Every time Rick releases a new version of e-Sword, it contains several things that he doesn't mention.
I started this thread, to document things I notice, that I don't remember being in earlier versions of e-Sword.

">Help >User Group"
This links to BibleSupport.com.
This can be found in e-Sword 10.0.5 & more recent versions.

Right, I posted about it back in November. About 15 more people a day signup because of that in-program link. A few days ago, we passed 100 new members in a day, the first time that's happened.

One new "feature" in v10.0.7 is that it blocks some resources by abbreviation. For instance, if you have a dictionary titled WordStudy, it won't appear in your list of dictionaries, unless you change the abbreviation to something else. I guess this doesn't happen if the file is the premium module.

Carlos

This might be the answer to my "bad modules" problem. Thank you I will look into this.

e-Sword 9.x blocked the REB by abbreviation.

I could test all possible three letter abbreviations (17 576) , when I do my stress tests. Whilst I could theoretically raise the number to test all ten letter abbreviations, that requires creating 1.41167096 × 1014 resources per resource type. That requires roughly 2.96048857 × 1020MB of disk space, which I don't have. B)

[ Interesting. I'm not logged into Google, but it is using a space as the (thousands) group delimitator. I haven't seen that before. I guess they put everything from the same IP address into one dossier. ]

e-Sword 10.x blocks any official module name, if the module is not encrypted. This was done to prevent module makers from creating support headaches. If I use the same tab name as an official module, and mine shows up, then the official module will not show up. That creates a support nightmare for official resource support. It also prevents some pirate official modules from being used.

The real issue though is one of usability. The best way to handle tab name conflicts is to offer the user the chance to change the tab name, or at least notify the user there was a tab conflict. Presently, the user doesn't know there was a tab name conflict. Instead, e-Sword picks one of the resources to show and shows that one, with no mention of the conflicting tab not being shown. A notification would be a minimum from a usability perspective--the ability to change the tab name would be the best solution. Other Bible software have this ability, hence my suggestion for it a while back.

What is needed here, is a list of official resource names and abbreviations.

This is something that Rick could provide. Or a third party that was willing and able to spend the US$843.54 that it costs to purchase every non-gratis resource for e-Sword. (That is the figure in my spreadsheet, I didn't mark the date I last updated it. That figure excludes the cost of commercially distributed STEP Resources. For an additional US$155.99 plus S&H, one can purchase QuickVerse 2010. I don't have the cost of all of the STEP resources offered by Light By Design. They changed their pricing from US$25 for all resources.)

The best way to handle tab name conflicts is to offer the user the chance to change the tab name, or at least notify the user there was a tab conflict.

For this a list of user created resources, with the file name, resource name, and abbreviation that the original resource creator used would be useful.

###

Josh:

Since BibleSupport.com distributes most of the user created resources, can you whip up a bot to extract that data from resources as they are uploaded, and adds it to a database that is either user downloadable, or displayable/searchable from BibleSupport.com, or, preferably, both? Being 6 067 resources behind, retroactively adding them to the messages posted by the resource announcement bot is somewhat out of the question.

Slightly more work, but adding file size, and a hash value to the list of datapoints about the resource that the bot posts could be very useful in helping people determine if their resource is corrupt, or different from the resource listed here.

This is suggesting keeping different lists. One for e-Sword 9.x, one for e-Sword 8.x, one for
Pocket e-Sword, and one for MySword. If you ever add support for TheWord, then a list for that as well.)

I can post a list of resource file names, official names, and abbrevations from my collection, but since I don't use the names the resource creator used, I don't know how useful it would be to other people.

Vaughn: Run Resourcer on your system, have it generate a CSV file of what you have, and somebody might be able to help you identify the problem resources you have.

I just realized that the Download Resource Manager contains the names and official abbreviations of the resources distributed by e-Sword.net and eStudySource.com.
