Hello everyone! I am an orthodox, devout, traditional Roman Catholic and yes, I use E-Sword for many of my apologetics endeavors and also for simply studying the Bible and such. And since I am a Catholic, I am primarily interested in the Catholic modules available for E-Sword. Unfortunately there is nowhere near as many Catholic modules for E-Sword as there is Protestant modules and other non-Catholic modules. I, personally, would like to see this change and at least see the number of Catholic modules be roughly the same number or at least somewhere close to the same number as Protestant and other non-Catholic modules. I don't see that happening at any time in the near future but that's okay. The main reason why I am here on BibleSupport.com is in order to find more Catholic modules for my E-Sword program. I am interested in everyting from Bible modules to Dictionary modules to Commentary modules to Topic modules. So yes, basically I am interested in all modules for E-Sword that are intended for use by Catholics. :)

Anyway, a little about me. As I said, I am an orthodox, devout, and traditional Roman Catholic. I am a 29 year old lady from Southwestern Indiana. I live within the Diocese of Evansville, Indiana. I attend a Mass in the Ordinary Form (regular English Mass) but would love to someday attend a Mass in the Extraordinary Form (Latin Mass). I converted to Catholicism in 2006. I officially became a Catholic on Easter Vigil (Saturday night before Easter Sunday) of 2006. I was raised a Southern Baptist but the Southern Baptist doctrines never made any sense to me and frankly, did not seem to be Biblical at all. I then went on a search through various Protestant religions and even some non-Christian religions such as Islam. Again, none of them made any sense to me and did not seem Biblical or very close to the Truth. Finally, a friend from an online forum introduced me to the Catholic Church. He told me how the Catholic Church has a line of Popes going clear back to Saint Peter, the apostle of Jesus Christ. Well, this really interested me a lot and it was pretty much at that moment that I knew I would eventually become Catholic. I did do some more study on the Catholic Church and learned more and more about their beliefs and doctrines. The more I learned, the more I loved it. And now, I am fully convinced that the Catholic Church is the Church and only religion that God Himself founded here on earth and that it is the only religion and Church that He fully approves of and protects from doctrinal error with His Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Most Holy Trinity who is God just the same as the Father, first Person of the Most Holy Trinity, and Jesus Christ, the second Person of the Most Holy Trinity.

That said, I have a cat named Precious. She is a 7 year old female and she is very loving and very sweet. I have had her ever since I took her in from my Grandma's house who was keeping her outside. That was when she was just a young kitten. I have had her ever since and owning her and taking care of this beautiful creature of God's has been a delight to me!

Some of the other interests that I have include: movies based upon the Bible, fictional movies with a Biblical theme, historical movies based on true events in history, historical movies that are fictional, non-fiction books, very few fiction books, spiritual books, health, alternative health, mental health, physical health, research and treatments on chronic pain, research and treatments on Fibromyalgia, research and treatments on Borderline Personality Disorder, star gazing, astronomy in general, evangelizing, playing computer games, playing Nintendo games, playing Super Nintendo games, playing Nintendo 64 games, writing, journaling, comparative religion, and many other things.

That said, I am disabled. I have Fibromyalgia, Borderline Personality Disorder, Major Depression, and quite a few other health conditions. Also, Borderline Personality Disorder is not the same thing as multiple personality disorder which is now known as Dissociative Identity Disorder. I am on SSI and have not worked since 2004 or 2005. I am also on Medicaid and Food stamps. I am very thankful to God for my SSI, Medicaid, and Food stamps. I know that some Christians are opposed to welfare but I am not. I believe that welfare is a good thing for those of us who truly need it.

Finally, I do tend to make very long winded posts like this one. This one isn't as long winded as some of the posts I have been known to make in other online forums and message boards though. I have been known to make some posts that are several pages long. :P I have also been known to make very short posts sometimes consisting of only one sentence and sometimes consisting of only one or two paragraphs. But anyway, I hope to meet some nice people on here and I look forward to posting with you all!

I am primarily interested in the Catholic modules available for E-Sword.

Once upon a time, a couple of hundred resources of e-Sword that were Catholic in orientation were publicly available. My guess is that most of them were pulled due to copyright issues.

