The Belgic Confession 1.0
Author:
Guido de Brès
e-Sword Version:
9.x - 10.x
Synopsis
The Belgic Confession, also known as the "Confessio Belgica," is a foundational doctrinal statement for Reformed Christian churches, particularly within the Dutch Reformed tradition. Drafted in 1561 by Guido de Brès, a Reformed pastor and theologian in the Netherlands during a time of religious turmoil, the confession was intended to articulate and defend the core beliefs of Reformed Christianity against both Catholic and emerging Protestant criticisms. It was officially adopted by the Reformed churches in the Low Countries and has since become a key doctrinal standard for Reformed communities worldwide.
The confession begins with a declaration of the authority of Scripture as the inspired Word of God. It emphasizes that the Bible is the ultimate rule of faith and practice, asserting that salvation is only possible through faith in Jesus Christ. The document underscores the importance of the Holy Spirit in illuminating Scripture and guiding believers, highlighting the necessity of divine grace for salvation.
The Belgic Confession then addresses the nature of God, affirming the doctrine of the Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—as three persons in one divine essence. It describes God's attributes such as omnipotence, omniscience, and goodness, emphasizing God's sovereignty over all creation and history. The confession also affirms that God's plan of salvation was established before the foundation of the world and that Christ’s atoning work is sufficient and effective for the elect.
A significant portion of the confession discusses the person and work of Jesus Christ. It affirms Christ's divine and human natures, His incarnation, atoning death, and resurrection, emphasizing that salvation is through faith in Christ alone. The confession stresses that Christ's sacrifice is the only sufficient means for reconciliation with God and that faith is the instrument through which believers receive this salvation.
The document elaborates on the doctrine of predestination, affirming that God's election is based solely on His divine will, not human merit, and emphasizing the comfort and assurance this doctrine provides to believers. It also discusses the church’s nature, describing it as a spiritual body composed of all believers, united through faith and the Word of God.
The Belgic Confession also addresses the sacraments—baptism and the Lord’s Supper—affirming their roles as visible signs of God's grace. It emphasizes the importance of church discipline, the proper worship of God, and the perseverance of saints, asserting that true believers will endure to the end.
Finally, the confession concludes with a call to live a holy life in obedience to God's commandments, trusting in His grace for perseverance and salvation. Throughout, it emphasizes God's glory, the centrality of Christ’s work, and the necessity of faith for salvation, serving as a comprehensive summary of Reformed doctrine rooted in Scripture.
About the Author
Guido de Brès (also spelled Brugès or Bréès) was a prominent 16th-century Reformed theologian and martyr whose life and work significantly contributed to the Protestant Reformation, particularly within the Dutch-speaking regions of Europe. Born around 1522 in the region of Flanders, which was then part of the Habsburg Netherlands, de Brès’s early life was shaped by the religious and political upheavals that characterized the period.
Little is known about his early years, but it is believed that Guido de Brès received a solid education, possibly in law or theology, which prepared him for his later role as a preacher and reformer. As the Protestant movement gained momentum across Europe, de Brès became an active supporter of the Reformation, advocating for the doctrinal principles that challenged the authority of the Roman Catholic Church. He was deeply committed to the teachings of Scripture and the principles of justification by faith alone, which were central tenets of Protestant theology.
De Brès’s theological work is most famously encapsulated in his treatise titled “The Belgic Confession” (originally “Confessio Belgica”), a doctrinal statement that articulated the core beliefs of Reformed Protestantism. Although he was not the sole author of this confession, his influence and leadership were instrumental in shaping its content. The Belgic Confession was written around 1559 and served as a vital doctrinal foundation for Reformed churches in the Low Countries and beyond. It was intended to clarify and defend Protestant beliefs amidst the persecution and suppression of reformers by the Catholic authorities.
Guido de Brès’s dedication to the Reformation made him a target of persecution. As the Catholic authorities intensified their efforts to suppress Protestantism, de Brès faced increasing danger. Despite this, he continued to preach and promote the Reformation principles covertly. His unwavering commitment ultimately led to his arrest, trial, and subsequent martyrdom. In 1567, Guido de Brès was executed by burning in Valenciennes (present-day France), a testament to his steadfast faith and dedication to reform.
De Brès’s legacy endures through the Belgic Confession, which remains a foundational doctrinal document for many Reformed churches around the world. His life exemplifies the courage and conviction of early Protestant martyrs who risked everything to uphold their beliefs in the face of persecution. Guido de Brès is remembered as a passionate defender of Christian orthodoxy and a pioneer of Reformed thought, inspiring generations of believers and reformers to stand firm in their faith.
