#11045 Maori Bible News

Posted by APsit190 on 19 July 2012 - 03:02 AM

All,
I have just completed a tad over 64% of the verses of the Bible, and completed approx 37% of the Books of the Maori Bible.

All in all, there are 66 Books of the Bible containing a total of 31,102 verses.

OK, I'll put you out of your misery and save you all a headache in trying to find out what the 20,000th verse of the Bible is.

The 20,000th verse of the Bible is Jeremiah 43:2, which in the Maori Bible is, "Katahi ka korero a Ataria tama a Hohaia, ratou ko Hohanana tama a Karea, ko nga tangata whakapehapeha katoa ano hoki, ka mea ki a Heremaia, E korero teka ana koe: kihai a Ihowa, to tatou Atua, i unga mai i a koe hei mea, Kaua koutou e haere ki Ih ipa, ki reira noho ai." Which in English (using the KJ3 translation) is, " Azariah, the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the proud men, then spoke, saying to Jeremiah, You speak falsely. Jehovah our God has not sent you to say, Do not go to Egypt, to sojourn there.

#11042 Does anyone have the problem I do?

Posted by APsit190 on 18 July 2012 - 09:54 PM

I unpinned or hid the dictionaries and later, when I wanted to open them to look up a word they would not show. All I get is a greyish blank area. Is there a fix for that glitch?

The fix to your, ummm, glitch is simply this . . .

e-s_ResourceOptions.jpg

And if any of them are empty, then you've got no other modules installed. As you can see by the Screenshot, those are the list of installed resources. And this is the sort of thing you should be able to see. In your Options menu, click on the Resource... menu Item for the Resource Options dialog to come up. If any of them are unchecked, just click on the check box next any of the unchecked ones, and that will fix any of your issues. If there is nothing at all in your Resource Options dialog is a good indication that you don't have any of those resources installed in your Program Files/e-Sword folder.

#11025 esword 10

Posted by APsit190 on 17 July 2012 - 07:51 PM

e-Sword 9.x, and later use the SQLite database engine.
e-Sword 8.x, and earlier, use the Jet database engine;

Your description indicates that you are installing resources that utilize the Jet database engine.  Downloading resources that utilize the SQLite database engine would be in order, if you are using e-Sword 10.x.

jonathon

I can go into my computer and prog files...esword and i can see the ...spurgeon files.... the expositors bible..... pinks download..... etc. etc
but i cannot see them in the esword programme.  they dont show in topics or reference .

obviously i am doing something wrong..... but what is it. please advise me. thanks

i have esword 10  on windows 7

Looking at both your last question and prior to that, Jonathon Blake's reply, here is an interpreted view of what could be taking place

You could have installed modules that are version 8x or older. When you look at the file extension of the resources in your Program Files\e-Sword folder, are they:
  • bbl or bblx
  • cmt or cmtx
  • dct or dctx
  • not or notx
  • top or topx
  • dev or devx
  • map or mapx
  • and etc
If they are bbl and etc, then you have the old e-Sword 8x and below resources, and they will not be seen in e-Sword 9x and above. Delete these files and replace them with the newer version which have the 4 character extension to the file name.

I hope this information has helped you. Please let me know if things have worked out.

<p>No, not in a practical way.</p>

<p>

<p> </p>
<p>Hi Josh,</p>
<p>I&#39;m just not certain as to what you mean by that. What seems to be impracticable about it? I find it extremely straight forward.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Admittedly one just just do it as a &quot;Save As...&quot; or as an &quot;Export to...,&quot; however in the way it does it the user can include security to the document and etc. There are options available for the author in WordPerfect that is not there in other word processing software.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Apperantly, although I&#39;m not totally absolutely certain, with the latest version of WP it seems one is able to edit pdf documents within it. As to how this is done I don&#39;t know.</p>

#10672 e-Sword Module Downloader

Posted by APsit190 on 04 July 2012 - 04:39 PM

You can always manually download the e-Sword resources. These links could disappear at anytime, though. That's presumably why he made the module downloader internal.

Hi Josh,
Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, bro, but these pages are as dead as dead they can be. I think a notice needs to be posted on the front page letting everyone know that e-Sword's official resources are no longer available to download from e-Sword.net.

#10671 What Modules do you want for e-Sword

Posted by APsit190 on 04 July 2012 - 04:24 PM

I would like to see Bullinger's A Critical Lexicon and Concordance !!!!!!

It seems that E.W. Bullinger was quite a prolific author. I first came across one of his works which was regarded as quite controversial, Witness to the Stars. Another work I came across was, Numbers in Scripture. That book I quite enjoyed, but the Witness to the Stars I wasn't too sure about, and still am uncertain about because of the controversy around it.

There is quite a lot of stuff on this site by E.W. Bullinger for both e-Sword (desktop) and MySword (Android Mobile devices), and if you haven't downloaded them, I genuinely recommend them to you.

