Robert J. Wieland

FOREWORD
Original title THE GLAD TIDINGS Galatians Made Clear. Originally published in 1900. Republished in 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1978, 1984, 1988 and 1994.
Almost by chance I discovered in 1938 a precious copy of an out-of-print edition of The Glad Tidings by E. J. Waggoner resting in a private library. Knowing nothing about the author or the book, I felt my heart warm strangely as I read it. I was aware that I had gone into a new experience in my life when I came across a truly special book. Fearing that I would never see another copy, I obtained permission to bring my tired typewriter into the library, where I copied page by page the most wonderful passages for always.
Until I found The Glad Tidings I never really understood what Paul's epistle to the Galatians really meant. What confused me in Galatians was the seemingly irreconcilable conflict between law and faith. I knew that Paul, in his epistles, exalted the law as "holy, just, and good." Romans 7:12. But in Galatians he seemed to contradict himself. The apparent discrepancies and contradictions puzzled me. Most of Galatians' commentaries were either dry or simply against the law. Galatians was beyond me, failing to experience that love and consecration to Christ that Paul was obviously experiencing. Being so puzzled about Galatians, how could I ever learn to "boast" of Christ's cross as Paul did?
Ever since my first chance encounter with this book more than thirty years ago, I have dreamed of making a small contribution by giving it back to my contemporaries. But there were some difficulties. Dr. Waggoner often used the old English Revised Version (1881); Most of today's readers would not have direct access to this version. That's why I replaced it with the Revised Standard Version, which is generally consistent with the old Revised Version. Then, the syntax used by Dr. Waggoner was sometimes difficult. Although his literary style was unusually clear and concise for a nineteenth-century writer, I tried to present him in a more up-to-date literary form. Some repetitions have been removed without affecting the intent or underscores of the original. Other passages that were not vitally important to the teaching of justification by faith were removed, as they were not relevant to current concerns. Every measure was taken to keep Waggoner's original message of justification by faith exactly as he preached it.
Perhaps I can borrow the words of C. S. Lewis that he said about George MacDonald's book, Unspoken Sermons, and wholeheartedly apply them to Waggoner's book, The Glad Tidings: "I am personally indebted to this book as much as one man can be indebted to another." I am pleased to offer the modern reader a treasure, which I am confident will prove as useful in enriching his life as he has enriched mine.
Robert J. Wieland.
INTRODUCTION
It is customary that, when writing about one of the books of the Bible, the author takes some time to write an introduction. But it is better to introduce the reader directly into the study of the book, and thus he will find out for himself, if he is persevering and faithful, all that it can reveal to him. We know a man better by talking to him than by listening to someone else talk about him. So we will begin without delay the study of Paul's epistle to the Galatians.
If everyone studied the Bible prayerfully and earnestly as they should, paying full attention to every word and receiving it as coming directly from God, there would be no need for any other religious book. Everything written should have the sole purpose of directing attention more directly to the words of Scripture. Anything that replaces the Bible with any man's ideas, so that by being guided by them people become satisfied without studying the Bible further, is worse than useless.
May God, through this small help in studying the Word, make every reader a better connoisseur of the Scriptures, who can give him the wisdom that leads to salvation.
E. J. Waggoner
