E-Sword HotKey works in conjunction with E-Sword on Microsoft Windows. With E-Sword running, while working in any other program, such as Mozilla Firefox, IE, MS-Word, WordPad, Adobe PDF file, etc, select a section of text that contains a Bible Text Reference, press the Ctrl key and C (Ctrl+C) to copy the selected text to the Windows Clipboard, then press the F11 key, the default hot key, which HotKey is looking for. HotKey then searches for the first Bible Text Reference, formats it some, then brings E-Sword to the front and tells E-Sword to look up the text. That is all that E-Sword HotKey does. Currently it works for English Bible book names and abbreviations only. Currently, no Bible chapter and verse validation is performed by HotKey. If a Reference is invalid, E-Sword will let you know!

HotKey allows you to change the hot key that HotKey will respond to. Click the Hotkey menu, and then select which modification keys (Ctrl, Alt, Shift) that you would like your new hot key to have, and press the key on the keyboard you want to use for your hot key. Then Click the OK button on the key selection form.

E-Sword HotKey has 2 modes of operation, Simple, and Search.
-- Simple mode: HotKey only removes formating that E-Sword will not recognize, such as periods and parentheses. You must select the Bible reference fairly accurately for Simple mode to work correctly.
-- Search mode: HotKey actively searches for the first recognizable Bible reference and sends that to E-Sword. You only need to be sure to include the Bible reference in your selected text. For this mode to work, HotKey has a list of Bible book names and common abbreviations. You can edit this list to add or remove abbreviations to match your needs. USE SEARCH MODE for easy of use...

New for version 3 of e-Sword HotKey. If you have installed e-Sword Macros on your system (see http://www.e-sword.net/extras.html), then e-Sword HotKey will create a new menu item called "Macro" which will interface with e-Sword Macros. Hightlight a section of your document that contains scripture references and copy it to the clipboard. Press the Macro HotKey (default=Ctrl+')(control quote), and HotKey will search the selected text, find the scripture references, and then look them up in e-Sword in the currently selected Bible version as set by HotKey (not e-Sword) and place the references back into the Windows clipboard. You can then paste them into your current working document if it is an text editor, or email client program.

Brent,

Thank you for responding so quickly!  This was actually v2018.0323 according to the “about”.  1) Issue: Using (#) in the decorations box and using the checkbox for “Include Version Abbreviation” work great and remain when you go out of the program.  But the checkbox for “Decorate Reference” does not remain checked when you go out of the program. That said, it is really nice to just have this option!   2) Issue: The menu selections Search, Version, and Copy/Style under the Macro menu selection do not <<seem>> do anything anymore.  3) Issue: Is there a switch to get book abbreviations rather than full book names?   I can see how to get tooltips with abbreviations but not just abbreviations.  3) Suggestion:  An option to put beginning & ending quotes around the scripture would be really helpful for some of us.   ----   We had held off upgrading until now. This version is really fast!!!   Thanks so much again for making it available!!!

Steve - Yeah, 2018.0323 is the current version.  I guess I have not updated this upload posting.

1) correct - this option is not sticky.  My habits are that I reboot every month or so thus it is not an issue for me.  I can see where you might want it to remember however.

2) Macro options work here. They only work if you have e-Sword and the e-Sword Macros (any version) installed.  Be sure your e-Sword Macro version matches your version of e-Sword

3) Quotes around scripture - probably not that hard to add.  I'll consider it.

NOTE - #1 and #3 only apply to Bible Hotkey, and not to the e-Sword Macro Hotkey.

Steve - I posted a new update with #1 and #3 added.  Notes - adding quotes to some versions and some texts may not produce the results desired if there are quotes already included.  Consider this a trial run.

Brent,

Wow!!! Overnight!!!  Thanks so much!!!  Both work Great!!!   The quotes will be helpful to some even if it is a trial run.  Thank you for the clarification on #2.  I have not used portions of e-Sword Macro for years because Bible Hotkey works so well for everything.  Unfortunately I misnumbered one of the items:  Is there a switch to get book abbreviations rather than full book names or tooltips?   Thanks again!

Oh - I see your numbering, yeah - I did #1 and what would be #4.  But abbreviations, you mean like a tooltip but without the underscore?  I'm curious in how you use HotKey?

Steve - download the latest file again - I added an abbreviation function,  Ctrl+Alt+Shift+F.

Brent,

Again thanks so much!!!  This was extremely helpful!!!  E-Sword Hotkey is my most used tool and each time we have put it on others computers, they too have said the same thing.  Your additions are much appreciated.

Brent,

Installed 2019.1007.  I am having an issue that is similar to one you helped me with a few years ago.  It is only showing a few bibles, namely AKJV, AKJV+, FBV, KJV, KJV+, RV and YLT.

In e-Sword, I have the following Bibles that I use: KJV, KJV+ NAS77, NASB, French LS.  I am using word 2016 and have word macros installed on a Win 10 Pro machine version 1903 build 18362.592. When I goto Macros -?Select Version , I get an error that says "WSE_NOTIFY - Error downloading index file / WSE_NOTIFY=1"

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

With His Blessings,
Corby

BH,

Both Hotkey and Tool Tip sound like great products, and they are certainly highly recommended but I have some issues:

1. Hotkey doesn't even start on my pc - windows 10 pro 1903 with e-Sword 12.1.0 and Office 365

2. BTW - Same is true for Tool Tip

What might I be missing or doing wrong?

Hi Tom,

Brent Hildebrand is no longer able to help in any respect with e-Sword HotKey, or any other program he had written considering that he has recently gone to be with the Lord (http://www.biblesupp...ge-2#entry38326)