Extraordinary Form (Latin Mass).

Given a choice, I'd take the Traditional Tridentine Mass in Latin over either Ordo Nova, or anything in the vernacular.

Suggestion: Make a list of the Catholic resources that you find. Those that are on this site can be tagged as such.

Hello Holly and all devout Catholics!

I’ve prayed for YOU and I come to you today and ask,

How can I be saved?

I want to go to heaven and not to hell!

What should I do?

'What would you tell me?

I have asked this question, and ask it of you.

Are you sure of your own salvation?

Please, enjoy E-Sword!

This E-Sword is very good for everyone. Because if you really want to know the real answers you should know the answer God gives in The Bible.

But now you maybe think that the right answers for the questions above are: Be good. Don't sin. Live by God's law. SO, you think that you can merit your own salvation.

BUT The Holy Bible teaches us the exact opposite of that which most of us have believed!

You can NOT merit salvation!

THE BIBLE, God’s Book for God’s people!!!, teaches us that we are sinners who do not merit salvation.
All men have sinned Not one of them acts uprightly, no, not one (Romans 3:23, 12). We are all included!

The Bible teaches that we are not good enough to save our souls. Cursed is he who does not abide by everything written in the book of the law to carry it out (Galatians 3:10).

God asks us to abide by everything, not simply to be better than others, but abide by everything! Some of us abide by more than others, but no one is perfect.

Even though none of us abides by everything written in the book of the law, God still loves us, and in His love, He gives us the good news of the Gospel. That is, that in spite of what we deserved, He has had mercy on us, and has sent His son to pay for our sins.
Sometimes a guilty and condemned criminal waiting to be executed is handed a complete pardon from the governor. God did that for us: The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23).

Yes, God so loved the world that He gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him may not die but may have eternal life (John 3:16).

God explains that we cannot save ourselves, but that salvation is His gift to us sinners: I repeat, it is owing to His favor that salvation is yours through faith. This is not your doing, it is God's gift; neither is it a reward for anything you have accomplished, so let no one pride himself on it (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Notice how the Bible completely contradicts the fond belief of so many people that if they try hard enough they will be able to save themselves by keeping God's law: Never-the-less, knowing that a man is not justified by legal observance but by faith in Jesus Christ, we too have believed in Him in order to be justified by faith in Christ, not by observance of the law; for by works of the law no one will be justified (Galatians 2:16). And again, the just man shall live by faith (Galatians 3:10-11). (See also Galatians 3:12-13; 5:4; Romans 3:20).

The criminal who is handed a pardon, does not receive it because he is better than other criminals. He is guilty and condemned. But he had faith that that piece of paper would really free him. He gave it a try and walked out a free man. In Jesus Christ, God offers His pardon to undeserving sinners. What will you do with it?

The Bible says that if it were possible for us to merit salvation by keeping God's law, there would have been no reason for Christ to die for us. I will not treat God's gracious gift as pointless. If justice is available through the law, then Christ died to no purpose!(Galatians 2:21).

The Bible explains both why we cannot merit our salvation, and what Christ did about it. He died in our place, and took upon Himself our punishment. All men have sinned, and are deprived of the glory of God. All men are now undeservedly justified by the gift of God, through the redemption wrought in Christ Jesus. Through His blood, God made Him the means of expiation for all who believe so that He might be just and might justify those who believe in Jesus For we hold that a man is justified by faith apart from observance of the law (Romans 3:23-28). This passage also explains who will be justified: those who believe in Jesus.

God says, All men have sinned. Take His word for it. Don't try to convince Him that you are an exception. Repent of your sins because Christ died on the cross to pay the penalty for them, not just for the original sin of Adam, but for all sins. The Apostle John wrote, the blood of His Son Jesus cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:7). Accept the pardon He offers you!

Please consider this fact that in Italy, when a pope dies, great posters are plastered on the walls of the cities calling the people to pray for his soul because the church believes that he is suffering in purgatory.

Roman Catholicism, very frankly, cannot save even its own popes. If you are trusting in that system for your salvation, you should fervently hope for one of two things:
  • That the Bible is wrong about how one is saved.
  • That you are a better Catholic than the popes.
Let's face the truth: The Bible is NOT wrong, and you probably are NOT a better Catholic than the popes!

