#57991 Help! My Bible extended search doesn't work!
Posted by olafba1
on 05 June 2026 - 12:39 AM
If you experience a problem with searching for words in Bibles, such as when using the Bible, Extended Search... option on a range of selected Bibles or using the Bible, Bible Compare Settings... on a specified range of Bibles, the problem may be that you have a Bible in the list that is not coded in HTML type formatting.
Try the following:
Select one Bible such as the KJV and verify that the Extended search or Compare option finds the entry. Then add an additional Bible to the list, testing each time. When a problem Bible is added to the list, then check whether there is a more recent entry which you can use to replace the entry that you have in the computer in the Resources Location, which by default is located for e-Sword for the PC in the folder at C:\Program Files (x86)\e-Sword
Where to search for updated Bibles:
In e-Sword select "Download", "Bibles", then browse to the language and look for the appropriate Name of the Bible, and the latest copyright dates. There may be a more recent version available. If this uses the same "Tab" name as the one already in your PC, the date will probably be indicated in RED.
In Bible Support search for the name of the Bible in the TOPICS option, and also in the DOWNLOAD option. An earlier Bible loaded with the file extension "bblx" may have a more recent entry available with the file extension "bbli" to provide for use by e-Sword for Android, e-Sword X for the Mac, e-Sword HD for the iPad, and e-Sword LT for the iPhone, and which will now work for e-Sword for the PC also. If that is available, use the e-Sword Options, Resource Settings... and browse to the old file, select the entry name with a LEFT click of the mouse, then follow up with a RIGHT click of the mouse to access the option to "Delete Resource Permanently", then continue to follow the further instructions displayed on the screen. Then download the replacement Bible module into your PC. Close e-Sword. Then restart e-Sword and repeat the test with the replacement Bible.
The regular method that Rick Meyers used in July 2025 to test the entries for the required words, was with the search for the standard ANSI characters.
Maybe you can test it against different alphabets and come up with a better expression.

#50016 Widening the left column for more letters in Bible book title

Flyboyy,
I suggest that you let us know which variety of e-Sword you are running. If you are running from a PC or laptop on a Windows operating system, I suggest that you will find that the e-Sword Developer, Rick Meyers, from e-Sword version 14.5.0, allows you to drag the e-Sword screen wider, to the left, and that when you do so, you will be able to read the names of the books of the Bible more easily.
There is still a problem when a person is using a lookup Scripture Reference option, where the text of the name of the books is listed and is right aligned, such as a user who reads the names of books and wants to select a chapter, with the "Options", "App Language", selected from a language such as Arabic, and the width of the chapter and verses are sometimes narrow and also right aligned, instead of the contents in the chapter number and verse number columns being left aligned for all languages. This is something for the e-Sword developers to work on for a later update. This may have been overlooked in the past, because it is likely that Rick Meyers was not developing his e-Sword options on a PC running Microsoft Windows 11, but was still using a PC running on an earlier variety of Microsoft operating systems.
I hope the e-Sword developers and their property and equipment survived the weather problems that have devastated areas of Tennessee during the last few months.
From the "Help" option you have a direct link to report the problem, and give your setup please, to the e-Sword developers on the option "Help", "Technical Support". That option takes you direct to the https://www.e-sword.net/feedback.html option. Detail exactly which option you used, and in which order you selected the options with which you are experiencing reading problems.
Also. I suggest that you have a look at the "Options", "Font Settings", and the Font Sizes you have set your device to use at present when displaying the e-Sword screens and their contents.
#49948 Bible books menu is broken when switching to arabic

