File Name: Simeon, Charles - Horae Homileticae Commentary  (21 volumes)

File Submitter: Josh Bond

File Submitted: 07 May 2012

File Category: Commentaries

Author: Charles Simeon
e-Sword Version: 9.x - 10.x

This isn’t just an expositional commentary, it’s a teaching tool with 21 volumes and 40 megabytes of text. It’s a goldmine for experienced preachers, but it’s also an excellent aid for inexperienced preachers who might still need someone to walk them through a biblical text and help them expound upon it.

Charles Simeon was one of the most prominent evangelical clergymen in the Church of England in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. He was known both for his passion for mission and his extraordinary biblical preaching. But when Simeon looked at the clergy around him he saw men who were often unable to preach well. They either preached poor sermons or they parroted the sermons published by others. Simeon’s passion for preaching drove him to collect and publish his own sermons, preached from Genesis to Revelation and spanning fifty-four years of ministry.

But he didn’t simply publish manuscripts or transcripts of his sermons. Simeon wanted a tool that would both encourage good preaching and that would train good preachers by giving them the skills they needed. To that end, Simeon published what he calls “skeletons” rather than full sermon texts. He begins by laying out the main points or divisions of the biblical text, which he then shows the preacher how to flesh out and expand. He includes copious biblical cross-references as well as excellent aids to practical application. His method is best seen in his use of three dashes (“— — —”) found throughout the text. This is Simeon’s way of saying, “I’ve walked you through the text, I’ve pointed you in the right direction, now you flesh it out in your own words.”

About the e-Sword Edition:
The e-Sword edition includes the primary commentary file and 2 supporting Reference Library files (Subject and Lectionary Index and John Claude's revised essay on sermon composition).

Volumes I and XXI of the printed edition are of special note. The first volume contains Simeon’s introductory essay, which is often quoted and referred to in other books on preaching. In e-Sword, select this commentary and click Commentary > Information to view the introductory essay. While it’s short, it’s also inspiring, explains Simeon’s homiletic rationale, and serves as a sort of “user’s guide” to the whole series.

The final volume includes copious indexes, including Subject and Liturgical/Lectionary indexes, as well as Simeon’s “improved” version of Jean Claude’s excellent essay on sermon composition. Simeon even includes several of his own skeletons to illustrate Claude’s instructions. See the files: Simeon, Charles - Subject, Liturgical, Lectionary Indexes.topx and Simeon, Charles and Claude, John - Claude's Essay on the Composition of a Sermon.topx.

The Subject and Lectionary usage is demonstrated below:

Reviews:
I have loved Charles Simeon's 'Expository Outlines' since I began to prapare sermons in my studies for the gospel ministry. As soon as I could, I acquired a set and I have consulted them almost weekly for over thirty years. Simeon is always suggestive and practical, whatever the passage. He opens up the text and applies it. He never wanders off the track down the rabbit trails of story-telling or speculation. Christ is always the center of his thought and the destination of his discourses. His outlines can still show young preachers the way to sound proclamation of Bible truth and Gospel grace. It would be wonderful to see these once more available to the Christian public." -Gordon Keddie, Pastor and Author

"[Horae Homileticae] is the best place to go for researching Simeon's theology. You can find his views on almost every key text in the Bible. What Simeon experienced in the word was remarkable. And it is so utterly different from the counsel that we receive today that it is worth looking at." - Dr. John Piper

"If you have the money to do this project, and enough orders to warrant it, I think it would be a monumental achievement for you, and a wonderful gift to the church!" - Dr. Don Kistler

These expository outlines (or 'skeletons') are not a verse-by-verse explanation of the English Bible. Rather, they are a chapter-by-chapter study with explanations of the most important and instructive verses in each chapter. Simeon's aim with this commentary is 'Instruction relative to the Composition of Sermons.' To this end, his exposition of the Scriptures is designed to maintain a focus on the more general aspects of a passage over and above possible treatments of particulars. His test for a sermon, as he teaches in Horae Homileticae, is threefold: does it humble the sinner, exalt the Saviour and promote holiness?

"If Wilberforce is the most famous evangelical layman in the Church of England, then Simeon is the most famous evangelical clergyman." - Who's Who in Christian History by Warren Wiersbe

"[Simeon's] authority and influence extended from Cambridge to the most remote corners of England, his real sway in the Church was far greater than that of any primate." -Thomas Macaulay

"This series represents the best time-tested works in homiletic and exegetical literature covering all 66 books of the Bible. In this set some of the greatest preachers contributed to the Sermon Outlines, including: … G C Morgan, Alexander MacLaren, C H Spurgeon, H P Liddon, Henry Alford etc. The work contains almost 5,000 sermon outlines …. Conservative in Theology, skillful in condensation, discriminating in the choice of texts …. Many thought-provoking sermon suggestions ….. Seldom seen studies from many of the Preaching Giants of the past. .... After each entry (verse expounded upon) it gives credit to the source (author or work quoted), as well as valuable references to other notable works worth consulting. This series was first published by Hodder and Stoughton under the Title “The Sermon Bible” under the editorial supervisory of W Robertson Nicoll."

