Author Note

James Smith (1802—1862) was a predecessor of Charles Spurgeon at New Park Street Chapel in London from 1841 until 1850. Early on, Smith's readings were even more popular than Spurgeon's!

My object is to lead the mind . . .
from SELF — to Jesus;
from sin — to salvation;
from the troubles of life — to the comforts of the gospel.

My aim is . . .
to humble the sinner — and exalt the Savior;
to strip the creature — and place the crown on the head of God's free grace!
I cannot ascribe too much to Jesus — or too little to man!

Summary

"Refreshment for the Savior’s Flock at Eventide" by James Smith is a collection of heartfelt devotional writings and sermons aimed at encouraging believers to find spiritual nourishment and comfort in their faith, especially during times of spiritual fatigue or trial. Published in the 19th century, the work reflects Smith’s deep pastoral concern for the spiritual well-being of Christians, emphasizing the necessity of reliance on Christ for sustenance and strength.

James Smith, a prominent preacher and theologian of his time, wrote this compilation to serve as a spiritual resource for believers who are nearing the end of their earthly journey—symbolized by the phrase "at Eventide," which refers to the evening or the closing stages of life. The overarching theme of the book is that even in life's later years or during periods of spiritual decline, believers can find refreshment, comfort, and renewed vigor through their faith in Jesus Christ.

The book opens with an acknowledgment of life's transient nature and the inevitable approach of life's "evening" for all believers. Smith encourages readers to view this phase not as a time of despair but as an opportunity for spiritual refreshment. He underscores the importance of maintaining a close relationship with Christ, who is portrayed as the true source of comfort and strength. Smith reminds believers that Christ’s love and grace are sufficient to sustain them through every trial and to prepare them for eternity.

Throughout the work, Smith emphasizes the importance of prayer, meditation on Scripture, and active faith as means to find refreshment. He advocates for a humble dependence on Christ, urging believers to cast their burdens upon Him and to seek His aid at all times. Smith also tackles the theme of spiritual weariness, encouraging believers to look to Christ as their "refreshment"—a divine sustenance that renews the soul and restores hope.

A significant portion of the book is dedicated to practical exhortations for maintaining spiritual vitality. Smith encourages believers to meditate on the promises of Scripture, to cherish the hope of heaven, and to find joy in the Savior's love. He also emphasizes the importance of fellowship with other believers, viewing the church community as a means of mutual encouragement and spiritual refreshment.

The tone of the writings is tender and pastoral, reflecting Smith’s deep compassion and pastoral concern. He encourages believers to view their earthly journey as a temporary sojourn, with their ultimate refreshment and rest found in Christ. His messages are imbued with comfort, urging believers to remain steadfast and to find solace in the Lord’s presence—especially as they approach life’s evening hours.

In conclusion, "Refreshment for the Savior’s Flock at Eventide" serves as a spiritual guide for Christians seeking comfort and renewed strength in their faith during life's later stages. Smith’s writings remind believers that Christ remains their everlasting refuge and that, even in the evening of life, they can find divine refreshment, hope, and assurance of eternal life. The work encourages a life of trust, prayer, and meditation, fostering a peaceful confidence in the Savior’s loving care until the final rest in eternity.
