Synopsis of Christ and His Righteousness by E.J. Waggoner
Christ and His Righteousness by E.J. Waggoner is a profound theological treatise that emphasizes the centrality of Jesus Christ’s life, death, and righteousness in the Christian faith. Waggoner seeks to clarify the gospel message, counter misconceptions, and promote a deeper understanding of salvation through faith in Christ alone.
At its core, the book explores the concept that Christ’s righteousness is the only pathway to salvation. Waggoner asserts that human efforts—good works, moral deeds, or adherence to the law—are insufficient for salvation. Instead, it is only through the imputed and imparted righteousness of Christ that believers can be justified before God. This righteousness is not merely a moral example but a divine gift received through faith.
A key theme of the book is the distinction between righteousness by faith and righteousness by works. Waggoner emphasizes that salvation is a free gift from God, granted through Christ’s atoning sacrifice, and not something earned by human merit. He explains that Christ’s perfect life fulfilled the demands of the law, and His sacrificial death paid the penalty for sin. When individuals accept Christ, they are credited with His righteousness, effectively covering their sins and enabling them to stand justified before God.
Waggoner also discusses the importance of the believer’s union with Christ. He explains that in accepting Christ, believers are spiritually united with Him, sharing in His victory over sin and death. This union is the foundation of the Christian life, empowering believers to live righteously through the power of the Holy Spirit. The book underscores that sanctification—becoming more Christlike—is a result of this union, not a prerequisite for salvation.
The author addresses common misconceptions about the law and the gospel, emphasizing that the law is holy and just but powerless to save. Its purpose is to reveal sin and lead individuals to Christ, who is the only Savior. Waggoner clarifies that the law points out our need for a Savior, and that salvation is entirely dependent on Christ’s atoning work, not on human compliance.
Furthermore, Waggoner highlights the role of faith in Christ’s righteousness. He insists that believers must trust fully in Christ’s finished work, rather than relying on their own efforts. This trust transforms the heart and leads to true righteousness, which is a gift from God, not something earned.
Throughout the book, Waggoner urges believers to focus on Christ as their righteousness, encouraging them to accept the complete work of salvation through faith. He advocates for a hopeful, joyful understanding of the gospel, emphasizing that salvation is accessible to all who believe in Jesus Christ.
In conclusion, Christ and His Righteousness is a compelling call to recognize the sufficiency of Christ’s atoning sacrifice and to rest entirely on His righteousness for salvation. It aims to uplift believers’ faith, dispel legalistic notions, and deepen their understanding of the gospel’s transformative power. Waggoner’s work remains a foundational exposition on the doctrine of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

- 06/15/25 Added synopsis to Description, Uploaded topx and refi module files
I noticed that David Cox's adaptation of the references for e-Sword provided a zipped file, containing a module named: Waggoner-Christ_and_his_Rightousnessv9.topx.
The 7-zip file is useful to be able to unzip a folder and see the list of the zipped files. 7-Zip is free software, available from 7-zip.org, copyright © 1999-3024 Igor Pavlov. 7-Zip works in Windows 11 / 10 / 8 / 7 / Vista / XP / 2022 / 2019 / 2016 / 2012 / 2008 / 2003 / 2000.
I moved a copy of this *.topx file to the User Files Location, so that I could edit the content with the Topic Editor. I noticed that in e-Sword version 14.1.0 in Windows 10 the Topic Editor only finds the reference if it is followed by a space, or a comma, or a period, or the close bracket, but not if it is followed by a colon. I queried this with Rick Meyers, who designed e-Sword, and his reply was, "Olaf, Yes, that has always been the case." Reply received Sunday 2024-08-04 South African time. So
evidently David Cox had not checked that his hyperlinks to the Reference entries would always display the linked reference. For example, he had the following reference in chapter 01 - Introduction
The exhortation to consider Jesus and also the reason therefor, are given in Heb_12:1-3:
This reference is correctly hyper-linked to the Bible book, chapter, and range of verses, but does not pop up with the selected Bible, because the hyperlink is followed by a colon.
If you previously had the *.topx file in that folder, please remove it. Then the Bible Support version of e-Sword Module Downloader will be able to save the *.topx file from the unzipped folder into the User's ...\Download\e-Sword\ folder.
When you have put the *.topx file into the User Files Location folder, then when you re-start e-Sword Version 14.1.0 that will convert the content of the *.topx files to *.topi entries, while retaining the *.topx files intact. You can them edit the new *.topi modules.
If you re-start e-Sword version 12.2.0 then you can edit the *.topx module, if it is in the User File Location folder.