Let us begin and select "Options" > "Language" > "English", and instead of using the "Show All Windows (Ctrl+F1), we will use the "Bible Maximized (Ctrl+F2) option. Now select the Bible "Arabic SVD". Now let us select something to view. Select the icon (Lookup Scripture Reference (F2) and you will see Chapter numbers listed in numerical order, and Verse numbers listed in numerical order. These numbers have been left aligned. If you select a book of the Bible, listed in the KJV order, which is then highlighted, and select a chapter number, which is then highlighted, and select a verse number, which is then highlighted, then the relevant content of the chapter and verse will be opened on the wide screen. The chapter and verse number will be highlighted. There is a slider along the right edge, which you can slide up and down.
The books of the Bible of the KJV Apocrypha or the Roman Catholic Deuterocanonical Books have been filtered out of the books in the Bibles printed by some publishers.
If you had used "Options" > "Display Settings" > "Bible Pericope", and toggled the option from OFF (with an open check box) to the option ON (with a tick in the check box), then the bibles will display topic headings inside the chapters. These pericope headings have been made for display when the selection Language is either English, Spanish (Español), French (Français), or Portuguese (Português).
If we select Display Settings Language = English, or Language = Greek, the chapter and verse numbering on the Lookup Scripture References will be left aligned, so the single-digit numbers in the range 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and the 2-digit numbers, and the 3-digit chapter numbers in the book of Psalms are visible. The Arabic SVD Bible had those single-digit chapter and verse numbers right aligned. The column was narrow, but the positions were still there and could be selected.
To see the chapters and verse numbers left aligned, select Options, Display Settings Language = English, or Greek. Then you can see the chapters and verses from the icon "Lookup Scripture Reference (F2)". If the width of the column that displays the name of the book is too narrow, in the "Show All Windows (Ctrl+F1)" option, then use the icon "Lookup Scripture Reference (F2)" which will have a wider column. Then switch back to the Bible Books display. The option to drag the column width of the book name, or chapter list column, or verse list column, wider has not been provided for up to e-Sword version 14.5.0.
This problem can then be brought to the attention of Rick Meyers, to ensure that when the user switches the display between the Bible Books Name, chapter, and verse columns, and switches to the display of the Lookup Scripture reference (F2) option, and switch back to the Bible Book Name option, that the width of the columns is not made too narrow, and that the push pins for the option of Bible Books, the push pin option of Chapter list column, and the push pin option for the Verse list column, will remain visible, and the push pin for the columns still available to be retrieved from the tab margin, when the Bible Books list is re-selected, and when the selection is for the Display Settings Language = "Arabic" instead of Language = "English". This is probably a selection option that had not received sufficient attention previously when the list of languages was extended. Some language (like Arabic) display numbers right aligned, and some languages (like English and Greek) display the chapter and verse numbers left aligned. The option to pull the width of the columns wider could also be considered.

Look in the "Esword" "Download" option. AFTER ENGLISH, Free, and Premium, there are entries for English, Anglicized, and then English, Old where you will find the Geneva and Bishops and KJV-1611 Bibles. These are with the books of the Apocrypha.

The GTH translation by Garth is from the Greek New Testament only, into English words. It loads okay into e-Sword version 14.5.0 in both Windows 10 and in Windows 11.
#49210 e-Sword Editor changes v14.5.0
Posted by olafba1
on 23 November 2025 - 08:19 PM
This is a summary of how e-Sword Editor options have changed in version 14.5.0
HINT. When you download e-Sword to a new PC or laptop, check very carefully under which user name, and exactly where, the User Files Location is created, so that you are aware how these files may be located differently to what you had expected.
Is it in the folder: c:\users\administrator\documents\e-sword\
Or is it in the folder named, for example, where "olaf" is the username, at c:\users\olaf\onedrive\documents\e-sword\
In this second option, if the internet access to "onedrive" is not available, then your e-sword might not work as you expected it to work.
Where do you see this? Select the e-sword tab, "Options" > "Resource Settings..." > then in any of the headings, "Bibles", "Commentaries", "Dictionaries", "Devotions", "Graphics", or "Reference Books" look at the combo-boxes in the lower section of the pop-up page, in the User Files Location address. Then, remember that you need to re-download all the files that you need, to the "Resources Location" and to the "User Files Location".
If you try to use TAB to space your output, this no longer works because HTML does NOT have this facility. Please search the internet for the following, to discover how Word, for example, mimics the effects. This is not a problem for e-Sword to resolve. I suggest that you convert your tab positions by providing your output in a table format.

