"If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me." Matthew 16:24b. Notice that Jesus used the word "If," because the taking up of our cross is conditional. This cross is something we can either ignore, take up, or put down. It is within our ability to choose, or to reject, our cross.
