#46094 Searching by highlight color

Posted by APsit190 on 23 March 2024 - 02:36 PM in e-Sword Questions & Answers

Is there a way to search for Bible verses that are highlighted with a specific color?

From a programmers perspective, I guess that it can be done, but when it comes to specificity that can be a real problem.

So, here's the problem: You could have many verses of Scripture which have the same color (you can see the road I'm taking), and in your search by color, the result (you guessed it right) of that particular will pop up. So, which verse did you really want?!

Albeit that the search by color is somewhat narrower than a search by a word, you still may not find the exact verse you are looking for. And the difficulty can be even further compounded by a user when he or she just loves to go for the customized colors rather than the 6 main colors in e-Sword. And (by the way) there ain't a name for them.

But, hey, what do I know, I'm just a (retired) programmer.

#46087 All caps Koine Greek

Posted by APsit190 on 22 March 2024 - 12:37 AM in Module Requests

Simply use a Koine Greek font that uses all caps.

Or alternatively, get a Greek font that is totally upper case, and not lower case.

That's what I like to call, "A real hard case." ROFL.gif

#46053 Adding Bookmarks

Posted by APsit190 on 07 March 2024 - 02:10 PM in e-Sword Questions & Answers

Is there a way to bookmark in the commentaries and other resources?

Commentaries and Dictionaries:

In short: No!

For a much longer and comprehensive answer: No!

Topic, Study, and Journal Notes:

Short answer: Yes!

For a much longer and comprehensive answer: Yes

I was thinking about doing a "How to" video on this topic, but Nah. Can't be bothered. There's a pretty decent help resource which comes with e-Sword in pdf format, "e-Sword User Guide." It just might help you.

Over and out!

#46026 Creating Bible Modules with Strong's Numbers

Posted by APsit190 on 29 February 2024 - 10:02 PM in e-Sword Tools & Utilities

I am not having much luck with finding away to create bibles with Strong's Number's.

I have tried a few macros with Open Office Writer but have had no luck, I have also checked out a number of Find and Replace software programs with no luck.

Hopefully I will hit on something

Hi Higgsy,

Remember this tip?

My suggestion is you pick Rick Meyers' brains on resolving this problem.

Now, if he has a "quick" method, I'm certain he will share it with you. It'll save you pulling your hair out (that's if you have any :D) trying to figure it out.

Remember the old adage, "You'll never know unless you give it a go." So, ask him. It won't cost you anything. Fair dinkum, mate.

#46019 Amplified Bible NIV version for mysword

Posted by APsit190 on 28 February 2024 - 01:14 PM in e-Sword Questions & Answers

If you have the e-Sword versions either of those they can be converted for MySword using Simple Bible Reader

Higgsy,

The NIV and Amplified Bibles are locked resources, and cannot be converted using Simple Bible Reader. Moreover, when you give advice like this (as much as I hate saying this), you're, ummm, condoning a criminal activity  . Naughty boy!!!

#45978 Creating Bible Modules with Strong's Numbers

Posted by APsit190 on 21 February 2024 - 01:48 PM in e-Sword Tools & Utilities

StrFind = "beginning, God, created, heavan, earth"
StrRepl = "beginningH7225, GodH430, createdH1254, heavenH8064, earthH778"

Hi Higgsy,

Having looked at your code, the problem I see with it, is that it replaces all the words with just those Strong numbers only. So, for example take the word "Earth." Going by what I can see, there are two Strong numbers for that word: H776 and H127. So, reading your syntax, where the word Earth is suppose to have H127; that will have H776. That then becomes a major problem because you have a incorrect rendering of that word, Earth, in that instance or those instances. You have to resolve this problem. You can't just ignore it. See examples below:

And now art thou cursedH779 [H8803] from the earthH127 (Gen 4:11)

TheseH428 are the generationsH8435 of the heavensH8064 and of the earthH776 (Gen 2:4).

My suggestion is you pick Rick Meyers' brains on resolving this problem. And bearing this in mind, I'd be interested to see what your thoughts are on this issue.

#45948 Any way to change text and highlighting colors that appear upon selecting a t...

Posted by APsit190 on 18 February 2024 - 06:13 PM in e-Sword Questions & Answers

It is not an O/S problem.  The developer just does not want to do it.

And that is where it actually lies whether one likes it or not. If one doesn't like it, too bad!

That said, remember that the developer/programmer/author of the program is in total control, and has the right to make it according to his taste and liking. And also to what he thinks works best. But more importantly, the developer has to make the program efficient to be able to work in its environment effectively without using or gobbling up the computers resources to where it will cause a crash.

