Synopsis

First Steps in Faith by R. A. Torrey is a concise yet profound guide aimed at helping new believers and those exploring the Christian faith to understand the essentials of trusting in Jesus Christ. The book emphasizes that salvation is rooted in simple faith in God's promises, and it seeks to clarify common misconceptions about what it means to become a Christian.

Torrey begins by asserting that salvation is entirely by grace through faith, not based on human effort or works. He underscores the importance of understanding that Christ’s atoning sacrifice on the cross is sufficient to cover all sins and that accepting Christ involves trusting in His finished work rather than personal merit. The author reassures readers that faith is straightforward and accessible to everyone, regardless of background or past mistakes.

A central theme in the book is the necessity of a personal decision to accept Christ. Torrey encourages readers to recognize their need for salvation, confess their sins, and believe that Jesus is the Savior who died and rose again for them. He stresses that this decision is a step of faith—trusting in God's promises—and not a matter of feeling or emotion alone. The act of faith, according to Torrey, is simply believing God's Word and trusting Jesus as Lord and Savior.

Torrey also addresses common doubts and fears, reassuring readers that salvation is not dependent on feelings but on the truth of God's promises. He explains that new believers should rest confidently on God's Word, knowing that His promises are sure and trustworthy. The book highlights the importance of reading the Bible, praying, and obeying God's commandments as vital steps in the Christian walk, emphasizing that faith is the beginning, but growth involves ongoing trust and obedience.

Furthermore, Torrey emphasizes the importance of assurance—knowing that one has truly been saved. He clarifies that assurance comes through obedience and a desire to follow Christ, not through feelings or subjective experiences. The book concludes with encouragement for new believers to continue growing in faith, to witness to others, and to rely on God's grace every day.

In summary, First Steps in Faith is a practical and encouraging introduction to the Christian life, emphasizing that salvation is a gift received by simple faith, and that the Christian walk begins with trusting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