The wonderfully good news is that God offers salvation in His Son for sinners that have not earned it.

Salvation, as we read earlier, is God's gift to us. All we must do to receive a gift is to accept it (Ephesians 2:8-9). To accept God's gift of salvation means to accept His Son because, God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever possesses the Son possesses life; whoever does not possess the Son of God does not possess life (1 John 5:11-12).

For you to accept Christ means to stop believing that you can save yourself by your baptism, by catholic mass, infant baptism, catholic Mary, by being good enough or by your own suffering in purgatory etc.. Shift your faith to a more solid foundation.

Trust Christ to save you! Ask Him to enter your life and to cleanse it as He wishes. When you do, God no longer sees you in your sin, but in Christ's goodness. John, the apostle that Jesus loved most, wrote, All who did accept Him, He empowered to become children of God(John 1:12).

The apostle Paul experienced this in his own life, and wrote, Now that we have been justified by faith, we are at peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through Him we have gained access by faith to the grace in which we now stand (Romans 5:1-2).

God is asking you to trust Christ to save you. He is asking you to give up what you hava always counted on for you salvation; your own goodness and merit. An artist captured this thought with a picture of a child who was dropping a toy to make room for a beautiful bird that was flying down to land on her hand.

God is offering you salvation in Christ. You should know God is only pleased with in His WAY not our ways of salvation. You can NOT clean your life up that you would be worthy of your own salvation.

You can NOT clean up your sin. Nothing will work! You can NOT even control the only sin you can think of which offers the sinner nothing. You still can NOT kick the habit. Seeing this, you abandon every hope of ever being good enough to save myself, and believe God. It is going to be a humbling moment and a very difficult decision. I should face the fact that YOU have been wrong for so many years and ask Christ to come into your heart and cleanse you.

The tears of relief at the end of this inner struggle will run down your cheeks as you walk off a new man, saved by grace, not by works, and bound for heaven. Christ living in you soon cleans up your heart, and will be cleaning things up ever since.

I have seen the same thing happen to all kinds of sinners since then, from the most righteous of sinners, to thieves on drugs who stole the last dollar their own mother had to buy groceries.

Letting Christ cleanse a life after He saves a soul is not always easy. It takes time reading His word to let Him persuade us, but God sends the Spirit of Christ to live in us when we receive His Son, and we are cleansed by His power and not our own. That is the secret.

You too can be saved today by a simple sincere act of faith. Jesus said, All that the Father gives me shall come to me; no one who comes will I ever reject (John 6:37). Will you pause and come to Jesus right now to get this thing settled? You will not be rejected! If you need to, read again anything you have not understood, but don't put off your decision.

God says it is Christ Who saves, (not the church mass or sacraments or rituals etc.) and that those who come to Him will not be cast out. Don't allow yourself to be sidetracked either by people who think they can be saved by their works or by the Catholic Church's claim that it dispenses salvation. The church says: This sacrament of Penance is necessary for salvation for those who have fallen after Baptism, just as Baptism is necessary for those who have not yet been reborn. (from the Catechism of the Catholic Church 1994, Page 255, Paragraph 980) And again: There is no offense, however serious that the Church cannot forgive. (Page 256, Paragraph 982)

Remember, the Church's kind of salvation and forgiveness leaves even its best popes suffering in the flames of Purgatory for some undetermined length of time (which it suggests may be shortened by masses and prayers).

When the Bible speaks of how Jesus Christ saves, it is entirely different: Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. (Hebrews 7:25) Why can't the Catholic church save like this? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me (John 14:6). Don't believe those who offer another salvation. Believe in Jesus ALONE for salvation!

Edited by Justified, 01 January 2012 - 05:37 AM.

For God so loved the world,

that He gave His Only Begotten Son,

that whosoever believeth in Him

should not perish,

but have everlasting life.