"In the following pages it is attempted to give the essence of the best of homiletic literature of this generation. As the series is to be completed in twelve volumes, proportion has been very carefully studied, and the space allotted to each book corresponds to the number of sermons preached upon it. No pains have been spared to secure accuracy and completeness, and it is confidently hoped that the volumes will form an indispensable part of the preacher's library.

This set contains 4800 sermon outlines and 24,000 homiletic references arranged canonically from Genesis to Revelation. These thought-provoking sermon suggestions are rich in ideas and abundant in material for successful sermons.

This set will be a blessing to preachers and their hearers and will prevent shallow and repetitious preaching upon the part of those who must address the same audience week after week and year after year. These volumes will prove to be a rich treasure house for those who desire to remain Scriptural and practical in their preaching."

#4280 Using Microsoft Word to Make Modules

Posted by SpreadTheWord on 04 December 2011 - 09:33 AM

If you've ever tried making an e-Sword module, you know what a time consuming task this can be. Today I want so share with you a huge shortcut you can use when you have clean, consistently formatted text. I need to get into the habit of sharing more information like this (it just takes time to make screenshots and write the article).

Game changingly powerful for me. I'll be asking you some followup questions today I imagine.

The Princeton Theological Review 3:483-487. [1905]
St. Paul’s Conception of the Last Things
H.A.A. Kennedy

In choosing for the subject of his Cunningham Lectures “St. Paul’s Conceptions of the Last Things,” the author of this work has endeavored to supply a real need. Even in German theological literature, where monographs on the various aspects of Pauline teaching are most abundant, it can hardly be said that a satisfactory discussion of the topic exists. Kabisch’s book is too one-sidedly physical in its interpretation of the apostle’s fundamental conceptions, and the smaller treatise of Teichmann, besides confining itself to the Resurrection and the Judgment, is too much dominated by the idea of development in St. Paul’s eschatological thought to give a fair presentation of the facts.

In English, the book of Charles, taking in the whole field of Old and New Testament eschatology, by reason of its comprehensiveness, offers no more than a brief and sketchy outline of the apostle’s positions. But Dr. Kennedy not only has prepared a timely book, he has also prepared what may, on the whole, be called a good book. We do not mean by this that there are not in his discussion several points, some of them important, in regard to which we feel bound to differ from the conclusions reached. To some extent even the basis on which the discussion is carried on evokes dissent. We are made to feel that the author does not share our belief in the inspiration of the apostle to the extent of regarding him an infallible teacher. Thus we are told that “the inspiration of the apostle is an equipment of the Spirit for the work he has immediately to do,” and in the same connection that “one of the fundamental truths of God’s operation in history is a gradual change in the mental perspective of nations and individuals” (pp. 27-28). We are asked to admit “the possibility of very considerable variation as to details in the apostle’s conceptions at different times, for the simple reason that neither in Judaism nor in primitive Christian circles does there seem to have been any rigid eschatological system” (p.163).

On the other hand, while holding this laxer view of inspiration in the abstract, and professing readiness, if need be, to draw, or at least not a priori to reject, its consequences, the author, it must be said to his credit, makes a very restrained and discreet use of the liberty he thus vindicates for himself. He does not delight, as so many modern writers do, in involving the apostle in the greatest possible number of inconsistencies. In most cases he finds that the contradictions do not in reality exist. Illustrative of this attitude is his manner of dealing with the assertion that the doctrine of universal judgment was simply a portion of the popular religious consciousness of the time which the apostle had retained, without endeavoring to adjust it to his profounder and more spiritual conceptions. First, we are reminded that “this is a supposition which even the soberest and most restrained Christian thought ought not to reject a priori,” because “the very highest endowment of a human soul with the Divine Spirit can never turn the consciousness into an isolated automaton.”
We are almost immediately reassured, however, on learning that “in St. Paul’s case, as in that of all the New Testament writers, we must be content to form our estimate of his conceptions solely from the evidence which we possess” (p.277). The only instance where the danger of the toned-down theory of inspiration shows itself in concrete form is found in the remarks of p. 280, to the effect that the imprisonment epistles represent a vaguer and more simplified outlook into the future than the earlier epistles, an outlook summed up in the simple term elpij. It is suggested that Paul, “as he sought to fathom the treasures of wisdom and knowledge which were hidden in Christ, felt less confidence even in the prophetic forecasts which had been a stable element in his eschatological thought. Perhaps he grew more and more to distrust the use of earthly imagery and pictures drawn from human experience to body forth the circumstances of a life belonging to another order.” When on the basis of this the question is put, “Will not the Christian Church act wisely in following the example of her great spiritual teacher?” we cannot help feeling that the injunction must fail to move the reader, because the example of a teacher who loses confidence in his own previous teaching is apt to lose its constraining power.