#10648 My issues with BibleSupport "SEEMS" to be fixed

Posted by APsit190 on 03 July 2012 - 06:00 PM

All,
First, let me thank those who actually did try to help me (at Yahoo Groups) despite the issues having not been resolved. But now it seems to be solved.

Second, I think (and the operative word is, "think") that I solved the problem I had/have with the BibleSupport web site. It SEEMED that the problem was with the Adobe Flash player more than anything else. It appears that the version I had just didn't like the way the home page was running. The main page (on my browser) shows a continual updating of downloads that have occurred and are occurring, and so the previous version wasn't taking to kindly to that.

I don't know why I didn't think of updating Adobe Flash before. I guess it never crossed my mind. So, I hope that this has actually fixed the problem.

To Josh,
Sorry for my crankiness, Brother, and thank you for putting up with me. For a young fella you got a lot of patience. More than this old fella. So bless you heaps for that.

#10535 Font Size Adjustments

Posted by APsit190 on 28 June 2012 - 06:55 PM

This applies to commentaries, dictionaries, Bibles, devotionals. But not Topics/Reference Library books. Topics/Ref Library books always use the font size and type specified by the module maker.

HI Josh,
Just a slight correction here, and not to be pedantic or picky here :D,  the user can set the default font and font size for all the editors in the Fonts dialog (window).

Also, the user can change fonts and font sizes from the editors' toolbar and/or by left or right (depending on user's mouse settings) clicking and choosing Fonts from the context menu.

Essentially, these are the three options a user has to change the fonts. Where the user changes the Editors' default font settings, this happens to all three Editors, as where the other two options only work in the current Editor that one is using.

I trust this added info is helpful.

#10403 Bible Study with e-Sword

Posted by APsit190 on 25 June 2012 - 06:29 AM

As I look at the vast array of modules available for e-Sword, perhaps the most overwhelming thought that comes to mind is that we actually have a very powerful Bible study tool.

The two most critical components for good Bible study and interpretation of Scripture is having the the resources available to help achieve these things, and they are a good set of dictionaries and commentaries. As I look at what is actually available for e-Sword, and what has been recently created, I am astounded at what is available.

Some of the resources available for good exegesis, which can be used in conjunction with each other, are:

For Dictionaries:
  • WordStudy Dictionary
  • Vine's Old and New Testament Dictionaries
  • Wilson's Dictionary of Bible Types
For Commentaries:
  • Vincent's Word Studies
  • Robertson Word Pictures
  • Lange's Bible Commentary
There are many others I can mention that can be added to this list. But what I've pointed out, would have to be the main ones which actually gives the Bible student the depth needed to go into the Word of God.

Josh Bond, in particular has to be credited with bringing out works that have extreme Hermeneutical value for great exegesis. Also, as a result of the above list of Dictionaries available for e-Sword, makes this program perhaps one of the best.

These kinds of resources are invaluable when it comes to good Bible Study. And here is the best part of it, use these in your Topic and Study Note editors, and you have one very powerful program which will bless you beyond measure.

#10381 Let's fix e-Sword Comment Navigation

Posted by APsit190 on 24 June 2012 - 07:11 PM

One of my critiques of e-Sword has been the inability of a user to have a bird's eye view of comments. Now days, this is expected in Bible study software.

Fix the Next Comment/Previous Comment Button
The Next Comment/Previous Comment button works great, as long as I'm viewing a comment. When I'm not currently viewing a comment (no comment in the commentary), it does not work. But isn't that when I need the next/previous comment button most? When I can't find a comment? When I'm on a verse that has no comment, if I click the next comment or previous comment button, ideally e-Sword would go to the next comment--just as it does when I am viewing a comment.

What if you're in Scofield's Notes in 1 Kings. We click a verse. No comment. You wonder, what does the author have to say about 1 Kings--anywhere in 1 Kings? You should able to click Next Comment or Previous Comment and you would instantly see the next or previous in the commentary. This would just help to find comments when comments are sparse. And it's just plain user friendly.

Bird's Eye View of Comments
Here are a couple of ideas on how to create a real, bird's eye view of comments. Ideas like this are now standard in free Bible software, so I take no credit for the ideas.

Here's one way, but I suspect e-Sword's Visual Basic implementation has too much of a fixed layout for this to be done in the current Visual Basic sandbox.

Implementation #1:

Here's another way that would be user friendly and easy to code, even in the confines of VB.

Implementation #2.

That's my two cents. I welcome yours!

The big problem with chapter and verse comments is most users never look at them. I hate putting content into these areas because I know most users will never look there.

So, we can fix this problem too! Show the chapter and book references with the verse reference in that dictionary-style pane that Dave mentioned. Or in the drop down verse selector I showed.

Example:

Gen
Gen 1
Gen 1:1
Gen 1:2
etc (see screenshot)

Now, how is blindly searching for comments better than seeing them all? :)  Again, none of this is my idea. The wheel's already been invented. I'm just describing what I've seen others do. I'd like to see e-Sword benefit from it.

Hi Josh,
You've raised some interesting ideas here, and in what you've suggested actually makes perfect common sense. It certainly makes the Commentaries more user friendly.