John 3:16

Hello Holly!

here is a good E-Sword module for all devout Catholics that are interested in all modules for E-Sword that are intended for use by Catholics

http://www.biblesupp...t-of-scripture/

About the succestio apostolica you should consider that the earliest reference to a popess can be found in the 11th century writing of Martinus Scotus, a monk from the Abbey of St. Martin of Cologne:

“In AD 854, Lotharii 14, Joanna, a woman, succeeded Leo, and reigned two years, five months, and four days.”

In the 12th century, a scribe named Sigebert de Gemlours wrote:

“It is reported that this John was a female, and that she conceived a child by one of her servants. The Pope, becoming pregnant, gave birth to a child, whereof some do not number her among the Pontiffs.”

The most famous and detailed account of the Pope Joan comes from the Chronicron pontificum et imperatum (The Chronicle of the Popes and Emperors), written in the mid-13th century by Martin of Troppau (Martinus Polonus). According to Troppau:

“After Leo IV, John the Englishman (Anglicus), a native of Metz, reigned two years, five months and four days. And the pontificate was vacant for a month. He died in Rome. This man, it is claimed, was a woman and when a girl, accompanied her sweetheart in male costume to Athens; there she advanced in various sciences to the extent that her equal could not be found. So, after having studied for three years in Rome, she had great masters for her pupils and hearers. And when there arose a high opinion in the city of her virtue and knowledge, she was unanimously elected Pope. But during her papacy she became in the family way by a companion. Not knowing the time of the birth, as she was on her way from St Peter's to Lateran she had a painful delivery, between the Coliseum and St Clement's Church, in the street. Having died after, it is said she was buried on the spot.”

Legends say that a stone slab marked the spot where Joan gave birth and was buried, but out of embarrassment Pope Pius V had it removed in the late 16th century. There is also supposedly a statue on this street depicting a mother a child — representations of the popess and her infant.

Believers in the legend point to a number of things that they claim support its truth.

1) Papal processions stopped using the street in question.

2) Popes starting being carried around in a chair with a hole in the bottom, supposedly designed to allow cardinals to check the gender of the person using it.

Try to imagine this in Rome Italy, the year is 1099, and the Holy Father is shifting uneasily in his sedia gestatoria - a sort of sedan chair - as the Papal procession snakes through the streets. It is becoming apparent to the Popes entourage, that something is not quite right, The Pope's face is twisted with pain and he lets out a scream of pain.

The Papal procession stops in a small backstreet between the Colosseum and the Basilica of St. John Lateran. The Holy Father's entourage rush to assist him, but then recoil in horror as the Pope gives birth to a baby!

So goes the legend of Pope Joan the female Pope, but could it be based on truth? Was there, once upon a time, an actual female Pope?

The official stance of the Catholic church is to deny the existence of a female pope. Pope Joan, they say was simply a mythical figure, and yet, the chroniclers who were some of the most distinguished high-calibre writers of their time - Papal Chamberlains, Archbishops and Bishops, claim that a female Pope - Pope Joan did really exist.

Critics will point out that the records which claim that there was a female Pope were recorded two or three hundred years after the event. However this is also true of most of the other Popes of the dark ages and the Catholic church is happy to accept these as genuine. Is the Catholic church prepared to disregard Pope Joan simply because she was shown to be a woman?

There are a number of strange customs associated with the office of Pope that only make sense if the story of Pope Joan was true.

Custom one:

When taking part in Papal processions, the Pope ritually turns his back on one particular street. It is commonly known as "Shunned Street" and it contains an "Edicola" - a wayside shrine which is regarded as the place where Pope Joan gave birth. Attempts to re-dedicate the shrine with a statue of Our Lady have largely failed as the site continues to be infamous as the place where Pope Joan gave birth.

Custom Two:

Right in the middle of St.Peters in Rome is a special altar that is only ever used by the Pope himself. The base of the altar depict a strange series of images. Seven of the images depict a woman wearing a Papal Crown with her face apparently contorted in pain. The eighth image is one of a baby above a representation of a swollen belly. Beneath the belly there are what appear to be contracted folds of skin, giving the impression of a birth in progress.

Custom Three:

A very special chair called the "Stedia Stercoraria" lies hidden in the depths of the Vatican museum. It is a very unusual piece of furniture of commode-like structure, with a keyhole shaped hole cut into the middle of the seat. Commonly known as "The Ball-Feeling Chair", It was used as part of the Election Ceremony for Popes.

