#11697 Detecting (finding) of Study Notes in e-Sword

Posted by Mike_S on 14 August 2012 - 04:05 PM in e-Sword Questions & Answers

Hi Naomi

It's easier and quicker to have you consult the user guide in e-Sword (F1 or Help - Contents). Start around page 148, the Study Notes Advanced topic, it's an easy read. Short story, the Study Notes generally are in \Documents and Settings\UserName\My Documents\e-Sword. Look for the files with the '.notx' extension.

If you should ever point e-Sword to a different location and select a file, e-Sword will expect your files to always remain there, so you may need to point e-Sword back to the default location(s) to put things back to, well, default :) - page 55 of the guide is helpful here.

Never mind, I got it figured out, sorta :)

#11653 unable to download bibles from e-sword

Posted by Mike_S on 13 August 2012 - 03:42 PM in e-Sword Modules / Resources

I have had e-sword connected on line to tech support while program is running,

Though I haven't used the 'Technical Support...' link from 'Help' I do believe it's only a link that opens in your internet browser.

You might check your DEP (Data Execution Prevention) settings.

If you're the administrator of the system you might try right-clicking 'e-Sword.exe' - 'Run as...', make sure the file is running as an admin.

+1 to clint45's suggestion

This is issue has me pulling my hair out, the symptons in many cases make little sense. A neighbor's kid could likely get e-Sword installed and setup in a matter of moments.

#11645 unable to download bibles from e-sword

If you're sure your connection is not the problem, there may be another security tool interferring with e-Sword.exe, make sure this file is given permission to access the internet. You may find an exclusions list in the particular tool, better is when you for the first time try to run an executable the software will alert you and you can check a box or make a change right then and there to 'allow' the software to run.

Whatever is blocking this file, give e-Sword permission to run and connect to the internet. Post back if tis is not the problem.

#11533 Edit a finished .topx file...?

Posted by Mike_S on 08 August 2012 - 01:02 AM in e-Sword Modules / Resources

Thanks Josh.

If I can plead a bit of ignorance here, I've not edited or used any editor to date, by Topic Editor I assume you mean Topic Note Editor?

I did copy the file I mentioned over to MyDocs\e-Sword to load it in the editor, works good so far but I do have a few more questions...

Can the section or chapter text be edited using TNE or was this resource done with TTTNT? I assumed it was the header info but when I change the text and save it, it doesn't seem to take. As an example, the section or chapter info for Table Talks is pretty bad.

Also, many paragraphs use hard breaks, have maybe 10 or 12 words per line and don't wrap or span the width of the viewer. I have to backspace each line to create a new paragraph. Is there a way to highlight the paragraph and remove the new line breaks so each line will span the width of the viewer minus any indentation I use.

Any advice is appreciated :)

#11532 browser problems

mike

os? optimal server..Don't have any idea what OS is if it is not this...I have e-sword on Internet explorer and as of the moment I am having some issue with it and hopefully big paws can help me out with the problem..As far as security issues no because I got my bookmarks from internet explorer with no problems.

As far as trying to download I only get the page where it say's talks about downloading and supporting..I have no doubt it is downloading because it say's finished afterwards and the when I right click well right back to where I was and we download again and again and again and nothing happens.

No, I have no clue what so ever in how to do this sorry :(

It also mentions something about a bimary file if I want to save it and I say yes..but what it does...got me.

By OS I mean operating system, the version of Windows you're using, XP, Vista, 7 - x86, x64?

I'm not sure what you mean by "I have e-Sword on Internet Explorer"?

Your bookmarks versus the security tools, anti-virus, malware, & firewall software that could be affecting your system are different topics altogether.

My advice at this point is to get a family member or friend to sit down with you and help you thru some of this, getting the e-Sword installer is pretty straight-forward, the direct link for the file can be found here - http://www.e-sword.net/downloads.html - it's as simple as clicking the white down arrow for the full installer (50.6 MB), and allowing the download to complete. Once done, double-clicking the file (setup1010.exe) should launch the installer, read carefully the instructions, select install.

In Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) if you right-click (once) setup1010.exe you should get a popup menu, scroll down to 'Properties'. When the 'Properties' dialog pops up, on the 'General' tab you should see 'Size', it should match the info I provided in my previous post - 50.6 MB (53,158,717 bytes).

#11527 browser problems

Posted by Mike_S on 07 August 2012 - 09:03 PM in e-Sword Questions & Answers

Both; well I should say I downloaded firefox and supposedly e-sword but it seems to be invisible or intouchable all I get and see is the following setup1010(1).exe, setup1010(2).exe, setup1010(3).exe, setup1010(4).exe, setup1010(5).exe and yet none of them work...really starting to think that fiefox does not work w/my computer and or e-sword

Hi Bobby V :)

The (1), (2,)... etc means you have downloaded the same file a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th time.

What do you mean when you say the files are untouchable, invisible? Are you saying you cannot double-click the installer to install e-Sword, you might have something blocking the installer from running, firewall, av, or malware program...? You could try disabling any security software before running setup1010.exe.

