A REVIEW

OF

REV. J. B. JETER’S BOOK

ENTITLED

“CAMPBELLISM EXAMINED.”

BY

MOSES E. LARD,

WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY ALEXANDER CAMPBELL

About the Book:

in the 1850s, Jeremiah Jeter (a Baptist) wrote a short, one-chapter book entitled, Campbellism Examined which can be downloaded in e-Sword format here. By 1855, he had expanded it to 395 pages (pdf of the full book can be downloaded here). These writings dealt with the beliefs and doctrines of those who sought to be called "Christians," "Disciples of Christ" or simply the "church of Christ." Opponents of this movement began to call them "Campbellites," after Alexander Campbell, one of their foremost preachers, writers, and debaters. Historically speaking, this movement was in full swing decades before Alexander Campbell or his father ever came to the United States, so the name "Campbellite" is historically inaccurate regardless of any other facts that may be considered.

In 1857, Moses E. Lard (whose commentary on Romans has been in print for over a century) wrote a response to Mr. Jeter's book. In it, he answers the charges made, shows the Scriptures from which the beliefs and doctrines come from, and clarifies the beliefs of these Christians to avoid any misrepresentation. In addition, he questions, with Scriptures, some of the doctrines held by Mr. Jeter that were expressed in the aforementioned book.

  • Reasons for the Present Work; Biography; the Title of Mr. Jeter's Book; Sects; Clergy; etc.
