BONAR, HORATIUS (1808–1889)
Scottish minister and hymn writer

Educated at Edinburgh in arts and divinity, Bonar was ordained in 1837 on appointment as minister of the North Church, Kelso. His ministry there continued after he had joined the Free Church of Scotland at the Disruption of 1843, until he was called to Chalmers Memorial Church, Edinburgh, in 1866. Like his brother Andrew Bonar, he wrote a great deal, making significant contributions in the biographical field. He also edited several religious journals. As a hymn writer his name is known throughout the English–speaking world. Ira D. Sankey, musical associate of Dwight L. Moody, among others, acknowledged a debt of gratitude to him. Bonar published several volumes of hymns, many of which are still widely sung. They include “I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say” and “Here, O My Lord, I See Thee Face to Face.”