Your OS may also be preventing certain file types from running, maybe even downloading, .exe files are common file types but, they're used for malware too so an OS can be setup to block unknown (unsafe) files from running.

Do you know how to check the md5sum of files, if so, this is what I'm getting:
Name: setup1010.exe
Size: 53,158,717 bytes
MD5: 1E01797B25E45ED135672CEB650540E9

If you get the right size, you should be good to go, atleast the download is complete!

#11526 Edit a finished .topx file...?

Posted by Mike_S on 07 August 2012 - 08:39 PM in e-Sword Modules / Resources

Is this possible?

The reason I ask is that there have been a few topx files in larger collections that have some annoying inconsistencies while selecting different sections from the ref library viewer, Luther's Table Talks from the collection is a good example.

I would like to fix them myself if possible rather than bother the resource maker?

Are you saying you downloaded e-sword or firefox?  In FIREFOX under the TOOLS - OPTIONS-GENERAL tab you'll see an OPTION under DOWNLOADS where you can specify WHERE to save your file to. Once you have that specified go to that location and run the e-sword exe file to install it.

Good tip!

If by chance there is no default download location and instead 'Always ask me where to save files' is ticked you can find your download (in Firefox) this way, Tools - Downloads, or Ctrl+J, when the download dialog pops up right-click the file and select 'Open Containing Folder', this should open the location of your file in Windows Explorer.

#11510 Zip Files

Posted by Mike_S on 07 August 2012 - 01:34 PM in e-Sword Questions & Answers

Hi Hank :)

You need a program to 'unzip' the file, a good free program is 7-Zip - http://www.7-zip.org/ - get the right version for your OS, the .exe if on Windows x86, .msi for an x64 OS. If you are not using Windows, what OS? An alternative might be a portable version or 7-Zip - http://portableapps..../7-zip_portable - you can run the exe file, point it to a location on your computer when you are asked where to extract the program C:\7ZipPortable, try it out, if you don't like it you can delete the folder - program removed.

You might not see the .zip part due to extensions being hidden on your system, search for the name of the file minus the .zip. You can 'Show' extensions for known file types in Windows Explorer from 'Tools - Folder Options - View (Hide extensions for known file types)'. Uncheck the box if checked.

You need to be in charge here, don't let your browser throw files where ever, you need to have a folder set aside for your downloads, then point your browser to this folder or have it by default download to this folder. An example - \MyDownloads. What browser are you using?

You want the contents of the zip file, the bible, commentary, topic, whatever it is you wanted to add to e-Sword. You need to extract the file(s) from the zip you downloaded. What version of e-Sword are you using, make sure the resource (bible, dictionary, ...) is compatible with your vesion of e-Sword.

If I can be overly simplistic, a zip file is like a ziploc baggy, you have something inside the baggy, crackers, carrots, cheerios, you wouldn't simply dump the contents of the baggy out on your floor, likewise, you wont simply extract the contents of the zip file anywhere. If you have e-Sword 10, take a look at the user guide, with e-Sword running, F1 on the keyboard or Help - Contents while in e-Sword, see page 55.

If you have anymore questions please ask away, someone here will help you get this sorted out :)

#10968 E-Sword Between 2 Computers

Posted by Mike_S on 15 July 2012 - 10:35 PM in e-Sword Questions & Answers

This is a very good question, one I had early on, I didn't want to re-download resources I already had if they hadn't been updated after I reinstalled e-Sword, so yes, you can transfer the resources from one to the other - make sure saved resources will work on your e-Sword version if it's one you've had for a while.

Read the guide (Help or F1) if you're unsure, simply copy the resource from the given \folder in e-Sword to your thumb drive, to be safe you might take notes where the resource goes on the second machine - the same location it came from on the source machine.

You could also save the original resources(s), the .zip or .exe files from BibleSupport.com, or if you added resources from within e-Sword using the downloader you could save those as well by copying out the new Bible, Commentary, Dictionary, etc, then run the installers on the second machine, you have options - run the installer, extract the zip, or drop the raw resource (.bblx) in the proper folder.

If bandwidth isn't an issue you may redownload I suppose, for me, my connection is so slow a 30MB Bible I will save until it no longer works on my version of e-Sword. So, I have copies and store em with my e-Sword installer, after a reinstall I simply extract the resource to the appropriate \folder, or if I should install e-Sword on a friends machine, I take e-Sword and all my resources and give them everything I have.

HTH,

Mike

If the installer did it's job, you should have a .bblx file in your e-Sword root folder, the exact Bible name of Bullinger not sure. You may need to select the Bible if it didn't get pre-selected...

Go to Options - Resource, make sure the Bullinger Bible is available, if so put a check next to it, click OK.

If for some reason it's not in your e-Sword root folder provide details of what exactly you downloaded (link), and on your system - e-Sword xx.xx on Windows XP, 7, Linux etc. There are a few versions of e-Sword available now and a multitude of addons, your addons need to be compatible with your version of e-Sword. if your download doesn't specify an e-Sword version you may want to ask first to confirm it will work.

Oh, don't forget to make good use of the available guide in e-Sword 10 - with e-Sword open click Help or F1.
