The 5 basic doctrines of Calvinism described.

W.J. Seaton was an American theologian who provided a clear explanation of the Five Points of Calvinism. These five points are often summarized by the acronym TULIP, representing the core doctrines associated with Calvinist soteriology. According to Seaton, the five points are:
  • Total Depravity: Humanity is entirely affected by sin, meaning every part of a person—mind, will, emotions—is corrupted. As a result, humans are incapable of coming to God without divine intervention.
  • Unconditional Election: God's election of individuals to salvation is not based on any foreseen merit or actions on their part but solely on His divine sovereign will.
  • Limited Atonement (Particular Redemption): Jesus Christ’s atoning death was intended specifically for the elect, effectively securing their salvation rather than providing a potential atonement for all.
  • Irresistible Grace: When God calls an individual to salvation, that call cannot be resisted; God's grace effectively brings the elect to salvation.
  • Perseverance of the Saints: Those whom God has elected and who have been truly saved will persevere in faith and will not permanently fall away.
Seaton’s exposition emphasizes the sovereignty of God in salvation and underscores the Calvinist understanding of divine predestination and grace. These points have historically been central to Reformed theology and continue to be foundational for many Calvinist denominations.