However, from what I'm seeing, its the highlighted color when Selecting text as a result of dragging the cursor over it. That is caused by the Text Control, and not on the programmer's choice, and that cannot be changed—At all. Period! Totally outside of the developer's purview.

Maybe I should do a video about this, and plonk it up here. (Tomorrow or whenever).

#45947 Creating Bible Modules with Strong's Numbers

Posted by APsit190 on 18 February 2024 - 04:54 PM in e-Sword Tools & Utilities

Of all the tools available for the creation of e-Sword modules, there is one aspect that is lacking and that is the ability to create bible modules with Strong's Numbers.

e-Sword Tooltip NT does not have the function to add Strong's Number's with relative ease while it does provide the functionality to properly format Strong's Numbers. This particular function when used formats Strong's Numbers so that when an e-Sword user mouse over the number the Strong's number in a bible module, the Strong's information appears in a Pop-Up.

Formatting the Strong's Numbers is very important but first the numbers have to be added to the bible text which there is no simple easy to do, The only option in Tooltip is to use find and replace for each Strong's number. This means doing a find and replace such as replacing the word God with GodH430. using the find and replace option in tooltip looks like this:

Find What:
God

Replace With:
GodH430

The tooltip user would then click Replace All to had the Strong's Number to all instances of God.

There 8674 Strong's Number for Hebrew words and 5624 Strong's Numbers for Greek words in order to add all of the Strong's number to a bible text will require using the Find and Replace method 14298 times.

Cleary an easier and more efficient method can be created to accomplish this task thus allowing more bible translations to be available with Strong's Numbers.

The question is how to create away to accomplish this that will automate the task require just a few simple mouse clicks one thought I had was a macro to accomplish this task but I have looked at some Find and Replace macros that can be downloaded and I am not sure a macro will work.

I think more ideally some sort of Find and Replace tool that can do the following would be the best route:

Open the e-Sword module in RTF format then automatically go through the e-Sword module and do all the finding and replacing so that the module is populated with the Strong's Numbers.

The user would then save the RTF fille with new name so as not to overwrite the original file.

After this is complete the user will then open the new RTF file in Tooltip to properly format the Strong's Numbers for e-Sword use. Followed by generating the e-Sword module using Tooltip.

I have searched the web for such a find replace tool and come up empty, I think we have enough computer savvy people here could come together and make this happen.

Anyone interested?

Hi Higgsy,

I don't know if what I am about to share will be of any help or not, I have no idea, but at least I'll give it a go.

When it comes to the actual numbers, remember you will need to prefix them with a G and an H. For example, the number 123 without the prefix G or H is about as useful as a hip-pocket on a t-shirt because there is a 123 for Greek, as well as there is for Hebrew, and they don't refer to the same word:

  • The Strong's number 123 for the Greek is: αἰγιαλός
aigialós; gen. aigialoú, from aḯssō (n.f.), to rush, and háls (n.f., see below), sea. The coast of a sea, lake, or bay (Mat_13:2, Mat_13:48; Joh_21:4; Act_21:5; Act_27:39-40; Sept.: Jdg_5:17).
Deriv. of háls (n.f.), sea: halieús (G231), a fisherman; enálios (G1724), belonging in the sea, marine; thálassa (G2281), sea.
  • The Strong's number 123 for the Hebrew is: ֱאדוֹם  ’eḏōm: A proper noun designating Edom

Now, I realize I may be stating the obvious, but I thought that it might be worthwhile mentioning.

Dealing with this question:

The question is how to create away to accomplish this that will automate the task require just a few simple mouse clicks one thought I had was a macro to accomplish this task but I have looked at some Find and Replace macros that can be downloaded and I am not sure a macro will work.

I don't think that a "Find & Replace" in a word processor will work. But it may work in SQLite using a script. However, the problem you will come across is when a word has multiple translations/renderings, meanings and grammar, such as when a word is a noun, a verb, etc. which requires a different Strong's Number. And there, my friend is where the real difficulties arises, and I don't think a find and replace will work in any situation.

That said, If you happen to own a hard/physical copy of Strong's Exhaustive Concordance (as I have one), then you will have an actual reference point you can work with when dealing with those differences of translations and etc. If you don't then you may just have to beg, steal, borrow, or go and buy one :D.

Now, the physical copy of the Strong's Exhaustive Concordance comes in two (or I think four) flavors:

  1. King James Version (a given, and have it)
  2. New International Version (Seen it at a Christian bookstore)
  3. Possibly Revised Standard Version
  4. Possibly New American Standard Version.

