I have on my to do list the Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis for e-Sword. But before I venture down this road to create it as both a topx and an refx module, I would like to like to know if whether these books are still copyright or in the Public Domain.

I tried to find out on the Internet just where these books are at, but with no joy. So if anyone could help in trying to find out, or can give me some direction of where I can get this information from would be really appreciated.

Blessings,

The Chronicles of Narnia were written by C. S. Lewis between 1949 and 1954. They were published between 1950 and 1956. They are still under copyright..

Hi Ebed,
Thanks for that info. Now that I know that, then I'll keep it shelved.

To Josh,
If you and your team of experts can get copyright permission to create these books as e-Sword modules, that would be great. Also, I thinking of CS Lewis' Screw Tape Letters.

APsit,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Like you, I am a fan of C.S. Lewis and have been since I first read Screw Tape Letters back when I was a young teenager. I still have my original copy, published by Time Magazine in 1962. It is cola stained, duct-tape repaired, dog-eared and much read. This was followed by such classics as Joyful Christian and Mere Christianity. I've only recently (the last 10-15 years or so :P) discovered the Chronicles. My grandchildren love them. CSL's legacy will be appreciated for centuries to come. It would be nice to have another vehicle such as e-Sword in which to spread them.

There are topx modules for Mere Christianity and the Weight of Glory unless those are in violation of copyright (and it would break my heart to have to delete them from my collection), it might not be too hard to get permission for Narnia modules.
Thus says the LORD, "Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, (Jeremiah 9:23-24a)

"Defenders of the faith are inclined to be bitter until they learn to walk in the light of the Lord. When you have learned to walk in the light of the Lord, bitterness and contention are impossible." --Oswald Chambers, in Biblical Psychology from The Quotable Oswald Chambers.

Hi Ebed,
Its not a big deal to me, bro. That said, I'm going to create them as topx files for myself so that I can read them on e-Sword. I find the stories of there, although not Biblical, are very allegorical of Biblical truths.

As a matter of interest, CS Lewis was a friend of JRR Tolkien . And talking about JRR Tolkien, the movie, The Hobbit by Peter Jackson is well and truly underway here in New Zealand. I really had to say that. :P :D And after that movie is out, Old Pete Jackson is going to scoop in more Oscars than the last time. And I also really say that as well. :P :D

C. S. Lewis' family has renewed the copyright on all of his works. This means that the copyright expires, in the United States, 95 years after the books' publication dates.

Some have been found available commercially but only if copy protected

[[i.e. locked up tight with royalties paid - most likely not e-sword]]

[[Just reporting what I found on another site]]

Fair use clause means you can make your own copy for e-Sword if you already own a printed or purchased electronic copy.  However, it is for your own personal use.  As cheap as those books are now (the Chronicles of Narnia), one can find a complete set on eBay for around $10.00 or less.  If one frequents yard sales of thrift stores, you might wrangle a whole set for around $5.00.  And no offense to the module makers (like myself), but I'd rather read a physical book than to spend hours staring at a lighted screen reading it.
