Synopsis of "A Sermon on the New Birth" by Benoni Stinson

Benoni Stinson’s "A Sermon on the New Birth" is a profound and theologically rich exposition that emphasizes the necessity of spiritual renewal for salvation. Delivered as an exhortation to believers and seekers alike, the sermon underscores the transformative power of the new birth—an essential, divine act required for entering the kingdom of God.

Stinson begins by establishing the fundamental Christian doctrine that salvation is not achieved through human effort alone but is a divine work initiated by God's grace. He references Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus in John 3:3-7, where Jesus states, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Stinson interprets this as the core message of the sermon: the new birth is a spiritual rebirth, a dramatic change of heart that results in newness of life.

The preacher emphasizes that the new birth is not a mere external change or superficial reformation; it is an inward transformation wrought by the Holy Spirit. This spiritual rebirth involves a death to the old sinful self and a resurrection into a new life characterized by holiness and obedience. Stinson stresses that this change is entirely initiated by God’s grace and is necessary because mankind is inherently sinful and alienated from God. Without this divine intervention, individuals remain in spiritual darkness and separation from divine life.

Throughout the sermon, Stinson highlights the importance of faith in receiving the new birth. He calls on his audience to believe in the sufficiency of Christ’s atoning sacrifice and to trust in the promises of salvation through grace. Faith, according to Stinson, is the instrument by which individuals are born again, and this faith must be genuine, heartfelt, and accompanied by repentance.

Stinson also discusses the symptoms and evidence of the new birth in a believer’s life. He describes it as producing a sincere love for God and neighbor, a desire to live righteously, and a heartfelt repentance for sin. The believer’s affections are radically transformed, leading to a life marked by humility, gratitude, and obedience to God's commandments. The sermon underscores that the new birth is not a one-time event but a continual process of growth and sanctification.

Furthermore, Stinson warns against relying on external religious acts or moral efforts alone for salvation, emphasizing that true regeneration is a spiritual work that changes the heart. He calls for personal reflection, repentance, and a sincere pursuit of holiness, urging individuals to seek the new birth fervently.

In conclusion, Benoni Stinson’s "A Sermon on the New Birth" presents a compelling argument for the necessity of divine regeneration as the foundation of Christian life. It offers a call to humility, faith, and earnest seeking of God's grace, urging believers to experience the transformative power of the Holy Spirit. The sermon reinforces the idea that the new birth is the pivotal step in entering into a restored relationship with God, leading to a life of holiness, peace, and eternal salvation.
