Forty Years in the Mormon Church - Why I Left It

Written by R.C. Evans in 1920 after over forty years in the Mormon Church (including over 20 years in the leadership).

About the Author

On April 12, 1897, at a general conference of the Reorganized Latter-Day Saints Church, Evans was made an apostle and a member of the Council of Twelve Apostles. On April 20, 1902, Evans became a counselor in the First Presidency to Joseph Smith III, the Prophet–President of the RLDS Church. In 1909, Evans was released from the First Presidency and was ordained to the office of bishop. As a bishop, Evans was given a specific jurisdiction over the church in Canada.

In 1918, Evans broke with the RLDS Church. Evans had complained about Prophet–President Frederick M. Smith's administrative style and the church's continuing denials that Latter Day Saint movement founder Joseph Smith, Jr. had practiced and taught plural marriage. A number of RLDS Church members in Toronto followed Evans, and they began a church they called the Church of the Christian Brotherhood.

In 1920, Evans published a book explaining why he left the RLDS Church. He wrote that while the "Reorganized 'Mormon Church' does not teach or practice polygamy", the "great sin" of the church "is in denying that Joseph Smith, their prophet, seer and revelator, received revelations commanding the church to enter into that God dishonoring and woman debasing doctrine under pain of eternal damnation".Faced with these facts, Evans concluded that he "could no longer believe that God and Christ visited and conversed with Smith" and that he must have been a false prophet. Although it was not central to his reasoning, Evans also mentioned that Frederick M. Smith was "neither a prophet, seer, revelator nor God's mouth-piece to the church, but is an autocrat, cruel and tricky, and selfish in his methods."

The book was not numbered properly, and it's a mess to navigate from within the reference library. The table of contents above helps somewhat but it is not enjoyable and I can't be certain I am reading it in order.

Can someone PLEASE direct me to a verse in the scripture where God condemns a man for having MORE than ONE wife? I know St. Paul said a man should rather marry a wife if he "burns" with lust obviously, but I cannot find any scripture that God directly condemns polygamy as a sin.

Goodness, even the Israelite Kings had "brothels"...and those where kings that did "right in the eyes of the LORD...". Many African cultures in Africa, (our President included) has more than one wife as it is part of their culture.

I understand the concept that it is better NOT to marry as being married divides one's attention and one cannot enjoy more time with the LORD, but I'm sorry, but until some person can actuallt\y prove from scripture that God condemns the marriage of more than ONE woman, this is NOT sinning in my eyes!

Actually, in the true Godly sense, marriage in God's sense is when a man and a woman become ONE flesh, through the act of sexual intimacy. How many sexual immoral orgies or multiple sexual acts between men and woman (without the idea to be husband and wives) has been done over the centuries? They don't know it, but in God's eyes, all those men and women knowingly or unknowingly became ONE FLESH and are married in God's eyes. THAT is what makes prostitution so bad because that man or woman has hundred's of wives or husbands!

True marriage is the becoming of ONE FLESH in front of God's eyes. The tradition of signing a contract is the government's way of marriage, releasing you from those other partners you slept with, but GOD is the one to worry about, for HE keeps count of the union of your flesh!

So, I do not see it wrong if you could afford more than one wife...provided you WANT to marry her in front of God and that you could take care of all your wives.

Otherwise, prove me wrong with scripture. :-)

Sure thing Prince Wynand

Deu 17:14 When you are come to the land which the LORD your God gives you, and shall possess it, and shall dwell therein, and shall say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me;
Deu 17:15 You shall in any wise SET HIM KING over you, whom the LORD your God shall choose: one from among your brothers shall you set king over you: you may not set a stranger over you, which is not your brother.
Deu 17:17 NEITHER SHALL HE MULTIPLY WIVES TO HIMSELF, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.

Even though this was written in the Torah/Pentateuch for the King not to multiply wives, King David & King Solomon multiplied wives - and it became their downfall for both men.

When you become a Christian, receiving the Holy Spirit into your heart, you become a "King and a Priest".

Rev 1:5 And from JESUS CHRIST, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. To him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
"Rev 1:6 And HAS MADE US KINGS AND PRIESTS to God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Therefore we being Kings, one man should have on wife.

Furthermore, we have moved into a greater critical analysis in the New Testament.
For example, Old Testament Jewish marriage Laws are barbaric by today's standards, yet, it was the greatest Law for it's time period. Just as the abolishing of slavery by Wilburforce in England, and Abraham Lincoln in the USA, were the greatest Law for their time period.
All these examples are the same, in that they are greater priorities for their status quo. Real Status quo establishes Law to go forward, any going back is sin.
