#15297 How to download esword modules to iPad

Posted by xt600 on 14 January 2013 - 02:18 PM

There's another iPad app coming soon, one that is not made by e-Sword. But it will read e-Sword and theWord modules in RTF format (the way the PC versions do). It will be free, and it will allow for the easy integration of modules hosted on third party sites like this.

This will likely be the app we support on this site. (e-Sword for the PC, MySword for the droid, and [X] for the iPad). I don't have a timeline for when it will be here. Everything is subject to change, of course. But going a different iPad direction makes the most sense for us and it's the direction I've been pursuing.

Thanks Brother, you are the man!  Let us know when it is available.   God Bless!

I for one am disappointed that we do not have access to not even half of the vast library that is on the Bible Support site!  The iPad is the best invention since the Lap Top.

Unfortunately the Esword HD for iPad is no different than the dozen or so other Bible apps out there for the iPad, a few free books and option to pay for better ones.  Why no access to commentaries and dictionaries on Bible Support?   Too bad because it could have been different and #1 like it's Windows and Android counter part.  I regret that I paid to download it, because the other equal quality Bible apps are free!  Oh well, better than nothing.

I understand the concept of Apple monitoring the process and making it more difficult and I was not accusing Rick of being greedy.  There is nothing wrong with making money!  However what has made e-sword so famous is the free part IMO.  It has long been the very best free Bible app because of it's ease of use and hundreds of FREE commentaries, dictionaries, etc.  Now that it has arrived on the iPad it seems like it might differ from what made e-sword famous.  1. You have to pay for it (different but I am okay with that since it is only $5.00)  2.  Ease of use - yes it holds up here  3.  Hundreds of free commentaries and dictionaries, etc.  - FAIL   Now having said that, there has to be a way for those who have jail break to bypass Big Daddy Apple sandbox to install all the books that are free from Bible Support.  I do not have jailbreak on my iPad but would consider it if I could get more commentaries and foreign Bibles on my esword HD.

New e-Sword HD Version
The User Group update to e-Sword HD has been released.

The only material currently available in the new area is Ironside Reference Library material I converted yesterday. It looks like this area will be sorted alphabetically by title and not by author? That part is unclear since only one author's material is currently present.

Files I can Convert
I do not have the ability to convert commentaries or dictionaries--or any resource type other than topx/refx. So the conversion of our most popular commentaries and dictionaries is beyond my control--resources like Pulpit Commentary, Expositor's Bible, Maclaren's, etc (going down the top 20 downloads).

Also note: I cannot add files directly--I can only submit topx/refx to Rick and he decides whether to add them. This segways into the topic below.

Closed Nature of e-Sword HD
Rick is also against any information being distributed on this website about how to install your own modules on the iPad, or even release the database schema (layout) used by the e-Sword HD modules (this would be a good starting point for making your own modules). He says this will lead to people accidentally deleting or modifying files, if they copy modules themselves into the right folder. I personally disagree with the closed nature of HD, but I will honor his request--it's his program. I think this will hold back the success of the application long term. The openness of e-Sword for the PC is what made it so popular.

I realize this will not play well with many of you. Nevertheless, I appreciate your cooperation on not posting any dissection of e-Sword HD modules, how to make them, or how to install them.

I think he has seen the opportunity to make a lot of money because of the popularity of the iPad and therefore wants to keep control so people will be forced to buy the commentaries, etc. that are for sale.  Too bad as I have already given my $5.00 for the app.  I think in the long run he will actually lose money because the popularity will fall.  Imagine if TheWord Bible came up with a good iPad app with all it's material completely free?  Maybe another forum will start up somewhere that explains how to install the modules?  Oh well, it could be worse.  :-)  Actually if you want to pay Wordsearch for iPad has way more books available and even more free books, it is just not as easy an app to use.
