Hello everyone,

I'm using E-Sword on MacBook, and everything was working just fine. But suddenly, every time I launch E-Sword, my layout is reset to its default sizes and selections, and I have to reconfigure most of my layout (including the sizes of the windows themselves).

It will also reset the Bible window back to single Bible view - I have it set as Parallel (KJV and Portuguese ACF), but it will reset back to whichever Bible is the default (in this case, KJV).

It will, however, remember my commentary selection. Weird.

I've tried restarting my MacBook, as well as reinstalling the program 2x.

If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated! God bless.

Hello MrZwitz,

You would need to give some more details about how you are configuring your layout and what exactly is resetting (which windows, etc.) in order to give you more help. Some of what is happening to you, perhaps, is normal behaviour.

For instance, as to the Bible window reseting back to single Bible view, that is the normal behaviour of e-Sword X (and I think in the Windows version as well). That is, if you quit e-Sword while still in Parallel view, when you restart it will be in single Bible view. Again, this is normal. It will always start in single Bible view. That is a behaviour of e-Sword that Rick Meyers himself would have to change.

Sorry I couldn't give you more help at this time.

Hello MrZwitz,

I suppose you're right about it defaulting to single Bible view. I guess that is what it is. Wish we could just just choose our own defaults for when the program launches. I'd like for it to launch right were it was when I closed it. But I guess this would just save me 1 click, so it's alright.

The bigger inconvenience is that all my "windows" (Bible, Commentary, Split view - Strong's numbers) are resized back to, what I imagine to be, default. This requires me to resize them every time I launch the application.

I thought I'd just try minimizing the application instead of closing it out...but then, when I click on the application to bring it back, Split view with Strong's numbers disappears, and I have to cmd+w to bring it back.

Just a bunch of small things that add up to a significant annoyance. It's probably a Mac thing though. Love 'em and hate 'em.

I see what you mean by split view disappearing, even when you just minimize the app and don't quit it. I tried it and it did it on me too. I can see that it would be pretty annoying. You may be right that it is a Mac thing.

Probably the only solution (if there is one) would be to complain about it (nicely, of course) to Rick Meyers. Perhaps he might be able and willing to fix this. You can contact him here with problems, questions, suggestions, and praise for the Mac version of e-Sword here:

Update:

After having updated to e-Sword X version 8.0 the other day, I find that split view will now remain after you quit and relaunch e-Sword. However, it will still disappear if you minimize the app. That fixes part of your problem, at least.

I submitted a query to Rick Meyers, asking about saving the arrangement of e-Sword views on the screen. My query related to e-Sword Version 12.2.0 on e-Sword for the PC.

This query is just to confirm that, when rearranging the views on the e-Sword for the PC workspace, the relative position of the movable views as selected by the user, will only be saved for the current session.

Is the same situation applicable for use in the other versions of e-Sword also?

Is there an option to save the view in a file somewhere in the User Files Location folder, and if so, what would that filename be, and how would it be reaccessed for the following e-Sword session?

I expect that you intend that the user could make a screenprint of his e-Sword setup, which he could save in his [Physical] Bible Study note folder, to be able to refer to for the following session of his e-Sword project.

I expect that the view needs to be reselected when e-Sword is run again. This point is not mentioned in the training demonstration in the "Training" tab.

This detail is not mentioned in the e-Sword user_guide.pdf published after the release of e-Sword version 10.4 for the PC in 2014.

Rick Meyers replied: The screen layout should always be saved.  If it is not, then that means the Windows user account does not have the required permissions to write to the Windows Registry where this information is stored.  This is often the case with a "guest" account in Windows.