Many medieval travellers have recorded the method of it's use: Before an appointment as Pope could be confirmed, the Papal candidate had to remove his clothes (behind a screen) and sit it the special chair. The youngest Deacon present would kneel down and reach out underneath the chair to confirm that the candidate did indeed possess testicles, and was therefore a male.

The obvious question is of course, what else besides the one-time existence of a female Pope could account for the three above mentioned customs. Perhaps there is another rational explanation for them, but I can't think of one - Can you?

William Huw is an ex- Psychiatric Nurse who now makes his living from acting and writing. His speciality is writing about strange stories, inexplicable happenings and unsolved mysteries, and has a series of many such articles entitled "The Mystery Files" which you can find at: http://gaizy.hubpages.com/

As late as 1600, there was evidently a bust of Johannes VIII, femina ex Anglia in a row of papal busts at the Siena Cathedral.

So in a medieval mystery of the Catholic Church lies evidence of a woman pope, with clues buried in ancient parchment, artwork and writings, even in tarot cards and a bizarre chair once used in a Vatican ritual.

Was there a Pope Joan -- a woman with nerve enough to disguise herself as a man and serve as pope for more than two years in the ninth century? It is one of the world's oldest mysteries. Her story first appeared in histories written by medieval monks, but today the Catholic Church dismisses it.

"Ninety percent of me thinks there was a Pope Joan," says Mary Malone, a former nun who wrote a history of women and Christianity.

Donna Cross, a novelist who spent seven years researching the time period, says the historical evidence is there. "I would say it's the weight of evidence -- over 500 chronicle accounts of her existence."

Life was often short and brutal for women living in A.D. 800.

"No woman would have been allowed to appear on the streets in public," says Malone. "That named you as a prostitute immediately. Women were confined to their homes."

In the town of Mainz, Germany, where it is thought the girl who might have became Pope Joan grew up, most people lived in mud huts. The average life span was only 30 or 40 years.

But English missionaries were bringing Christianity to Germany, and they created a monastery called Fulda, which became a center of education, books and conversation for travelers -- but it was only for boys.

In his "History of Emperors and Popes," a monk named Martin Polonus who was a close adviser to the pope wrote about a young woman from Mainz who learned Greek and Latin and became "proficient in a diversity of branches of knowledge."

Cross and other historians say a girl studying at the monastery would have no choice but to disguise herself as a boy. But how was it possible to keep the secret?

"First of all, you might want to remember that clerical robes are very body-disguising," says Cross. "Also, in the ninth century, personal hygiene was nonexistent. Nobody bathed. They washed their hands, their face, their feet, but they didn't bathe."

Also, clergy members were required to be clean shaven, and malnutrition made most men and women physically gaunt.

Polonus wrote that this woman was "led to Athens dressed in the clothes of a man by a certain lover of hers." Then, according to the 500 accounts, the woman made her way to Rome.

In the ninth century, Rome and the Vatican were nothing like today's solemn and civilized center of culture and faith. Then the center of the Christian faith was home to bawdy monks, scheming cardinals, cross-dressing saints, intrigue, melodrama, corruption and violence.

"Popes ... killed each other off, hammered each other to death," says Mary Malone, the former nun. "There were 12-year-old popes ... we have knowledge of a 5-year-old archbishop. ... It was a very odd time in history."

That also means it would have been a time of opportunity for someone with ambition and nerve. The chronicles say that's how Joan, known as John Anglicus, or English John, became secretary to a curia, a cardinal, and then, as Polonus writes, "the choice of all for pope" in the year A.D. 855.

Clues in Art

If you travel to Italy and ask questions about Pope Joan, many people will direct you toward the clues embedded in art, literature and architecture.

The Renaissance poet Giovanni Boccaccio, best known for writing "The Decameron," also wrote a book on "100 Famous Women." No. 51 is Pope Joan.

Rare book dealers in Rome pull ancient tarot cards from their shelves. The card for hidden knowledge is "La Papessa" -- the Female Pope.

