Topics I've Started

Totally Off Topic: BibleTech 2013

29 August 2012 - 06:03 PM

All:

I obviously haven't been paying attention to much in recent months.

BibleTech 2013 will be held 15 and 16 March 2013, in Seattle.

I'm not sure where in Seattle it will be held, but I do plan to attend it next year.

The Spreadsheet is in ODF format. Currently maintained using LibreOffice 3.5.x..

Changes from 20120514a:
  • Background colour added to the first resource listed for each vendor;

e-Sword Collectables

06 June 2012 - 11:13 PM

All:

In responding to another post, it occurred to me that there might be e-Sword collectibles out there. Things related to e-Sword, that somebody might collect. The only things I am aware of, are the following:
  • CDs distributed by Rick;
  • CDs distributed by eStudySource;
  • CDs distributed by users;
  • CDs that were commercially distributed, without Rick's approval;
  • CDs sold by non-profit organizations, with Rick's approval;
  • Bibles that were distributed with e-Sword discs in them;
What other e-Sword related ephemera exists?

Is anybody interested in constructing a comprehensive list of CDs and Bibles for the categories I listed?

Lists of resources

14 May 2012 - 06:57 PM

All:

Probably posting this in the wrong place, but anyway.
(Moderators, move it to wherever you think is most appropriate.)

http://www.biblesupp...word-resources/
is a PDF. Personally, I can't read that PDF. The data it contains simply doesn't make sense to me.
(The data in the spreadsheet does make sense to me.)

Question 1:
Just how useful are resource lists that were created, and maintained in a spreadsheet.

What would make it easier for people to utilize the data in those lists.
[ AFAIK, Josh has a ban on file formats other than PDF, SQLite, and ZIP compression. ]

Creating/migrating resource lists to an SQLite file --- which is how they should have been done in the first place --- is an option. The major/only objection to distribution of the SQLite file, is the difficulty most (?) people have in reading data in SQLite files. The obvious solution --- write a program to read the database --- is not one that I want to engage in, at this point in time.

Asking, because I'm thinking seriously about creating lists of resources for several other Biblical Software programs. I will publicly distribute these lists, if other people can understand, and use them.

Question 2:
In an ideal world, which Biblical software programs would it be most useful to have a list of available resources, and where they could be obtained from?

### Caution: Tech Talk Ahead ###

Database specification:
Resource_Table:
  • ID_Number: Autonumber. Used to track records. Makes it easier to add/edit/delete data;
  • Program: Biblical software program the resource is for;
  • Version_Number: Version number of the software that the resource is for;
  • Resource_Name: Name of the resource. EG: KJVA, NRSV-CE;
  • Resource_Type: Type of resource: Bible, Commentary, etc. Terms are restricted to the program the resource is used by;
  • Cost: How much the resource sells for;
  • Vendor: Who sells/distributes the resource;
  • URL: Website that offers the resource;
  • Date_Added: Date the resource was publicly released;
  • Date_Removed: Date the resource was withdrawn from distribution;
Data_Update:
  • ID_Number: Autonumber. Used to track records. Makes it easier to add/edit/delete data;
  • Date_of_Update: Date the database was last changed;
  • What_was_updated: What was changed: Resources added, Resources verified, etc;
I don't think that the average Biblical software user is going to know SQL well enough to be able to pull out the data that they want, from an SQLite database. Whilst I could, at least in theory, write a program whose sole function is to read the database for those users, I don't want to get bogged down in tech support issues --- especially when it involves platforms I don't use/have access to/loathe with a passion.

Ben's Pocket e-Sword Tool.

This tool was released on 10 March 2006.
There is _NO_ support for this tool.

Ben no longer has:
  • Source code;
  • Documentation;
  • Binary code;
for this tool.

If you don't know what this tool does, do not download it.

If you don't know how to use this tool, do not download it.

I am uploading it here, purely because I don't want to search my archives every time Ben points somebody to me for a copy of this tool.
  • This tool was abandoned before Josh, or most of the other users on the board started using e-Sword;
  • Ben Krueger, the developer of this program, is unable to answer questions about how to use this tool;
  • The majority of users of this tool have wandered into other pastures, like iOS, or Android;
  • I do not have any documentation on using this tool, in my e-Sword Archives;
  • I do not have any documentation on using this tool, in my Pocket e-Sword Archives;