Numbers 3 and 4 are more of a guess at best. So, it might pay to check them out.

Now, I really hope and trust the information I've given you actually works out well for you.

#45941 Text Editor: text-format cloning ("paint brush" tool), or Paragraph...

Posted by APsit190 on 17 February 2024 - 05:18 PM in e-Sword Questions & Answers

thanks everyone, I got it working!

Even though it was font file, when I skipped it, it still wouldn't work, so probably something else going on besides the font file.

I ended up having to delete the existing folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\e-Sword ToolTip Tool NT) as the previous uninstalls left some files, at least from what I can tell.

Then I installed TX 27 version (20191007.exe).

All good now.   Thanks for all your help.

Glad that you got it going, and that it's all working for you.

#45906 Greeting from Columbia, South Carolina.

Posted by APsit190 on 13 February 2024 - 11:11 PM in Just Saying Hi

Hi y'all,

I live in West Columbia, SC.  I've been using e-Sword for years and I've stumbled upon this site for additional bibles and commentaries.

Today I realized there is a message board, so I wanted to say hi.

Best regards,

David

Hey! Im not far away from you... Over in Saint George

Hi to you both.

As for me, I'm very far away from both of you dudes. Way over the other end of the Pacific Ocean where time begins.

Blessings,

#45892 Text Editor: text-format cloning ("paint brush" tool), or Paragraph...

Posted by APsit190 on 10 February 2024 - 08:26 PM in e-Sword Questions & Answers

Hello,

I use the Editor quite a bit.  Is there any way to get functionality similar to the Microsoft programs that copy text format style with the "paint brush" tool?

Another option that would help me a lot is to have a Paragraph Styles (similar to Microsoft products) drop-down that you can select from a populated list of formatting styles (ex. Heading = Arial 14 pt Bold, indented  /  Body = Arial 12 pt / Bible verse = Verdana 12 pt, 2" left margin / etc.).

E-Sword is a great tool, and this is one of my only complaints with it.  I find the existing very time consuming and clunky when I am creating a lesson, as I teach from the Editor and I like it look nice (formatted).

If there's no way to do this within the program, or something similar, I'll post separately as a request for future update.

thanks!

A tool called, "ToolTip Tool NT" (affectionately known as, T4) will do the kind of formatting you are looking for, particularly the "paint brush" thingy. This program is actually designed for the creation of e-Sword resources. And is essentially the "Swiss Pocket Knife" for e-Sword. Click here to download this program.

Stephen (Php 1:21).

#45883 Arabic bibles and viewing the text right to left

Posted by APsit190 on 08 February 2024 - 04:35 PM in e-Sword Questions & Answers

Olaf,

I can't be bothered answering your irrelevant questions which have nothing to do with the topic.

If you want the kind of information then I suggest you take the time to learn how to use a DBMS such as SQLite.

I've uploaded documentation about how e-Sword reads Database files, which covers some of the question you ask

#45869 Arabic bibles and viewing the text right to left

Posted by APsit190 on 06 February 2024 - 04:39 PM in e-Sword Questions & Answers

Hello everyone.
Using Simple Bible Reader, I converted an Arabic dialect bible into e-Sword format. It imports correctly, but it displays the bible text in an incorrect manner. The problem that I see is that e-Sword is treating it as a left-to-right language but it should be displayed right-to-left. The Arabic SVD bible I downloaded from the built in repository works correctly, so I am wondering how I can modify the bible file I created to tell e-Sword to display it right-to-left. I looked through every part of options/settings and don't see a way to do it from the application itself.
Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?

See video below for the fix.

Trust you find this video helpful.

Notice that this is Take #2 of the original video, which I have taken down and deleted. I've also taken the care to explain and show what the cause was for the lack audio in the 1st video.

#45850 Reference libuary

Posted by APsit190 on 27 January 2024 - 11:14 PM in Tutorials

There is a way to organize Reference Library (aka Reference Books) refx files!  Use Tab Renamer to modify the "Module Title" field. Refx files downloaded from e-Sword are listed per Module Title rather than filename.

If the refx file was created via the Topic Editor conversion capability it lacks the "details" table that e-Sword downloaded refx books have. The request below was posted yesterday looking for help with this challenge.  No responses yet.

The Tab Renamer works only for renaming Bible, Commentary, and Dictionary/Lexicon, and Map tab names. Both Topic Notes and Reference Book files are loaded into their respective Dropdown Combo Boxes which only displays their filenames when e-Sword starts up, and therefore there is no possible way to edit them in Tab Renamer.

Blessings,

Stephen (Php 1:21)