The author nowhere makes an explicit avowal of his attitude with reference to the genuineness of the epistles. It appears, however, that he recognizes not merely the imprisonment epistles but also 2 Thessalonians as genuine. Only the data from the pastoral epistles are conspicuously absent from his discussion. This might seem to indicate that there was doubt in his mind if not as to the genuineness of these documents, at least as to the advisability of introducing their statements as Pauline in the present state of the controversy. The latter objection, however, would seem to bear equally much against the inclusion of 2 Thessalonians in the sphere of investigation.

#2692 New Chat and Other Features

A few ideas. Consider a "report conversation" option so that someone can report an inappropriate chat. Not sure if thats easy to do.

Now that you have a bar at the bottom of the screen, might as well use the real estate? The middle section of the bar could be used? You could add a link to your e-Sword manual. Maybe a link to "How to install e-Sword modules". Maybe a link to "What is esword" or "How do i view modules on this site". Or maybe links to the most popular areas of the site? Just throwing out some ideas...

#2175 An e-Sword Magazine, what do you think?

Under your view, dos for dummies would be illegal if Microsoft didnt approve. Gmat and Lsat prep courses would be illegal since the author does not own the rihgts to the placement tests. A technical magazine could not write a bad review of a iphone if apple did not approve. New York times could not write a bad review of a restaurant if the restaurant didnt approve. Video professor would be illegal without every software makers permission. A photoshop blog would be illegal without Adobes consent. All blogs, magazines, books that talk about a product, service, person, or real estate would be illegal if the owner did not approve. Thats just silly and if it were true first amendment wouldnt mean anything. Trademarks give marketing control and copyrights give distribution control...but neither give media control.

The owner of the Dummies books could write esword for dummies tomorrow without anyones approval and there is no legal way to stop them. I feel you try to control the esword community with legalistic "cant do's" and you attempt to leave people with the impression that you somehow speak for esword. This needs to start being challenged like bh did on the tooltipping software / EULA message posts. No disrespect intended in any way this is just my impression after reading this message board.

p.s. Many companies have won lawsuits about posting of their copyright source code...won piracy claims that the text was just a invitation to offer/link to pirated downloads...won claims when someone wrote words they knew were not true at the time they wrote them... won default judgments where the other side did not reply...won cases where whole copyrighted publications were quoted without approval. Microsoft has not won on the only basis that it did not approve material before publication by an unconnected, uncontracted third party without another law violation like libel, malicious intent, publishing copyrighted material, confusion on the origin of the work, etc or because someone violated a contract with microsoft.

A magazine about esword would not be trademark or copyright infringement anymore than a magazine about Microsoft Windows would be. Or a blog about Photoshop. Or a magazine about Macintosh. Or a blog about Photoshop. You cant control what books or magazines others write about your product (or real estate or service, etc) unless the content is libelous, malicious, intended to harass, confusion on the content's origin (ex: trademark), etc.

Logos was just one out of a million examples i could use. It doesn't matter if they are concerned or not, they cannot legally stop it anymore than Microsoft can stop a magazine about Windows.

I suspect that Rick will consider charging for a magazine about e-Sword, to be monetizing it.  Talk to him about it.

I know this is a non-issue here but just to avoid a myth like this from continuing. You would not need anyone's approval to start a commercial magazine for esword. Anyone is free to write a magazine (or run an advertisement supported website) about Macintosh, despite Apple owning the platform. Anyone can start a commercial magazine for Windows or Office without paying Microsoft. I could have began a company called Video Professor without needing Microsoft's approval. A third party seminary graduate runs a company that makes and sells unofficial Logos training materials without paying Logos (not talking about Mike Morris). I could list thousands of examples of printed or online material that profits from discussing property belong to others. It falls under freedom of speech. Trademarks and copyrights and patents are an exception to free speech, and they are very narrowly protected. Its hard to stop even commercial speech related to them. Somewhere in your work, you have to acknowledge the trademark(s) of others just as all the examples above do.
