#25379 Saint Athanasius Academy Septuagint - SAAS Translation

Posted by Cam on 17 June 2015 - 10:40 PM

Saint Athanasius Academy Septuagint is an LXX translation found in the Orthodox Study Bible published in English in 2008.

The LXX transition is in modern English and the cost of the Bible is relatively low.

If you like quoting out of Brenton, CAB (Complete Apostle's Bible, or the ABP (Apostolic Bible Polyglot), then this one should be looked at as well.

I discovered by randomly purchasing this study Bible for reference a couple of years ago.  It is worth the notes and the translation of the Psalms alone!

I also like the the various inserts that explain Orthodox doctrine such as a good explanation of "partaking of the divine nature" from 2 Peter 1:4.

#25377 Hebrews 4:8

Yes. Paul and the writes of the New Testament saw that the entire Old Testament pictured and prophesied of Jesus through allegory and symbols (Gal. 4:24). Jesus also said this in a variety of ways such as saying He was the Door, or the Rock, or the Manna, etc. The Jewish leadership didn't want to believe for the most part. They were happy to just have correct doctrine and stick to their religion rather than come to Jesus for life (John 5:39-40). But Jesus came as the Substance of what the Old Testament pictured (Col. 2:17).

-

So for instance, you have correctly noted that Joshua and Hosea are the same name as Jesus. The book of Joshua could easily be called the book of Jesus as well as Hosea. The spiritual pictures hold - for both. The Holy Spirit can show them to you. I refer to these as "The Jesus Pictures": all and every Old Testament story shows some aspect of "Christ and Him crucified" (1 Cor. 2:2).

-

Example: I cite this in The Jesus Pictures - Daniel and the Lion's Den is a picture of the death, burial and resurrection. Once you accept that Gods foreordained history to paint pictures of Jesus' crucified Life offered to us in union with Him, then these come alive. In Daniel 6 the story deals with a "unchangeable law". That is like the law of sin and death - you sin, you die. There are some guys who want to get rid of a righteous man. So they set up circumstances so that they can get him entrapped. The successfully get him sentenced to death. Daniel goes into and hole in the earth that is covered over by a big rock that is sealed. Then while Daniel is in this "tomb", there is a lion prowling seeking to devour. But He can't devour this righteous one. Then next Daniel is raised up alive out through the same opening! The king is so impressed with what God has done, he then writes letters to tell all the nations about it.  I hope you recognize the death, burial, resurrection and great commission in the story.  All the O.T. stories are like this, but they only depict different aspects of the cross, specifically the "knowing of Christ and Him crucified".

The stories are not there just for curiosity, but to know Jesus in this way that He is portrayed.
