It might seem from a casual reading of the prayer that Jabez was very self centred, he was not praying for other people, he was asking God specifically for things for himself. In Christianity there are situations when you must be very self centred, not that you are only thinking of your own self aggrandisement, not that kind of self centredness, but your own personal relations with God. We find this continually in Paul's epistles, particularly in writing to Timothy, "Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine...... for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee" (1Ti_4:16). This is a situation where we need to be self centred in the sense of building up our souls in divine knowledge and with experience and communion with God and with our Lord Jesus Christ. We will never be any help for anyone unless we have personal links with the Lord. So do not think for one moment that here Jabez was out of line when he kept on praying for himself and for things for himself. I think that if we prayed in this way and got the answer that he got we would be of some use for other people. Now let us look at the contents of this prayer.
