billfarkas' Blog > John 3:16 and Wrath

Posted billfarkas on 04 June 2016 - 09:19 PM

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Probably the most popular, most quoted, most recognized Bible verse since... ever... well, long before Tim Tebow, anyway.

"But if He's a God of love, I don't understand how He could send anyone to Hell?!"

Condemnation!...

billfarkas' Blog > "Esau I Have Hated"

"Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated." Like a previous entry to this blog ("I never Knew You"), these words, quoted by Paul in Romans 9, have also caused considerable consternation among sincere students of Scripture. I've been sitting on this one for a while, hopefully this brief theodicy will be of benefit to someone here.

Hate?! How can God hate...

It's been a while since my last entry, but I can explain...I'm sure you've all heard the expression, "Be careful what you pray for - you just might get it." Well...quite a few months ago I made the mistake of asking God to show me anything that was keeping me from getting closer to Him. Bless His Holy Name!! He is faithful! Those of you who have been walki...

billfarkas' Blog > The Essential Nature of the Trinity

Posted billfarkas on 25 August 2012 - 08:00 AM

The discussion that came out of my last entry got me to meditating on the Trinity.  Why is it so important?  Why die on that hill? For very good reason!  A: because the Bible teaches it.  B: because our very justification depends on it.  Without the Trinity we are still lost in our sins.Let me illustrate this point with the best analogy on Earth - the...

"I never knew you. Depart from me."Of all the difficult sayings uttered by Christ during His earthly ministry, this one has quite possibly caused more spiritual heartburn than any other among those who use His name.  I've spoken to many saints over the years who have been tormented at the thought of one day hearing these words from the Lord th...

billfarkas' Blog > The Origin and Nature of Sin

Posted billfarkas on 07 July 2012 - 10:25 PM

There are a few basic theological principles, that when properly understood, help you make sense of the weightier issues that can really "stick in your craw."  In recent years I have been collecting and scouring through various systematic theologies in search of sin...the meaning/nature of sin, that is.  This may sound crazy, but as with all thing...

Theology is all about connecting the dots.  A few weeks ago during Sunday worship, I was singing along with the rest of the congregation...  and, as usual, I was also ruminating theologically inside my own head...  and a thought occurred to me ...something I hadn't connected before ...something bearing profound relevance to my two previous entries.The...

billfarkas' Blog > The Sin of Obedience

Posted billfarkas on 08 May 2012 - 06:57 PM

Yeah the title is deliberately evocative, but let me explain...There are those here who are always reminding us to behave and follow the rules or God isn't going to like us anymore.  After all, according to them Hebrews 10:26 says if we "sin willfully" after we've been saved we'll lose our salvation.First off, if there's a long lis...

Just a few theological ruminations...Why do we do the things we do?  Those who believe in Grace and Eternal Security are often maligned for being too libertine, and those who say they are just trying to "live for Christ" are accused of legalism.  So...what's the difference?Well, I got to thinking...First off, Titus 2:11, 12 says: For the grace...
