Magento 2 or Shopify: Where to go as a Magento 1 store owner?
You've either already decided to move away from Magento 1 or are migrating from Shopify to Magento and wondering how difficult (and expensive) it will be.
Magento will discontinue support for the Magento 1 prelaunch version in June 2020. It may be a bitter pill, but it's time to switch. Since you can't avoid the migration anyway, you might wonder if you should switch platforms at the same time.
We understand how scary and confusing tackling this topic can be, so we aim to provide transparency by demystifying it in this article.
Why you need to replace Magento 1
Magento 1 "End-of-Life" sounds almost macabre, but it's true. Adobe is discontinuing support for future Magento 1.x updates and removing all Magento 1 extensions from the Magento Marketplace. From our point of view, there are two main reasons why you need to choose a new platform: security and performance.
Security
No support = no more security updates. Hackers have always targeted e-commerce sites because they go where the money is and know how vulnerable an unprotected system can be.
After June 2020, newly discovered bugs in Magento 1 will no longer be fixed, so you'll either have to look for a fix from a third-party vendor or risk losing customers (and money).
Performance
We compared the benefits of Magento 2 in our article Magento 1 vs Magento 2. Magento 1.x uses legacy architecture and technologies. After the deadline, Adobe only invested in new features for Magento 2, including innovations such as the multi-source inventory module, PWA Studio, Page Builder, etc.