Quotes From Researchers

Travel north to Siena to the Duomo, where inside the cathedral is a gallery of terra-cotta busts depicting 170 popes, in no particular order. In the 17th century, Cardinal Baronuis, the Vatican librarian, wrote that one of the faces was a female -- Joan the Female Pope.

Baronius also wrote that the pope at the time decreed that the statue be destroyed, but some say the local archbishop didn't want a good statue go to waste.

"The statue was transformed," believes Cross. "I mean, literally, it was scraped off, her name, and written on top of Pope Zachary."

At the Basilica in St. Peter's Square are carvings by Bernini, one of the most famous artists of the 17th century. Among the carvings are eight images of a woman wearing a papal crown, and the images seem to tell the story of a woman giving birth and a baby being born.

Medieval manuscripts tell a similar tale: Two-and-a-half years into her reign, Pope Joan was in the midst of a papal procession, a three-mile trip to the Church of the Lateran in Rome, when suddenly at a crossroads, she felt sharp pains in her stomach.

She was having contractions, the stories say. The unthinkable happened -- the pope was having a baby.

"And then, shock and horror," says Malone. "And then the story gets very confused, because some of the records say she was killed and her child was killed right on the spot. Other records say she was sent to a convent and that her son grew up and later became bishop of Ostia."

Stories vary -- some say the crowd stoned her to death, others say she was dragged from the tail of a horse -- but in most accounts, Pope Joan perished that day.

In the decades that followed, the intersection was called the Vicus Papissa -- the Street of the Female Pope -- and for more than 100 years, popes would take a detour to avoid the shameful intersection.

Polonus writes: "The Lord Pope always turns aside from the street ... because of the abhorrence of the event."

But how do historians explain the enormous purple marble chair on which popes once sat as they were crowned. The chair has a strange opening, something like a toilet seat, reportedly used to check "testiculos habet" -- or whether the pope had testicles.

David Dawson Vasquez, the director of Catholic University of America's Rome program, says that the Vatican was just using the most impressive chair it had.

"Because it's elaborate, it's purple. It was the most expensive marble of Roman times, and so it was only used for the emperor," Vasquez says. "The hole is there because it was used by the imperial Romans, perhaps as a toilet, perhaps as a birthing chair. It doesn't matter if there's a hole there, because you can still sit there and be crowned."

Others say it was a symbol of the pope giving birth to the Mother Church. Either way, newly minted Protestants in the 1500s had a field day making fun of the chair, and so it was hidden from view.

Although the Catholic Church insist that the female Pope Joan never existed, there are a number of strange items and customs associated with the office of Pope that perhaps suggest that a female Pope once reigned as pontiff.

  • During Papal processions, it is said that the Pope will ritually turn his back on one particular Roman street. It is popularly known as "The Shunned Street" and contains a wayside shrine or "Edicola" which is said to be the spot where the female Pope Joan gave birth. Despite a 17th century attempt to re-dedicate the shrine with a statue of Our Lady, the site is still the main attraction for visitors seeking evidence of the Female Pope.
  • In the Centre of St. Peter's in Rome, is an altar that is only ever used by the Pope. It has an altar-cover known as a "Baldaccino" which was produced in the 17th century by the sculptor Bernini, the base of which depict eight strange figures. Seven of the figures portray a woman's face, apparently in stages of agony - She is wearing a Papal crown (indicative of a female Pope). The eighth face however, is of a baby, beneath which is a representation of a large swollen belly. Beneath the belly there appears to be contracted folds of skin, giving the impression of a birth in progress.
  • Hidden in the depths of the Vatican Museum is a very special chair. The "Stedia Stercoraria". This is a chair of an unusual design, a commode-like construction with a large keyhole shaped orifice cut into the middle of the seat. The seat is popularly known as "The Ball-Feeling Chair". It was used in the Election Ceremony for Popes. The method of it's use has been recorded by many medieval travellers: Before an appointment as Pope could be confirmed, the candidate had to disrobe and sit it the special chair. The youngest Deacon present would then be required to kneel down and reach under the chair to confirm that the candidate did possess testicles. The Roman Church, according to legend, stipulated that anyone elected Pope should prove that his genitalia were intact. To this end a special chair was fashioned that had a horseshoe-shaped seat. The Pope to be would sit on the seat and the cardinals would pass by, checking the papal procession and proclaiming: ‘testiculos duos habet et bene pendentes’. A loose translation being: ‘two testicles he has and well-hung ones’.
The obvious questions are - If there never was a female Pope, then:
  • Why does the Pope turn away from "The Shunned Street"?
  • What is being depicted on the "Baldaccino" in St. Peters?
  • Why was the "Stedia Stercoraria" - the "Ball feeling Chair" deemed necessary?

