Torrey explores the Bible to address "those objections of which the modern infidel makes the most, and which are most puzzling to many Christians." First published in 1907, but the issues covered are surprisingly current. A thoughtful read for anyone with doubts or questions about the Bible's authenticity.

Summary of "Difficulties in the Bible" by R. A. Torrey
In "Difficulties in the Bible," R. A. Torrey addresses some of the most common and challenging questions that skeptics, scholars, and believers alike have raised regarding the Bible's teachings, historical accounts, and moral standards. His primary goal is to demonstrate that these difficulties are resolvable through careful study, proper understanding, and a recognition of the Bible’s divine inspiration.
Torrey begins by emphasizing the importance of approaching the Bible with a proper attitude—viewing it as God's inspired Word rather than a human document. He advocates for honest inquiry and cautions against superficial judgments that dismiss the Bible because of perceived contradictions or moral issues. Instead, he encourages readers to consider the historical, cultural, and linguistic contexts of biblical texts.
One of the key areas of difficulty he explores is the issue of apparent contradictions within the scriptures. For example, differences in the genealogies of Jesus in Matthew and Luke are addressed. Torrey explains that these discrepancies can be understood by recognizing the different purposes of the genealogies—one tracing legal royal descent, the other biological lineage—and by understanding the biblical conventions of genealogy recording.
Another significant challenge is the question of scientific and historical accuracy. Critics often point to apparent discrepancies between the Bible and scientific discoveries or archaeological findings. Torrey argues that the Bible is generally accurate historically and scientifically, especially when read in its proper context. He notes that some apparent contradictions result from misinterpretations or overly literal readings of poetic or figurative language.
Torrey also discusses moral and ethical issues, such as the violent commands in the Old Testament or the apparent harshness of certain divine judgments. He clarifies that these passages must be understood within their historical and theological framework, recognizing God's justice and the consequences of human sin. He emphasizes God's love and mercy as overarching themes that underpin these difficult texts.
The issue of miracles is another focal point. Skeptics often dismiss miracles as impossible or as myths. Torrey defends the reality of miracles as consistent with the divine power of God, citing biblical instances and emphasizing that miracles are signs of divine authority and truth.
Throughout the book, Torrey advocates for a balanced approach—acknowledging genuine difficulties without dismissing the Bible's divine inspiration. He encourages believers to trust in God's sovereignty and wisdom, even when some passages seem perplexing. He suggests that many difficulties can be resolved through diligent study, prayer, and a humble acknowledgment of human limitations in fully understanding divine mysteries.
In conclusion, Torrey's "Difficulties in the Bible" aims to strengthen faith and promote a thoughtful, respectful approach to biblical questions. He reassures readers that, with proper understanding, many of the so-called difficulties are not insurmountable and that the Bible remains a reliable, divine revelation suitable for guiding lives and revealing God's truth.

I have only a very few of Torrey's works, and those that I've got have shown themselves to be quite invaluable. I have no doubt that this book will also show itself to be invaluable.
It appears to me that Reuben Torrey was around at the same time as Smith Wigglesworth, but I'm not certain if the two knew each other. With that said, I have the distinct impression that Torrey was Pentecostal in his theology (after having read his book, Baptism with the Holy Spirit) as was Smith Wigglesworth.
Thank you for this book, and like other works by Torrey, I will enjoy reading it.
Blessings,
May YAH bless you for sharing this wonderful resource! Thank you!
