Strong Dictionary: How to add 3751 new entries?

03 October 2020 - 05:46 AM

Dear all,

In 1890 James Strong published his Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible. He has done a tremendous work putting all the Greek words of the New Testament in our hands. He also considered the Hebrew Old Testament. This was in the 19th century. Today, in the 21st century, we are all happy to use the Strong numbers.

But, if you consider the Greek Old Testament, the Septuagint (LXX), you will rapidly find out that there are many Greek words which have no Strong number. Is that possible? Why? Simply because they are not present in the Net Testament, and consequently there is no Strong number for them.

By the grace of God, this vacuum was filled by Charles VanderPool, who after working for more than 20 years, published in 2003, the Apostolic Bible Polyglot (ABP). The ABP is an English translation with a

Greek interlinear gloss and is keyed to a concordance. The numbering system is a modified version of Strong’s concordance, which was designed only to handle the traditional Hebrew Masoretic Text of the Old Testament, and the Greek text of the New Testament. Strong's concordance doesn't have a numbering for the Greek O.T. The ABP utilizes a Greek Septuagint base for the O.T. and, therefore, required an extended system. For more detail see https://apostolicbible.com/

Charles VanderPool added 3751 new Strong numbers. And there are 5624 "classical" Strong numbers.

Charles VanderPool granted me the permission to work on the new ABP-Strong numbers, and I would like to start a project to add all the new entries to the Strong dictionary available in MySword.

I use MyBible and MySword on my Android devices, both having a ABP module. For now, MySword  is just perfect for ABP, as it properly handles the three-lined interlinear: the 1st line for the Greek text,  the 2nd line for the corresponding Strong numbers, and the 3rd line for the English translation. You can have a look at the attached MySword screenshot, which is showing Genesis 1:2 in ABP; you can see there the Greek word "αόρατος" (unseen) with "classical" Strong number G517, while the next Greek word "ακατασκεύαστος "(unready) has the "new" Strong number G180.2.

The only issue is with the 3751 new ABP-Strong numbers, as they are missing from the embedded Strong dictionary.

I saw that in MySword, the Strong dictionary is stored in the file “strong_lite.dct.mybible”.

Could someone explain please how to add new entries to the Strong dictionary embedded in MySword?

The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest. - Mat 9:37b-38

Thank you all

God bless