This information from The First Sex by Elizabeth Gould Davis (Penguin 1971) provides an answer:

‘Joan, a handsome young English girl made her way to Athens disguised as a monk... armed with a degree in philosophy, she came to Rome where Pope Leo IV made her a cardinal. Upon Leo’s death in 853 Joan was elected Pope by her fellow cardinals.

The Catholic Encyclopaedia goes on to say, “she served as Pope for two years, four months and eight days, when she was discovered to be a woman and stoned to death (she gave birth during a papal procession)”...

‘The name “John VIII, a woman from England” graced the papal list from 855 to 1601 ...(when she was)... officially declared mythical... Pope John (872-882) who is now numbered VIII was for seven centuries listed as John IX.

‘From the time of Pope Joan, all candidates for the papacy for 700 years had to undergo a physical examination to prove their sex... (this) examination went into effect in 855... Benedict was the first of the popes to submit to the test.’

The Lord Jesus has said:

"You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavor, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men. You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can't be hidden. Neither do you light a lamp, and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house. Even so, let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven." Matthew 5:13-16

Since primitive times, salt has been used to preserve meat and other foods. Salt prevents decay and degradation of food products. In the same way, The Lord Jesus taught HIS FOLLOWERS TO POINT OTHERS TO THE WAY OF LIFE, to show how they might be preserved from death and destruction. He pointed out how their life purpose depended on their saltiness. If they were not helping others TO BE SAVED, then they were not serving their worthwhile life destiny.

As today, salt served an important gustatory purpose. People would use salt to bring out the inherent flavor of foods. By comparing His followers to salt, Jesus indicated that they were to add flavor, or seasoning, to society. The people of God were to spice things up, to improve the flavor of life.

By teaching God's TRUTH and ministering to others, salty folks can make life better for all. Salt has long been used as a cleaning agent. Jesus could have been urging His followers to help clean up a godless world by living godly lives and setting an example for others. By retaining their loyalty and steadfastness to Him, Jesus' followers would also retain their value to His Kingdom cause.

Salt has always been useful for thawing and melting ice. In our day, we spread salt on roadways for this purpose. By serving as salt, and loving others, Jesus' followers might thaw people's hearts with their kindness, making them open to friendship, relationships, and to God's TRUTH.

To liken a follower of Jesus to salt is to understand that salt is a preservative and if we live right and set good examples for others to follow and lead them to Jesus, we help preserve them from corruption. God uses us as light to illuminate the minds of others by spreading The Word in TRUTH and LOVE.

Jesus` followers carry with them the words and teachings of Jesus which are seen as salt and light to the world.

If we are going to save this world from corruption and destruction, we must come into close contact with people so that we can preserve them.

Preserve:

1) keep safe from harm or injury.

2) treat (food) to prevent its decomposition.

If we are simply in physical contact with the world, we won’t preserve it. We need to treat the world, and do something to prevent corruption from taking place.

Our words and actions are needed to preserve people from corruption and destruction.

First, we may need to help people realize they are corrupt. If you don’t believe your food needs to be wrapped in salt, or put in the fridge, you’ll leave it on the counter.

We first must realize the food will perish if not covered in salt or put in the fridge. If people don’t think they are sick, they won’t go to the Doctor.

First, we must help people realize they are corrupt; that they have a problem and are not in right standing with God.

Once they believe this, things can change.

We share God’s Word and then pray that The Holy Spirit would take those words and change their hearts by His power.

The Holy Spirit will help break down the indifference of the typical pagan or unborn christian who thinks to be a real Christian and has no conviction of sin, who holds a low regard for righteousness, and who pays no heed to warnings of the coming judgment.
