Author Note
James Smith (1802—1862) was a predecessor of Charles Spurgeon at New Park Street Chapel in London from 1841 until 1850. Early on, Smith's readings were even more popular than Spurgeon's!
My object is to lead the mind . . .
from SELF — to Jesus;
from sin — to salvation;
from the troubles of life — to the comforts of the gospel.
My aim is . . .
to humble the sinner — and exalt the Savior;
to strip the creature — and place the crown on the head of God's free grace!
I cannot ascribe too much to Jesus — or too little to man!
Summary
Choice Sermons by James Smith is a collection of spiritually enriching and morally instructive sermons aimed at guiding believers towards a deeper understanding of Christian doctrine, personal holiness, and practical piety. Volume 7 continues this tradition, offering a series of sermons that address vital aspects of the Christian life, emphasizing personal salvation, the importance of faith, and the necessity of living a life that reflects Christ’s teachings.
The central theme of this volume revolves around the transformative power of the Gospel and the importance of individual responsibility in the pursuit of holiness. Smith’s sermons are characterized by their clear, straightforward language, aiming to reach both the educated and the common believer, urging them to examine their hearts and align their lives with biblical principles.
One of the prominent sermons in this volume focuses on the concept of repentance and faith. Smith underscores that true repentance involves a heartfelt sorrow for sin and a sincere turning away from it. He emphasizes that faith is not merely an intellectual assent but a trusting reliance on Christ’s finished work on the cross. For Smith, salvation is entirely dependent on God's grace, and human effort plays no role in earning divine favor. The sermon calls believers to examine whether their faith is genuine and rooted in Christ, warning against superficial conversions that lack true repentance and commitment.
Another significant sermon discusses the necessity of personal holiness. Smith advocates that genuine Christianity results in a transformed life, marked by moral purity, love, and humility. He warns against superficial religion that merely outwardly conforms to religious practices but fails to change the heart. The sermon highlights that holiness is not optional but essential for those claiming to follow Christ, urging believers to pursue sanctification actively through prayer, Bible study, and obedience.
In his sermons, Smith also addresses the danger of worldliness and spiritual complacency. He warns that the cares and allurements of worldly pursuits can distract believers from their spiritual duties. Smith encourages believers to set their affections on heavenly things rather than earthly riches or pleasures. He advocates for a life of constant vigilance and spiritual discipline, emphasizing that the Christian life is a continual race requiring perseverance and reliance on divine grace.
A recurring theme throughout the volume is the certainty of salvation for true believers. Smith reassures believers that those who are truly in Christ have a secure hope of eternal life. He emphasizes that salvation is a gift of God's grace, received through faith, and not based on human merit. This assurance is meant to comfort believers and motivate them to live holy lives out of gratitude for God's mercy.
Smith also discusses the importance of Christian humility and the need to avoid spiritual pride. He warns against self-righteousness and encourages believers to remember their dependence on divine grace. Humility, he asserts, is a vital mark of true Christianity and helps maintain a proper perspective before God.
Throughout the sermons, Smith emphasizes the importance of personal sanctification and the ongoing process of spiritual growth. He advocates for a life of prayer, meditation on Scripture, and active service to others as means of fostering spiritual maturity. His tone is pastoral, compassionate, and urgent, calling believers to examine their lives and pursue a deeper, more authentic faith.
In conclusion, Volume 7 of Choice Sermons by James Smith is a compelling collection that challenges believers to reflect on their spiritual state, pursue holiness, and trust entirely in Christ for salvation. It aims to bolster faith, encourage moral living, and deepen the believer’s relationship with God. Smith’s sermons remain relevant, exhorting believers to live out their faith actively and sincerely, with a heartfelt devotion to Christ and a commitment to personal sanctification.