#47371 Navigate between chapters?
Posted by olafba1

Grantha, When we read the Holy Scriptures, Old Testament and New Testament, we find that there are often two different ways of approach to the truths that God reveals. One key to be able to understand the meaning of the text correctly, is to be prepared to Believe that what God says, is accurate, and is to be obeyed exactly.
In many different ways, the history of what occurred on this planet has been written up, to teach us by example, from the experiences of people in the past. This begins with Eve, deceived by the serpent, to deliberately eat of the tree of which none of the humans were to eat. But it was necessary for them to choose NOT to eat, because they loved God, and were to decide that they would always obey God's commandments.
In the illustrations provided, we see the results if what happened when someone OBEYED God. Usually there will also be an illustration of what results when someone decided to be their own "God" and decided to do the OPPOSITE of what God had instructed. Disobedience is called "sin". The result of sin was that Eve and Adam immediately began to die. The curse of that disobedience then spread out and affected the animals, and plants, of Earth as well.
When God became born on Earth as a human, he was known as "Jesus", and he demonstrated, during his life, that it is entirely possible to love God so much, that he never needed to disobey what God teaches us to do. Jesus was examined in many courts of law. They all found Jesus to be WITHOUT SIN.
Sin is defined in 1 John 3:4
Now, there are different sources of "law". In the New Testament Jesus said that there were leaders who rejected God's law, in order to implement their own traditions.
Here is Paul's testimony about his previous adherence to the oral laws, the laws that are NOT in the Bible, written in the added book of the discussions of the sages. That study produced the religion known as Judaism. There is a whole series of these non-Biblical beliefs, known as "The Code of Jewish Law", compiled by Solomon Ganzfried, translated by Hyman E. Goldin. New York Hebrew Publishing Company, 1993.
How do we differentiate between God's laws, as they were explained and set to a higher level by Jesus (in his talk to his disciples on a mountain, recorded in Matthew chapters 5, 6, and 7), versus the laws based on traditions and the sayings of their ancestors. To differentiate between the two sets of "the law", Paul added the demonstrative pronoun, which in English is "the", in the phrase "the law", whenever he was referring to God's Law. In other phrases, where the English has "the law", we should X-out the word "the". I have made a list, based on the NIV (2011) of "X law", where you can use a pencil and X out the word "the" in necessary places, to make the English conform to the meaning of Paul's writings in Koiné Greek, from Romans to Philippians. The same list will apply in all your Bibles, including the KJV. Then when you read the text, the difference between the two different sources will become much easier to understand.
Please download ad read these documents. They can be read okay with a recent internet browser.
I think that understanding the source of God's law, in opposition to any other kinds of laws, will help you when you and your granddaughters are reading the Bible.
Believe God tells us the truth. Then find a way to implement God instructions in our way of life.
#47285 Septuagint bible

Thank you, APsit190, for providing alternative information to explain what the word "Septuagint" refers to.
Because you understand the inner working of Bible Support, you know that it is IMPOSSIBLE to search Bible Support on just three alphabetic letters, such as "LXX". You also had "insider" knowledge, that enables you to read and understand the Preface and the Introduction pages of your New Zealand Bible in English.
You know LXX is a code word used by Bible translators to refer to the Latin numeral 70, where L = 50, and XX = 20, and together, 50+20=70. Here again, we CANNOT search on two-letter codes. The word Septuagint is the Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) and was used by the early Church. The Septuagint is also called the translation of the seventy because tradition states that the Septuagint was translated by seventy scholars. In academia, the Septuagint is often abbreviated as LXX (the Roman numeral for seventy) in honor of this tradition. Some people do not even know about the website: https://www.septuagint.bible/ which is a joint project between the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and the Hellenic Bible Society.
Here you can find THE SEPTUAGINT: LXX. THE GREEK TRANSLATION OF THE HEBREW SCRUPTURES. The text in Greek is provided on-line, book for book, and chapter by chapter.
So, thanks for providing useful additional information that someone could USE.
To add to what Higgsy said, you can also download a Greek (LXX) Bible from within e-Sword, using the Download Manager.
In e-Sword:
- Click on Download on the Menu bar.
- In the Download menu click on Bibles
- Scroll down to "Greek," in the Bibles' Tab Page, and then click on either:
- Greek OT and/or
- Greek OT+ which includes the Strong's numbers.
Trust you find this helpful.
Blessings,
Stephen (Php 1:21).
Thanks for your help.
