reduce the number of dictionaries that I have installed, and was wondering which ones are most recommended by everyone (including those available from both e-Sword and BibleSupport)?

Thanks

#18573 Older versions of e-Sword

Posted by turnsouth on 11 September 2013 - 07:02 AM

If you're worried about the latest version calling home to see what's new and available for e-Sword, put a block in your firewall for http://www.e-sword.net

It doesn't bother me, don't know if I could make it through a day without internet access. Just thinking of friends in other countries that want to be able to give away Bible software easily and quietly without any special warnings, or hoops to jump through.

A nice feature would be a small courtesy warning like "e-Sword would like to connect to the internet and check for updated versions. Is this OK?"

I wonder how many people have been snagged, (in countries where all internet traffic is monitored), by Bible software that connects to the internet unknowingly? Likely not a documented statistic...

#17285 MySword for android

He charges money for this program that leverages public domain material...

Technically, any leveraging is done solely for added features to the software.

If I'm not mistaken, all available public domain material is quite usable in the free version of MySword.

And, like others have mentioned, the time and effort that has gone into the deluxe version is more than worth the price. Some of the finest Android software available.

#16349 a very interesting site

To dismiss the wonderful bounty that 2000 years of wisdom and insight that others have gleaned from the Word of God is indeed a very sad thing.

Multi sub-levels for the table of contents in topics would be nice.

#14143 Would creation of a BibleSupport update tool be feasible?

Posted by turnsouth on 17 November 2012 - 02:41 PM

I'm talking about a resource update checker. Something that would compare the creation date of the resources on a user's computer with the most current dates of the matching resources on BibleSupport.

Sort of the way the internal e-Sword downloader does, but obviously on a much larger scale.

#14142 Strongs vs Mickelson

The anti-King James statements and the for a "future generation" talk ended my interest a year or two ago when I discussed it with him, honestly.

When I read his diatribe the first thought that flashed into my head was "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector..."

Funny that.

Here is the 2004 version with permission to use as long as it is not for commercial purposes:

#13940 e-Sword Life, an opinion

Posted by turnsouth on 09 November 2012 - 09:20 AM

I'm at work right now, and I can count 7 PC's that will never be replaced by tablets. At home there are 4 that will never be replaced by tablets.

That being said, there will come a day in the not too distant future where tablets will be fully Windows/Mac/Linux capable, which will solve the issue of having a PC app versus a mobile one. At that time all apps will converge into fully capable ones, basically desktop apps on a portable device. So there will be no end in the future of e-Sword for the PC.

All that being said, there will always be a need for large screens and real keyboards, and even if all the processes are carried out on a small tablet devices, the peripherals will continue to offer the option of "real PC" feel.

#13934 Is this normal MySword behavior?

Posted by turnsouth on 09 November 2012 - 05:41 AM

When I enter a numbered list in the editor like this:

# List item 1
## First indentation
# List item 2
## First indentation
## Second indentation

I get this:

1. List item 1

1. First indentation

2. List item 2

1. First indentation

2. Second indentation

Is this normal? Does it always use just Arabic numerals?

#13902 Anyway to turn off word lookup?

Posted by turnsouth on 08 November 2012 - 10:14 AM

I've found that the sync setting isn't "sticky", I have to turn it off every time I start e-Sword. Bit of an annoyance...

In the commentary window, I'd like an indicator that would show up on the book and chapter comments buttons if there is a comment in the particular commentary for the viewed passage. Something like the "i" that shows up in a commentary's tab if a commentary has comments on the verse, (but smaller of course.)

#13540 Anyway to turn off word lookup?

Thanks Josh, that worked perfect.

You know, I did a quick scan of the user guide with a couple of searches, but never thought of looking for "Synchronize". Has any thought ever been given to compiling the user guide into a true Windows help file? One that would have an indexed topic search? It would really come in handy for something like this.

#13479 Anyway to turn off word lookup?

Posted by turnsouth on 26 October 2012 - 10:15 AM

Since I have been adding more dictionaries I've found that there is an increasing delay in moving the cursor around in the editor as the dictionaries look up the words.

Is there anyway to turn this off?