In the way you've shown it in the User Manual by using the Commentaries Search dialog, when using the "$" string variable to find the comments, all books and chapter comments are at the top (Books comments, chapter comments, and then finally the verse comments) isn't a very user friendly way to have an overview of the Commentary, but in what you've suggested, particularly Implementation #2, and the Book and Chapter illustration, would certainly make things a very user friendly.

If Rick implements idea, I can envisage just how much more simpler and easier for the user to use e-Sword. Its pretty good now, but it would be even make it way better for the non-technical user.

#10280 Module Request: Youngs Analytical Concordance

Posted by APsit190 on 22 June 2012 - 01:44 AM

Here in good ol' Kiwi land (New Zealand, aka, Aotearoa (that's the Maori name) there use to be three main lines of Bible Concordances, of which by their names defined where one as by those who used them.
  • Young's was for the young Christian
  • Crudence was for the crude Christian
  • And Strong's for the strong Christian.
Now, using any of these concordances defined your spirituality, so for those who were really spiritual always opted for the Strong's Exhaustive Concordance. Now, just to be doubly sure that one was really spiritual, and had to be seen in that light, you could not go past either Dake's Bible or the Thompson Chain reference Bible, and it had to be the King James Version. Nothing else could match it. Using the RV or the RSV just couldn't cut the mustard. You were regarded as a backslider if you didn't have the KJV.

Now, of coarse this is a wonderful tale to tell to your grandchildren of what it was to be in your youth, and of how spiritual you were(n't).

Well, now that was all in good fun to put this up. And seeing Young's Concordance being mentioned (after nearly forgetting that I had it at one time) brought back a flood of memories of my early Christian days. I also had a Thompson Chain Reference KJV Bible. Back in the 1970s that is all one could get in a Thompson Chain.

Ahhh, the wonderful memories.

#10245 Window Auto Hide

Posted by APsit190 on 20 June 2012 - 05:48 PM

Hi! I closed (hid) the editor window by pressing on the little Auto-Hide pin in the upper right corner. Now I do not know how to restore the window. Can anybody help?

The missing window should be on one of the edges of your screen as a rectangular tab. Click on that to bring the window back. You will still need to click on the Auto-hide pin in the corner or the window will disappear again when you use a different window. :)

Just a note here. How to customize your windows in e-Sword, which includes how to hide and and how to show is all in the e-Sword Users Guide. You can access your guide in the Help Menu by clicking on "Contents" menu Item. You will require Adobe (or some other pdf format reader of your choice) to able to access the file.

Remember this, almost all issues and difficulties one encounters with e-Sword can be answered in the e-Sword User Guide. I trust this information is helpful to you (or anyone else which needs answers of how-to in e-Sword).

#10242 Installer Menu for Power Users

Posted by APsit190 on 20 June 2012 - 04:54 PM

My initial thought would be: Why do power users need a menu to install something? If someone's tech savvy enough to make modules, they're tech savvy enough to install a few apps?

Or maybe I'm just misunderstanding what your proposing. If the menu package includes T4, that will keep you quite busy. :D Releases of that product come frequently, mostly because someone (usually me or Dave) keeps asking for new features. I'm on the second generation of a beta right now that will probably be released soon.

HI Josh,
Its something I do now to those whom I give e-Sword too, which is part of a 2 CD package, and that I thought it would be great to extend it to those who have friends who wish to have a bunch of tools which they can use in the help of creating, editing, and etc., modules. That said, at the moment I'm trying to gauge what interest there might be for such a installer menu.

With regards to T4, I think you have a point, as it would be difficult to keep up with every new release, especially with the way you are having poor old Brent making changes and/or adding things to the program. You gotta have the poor bloke running ragged and stressed. :P  (Just kidding about that). I'm just glad that e-Sword doesn't come out fast as that. ;)

Anyway, I'd like to see some more comments on this of what other Power Users (great name, eh mate) think before I do anything about it.

#10196 Audio Matthew Henry Commentary

Posted by APsit190 on 18 June 2012 - 03:28 PM

I haven't seen one anywhere around. About the only thing one can actually buy or get a hold of something remotely of that nature is an Audio Bible of one sort or another. eStudySource.com use to, or still has some Audio books, but I've never seen for of a Bible Commentary there.

About the only way around it is for someone to actually create an audio file of it (now wouldn't that be fun?!), and as to how that could be done I really have no idea.

I've just done a Google search on it, and nothing along the lines of what you want has come up. So, I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news on that.

#10172 What is clean text?

Posted by APsit190 on 17 June 2012 - 10:08 PM

But Josh, I've SEEN modules uploaded that look just like that!  Are you saying there is a quality standard here???  lol

Hi Brad,
Absolutely and and totally! Fact is, bro, as a High Quality module creator, you get your names up in lights. In other words, you get mentioned and being recognized as one who creates quality modules/resources for e-Sword. That makes your work as something that ought to be downloaded.

I praise God for blokes like you, Josh, and others (names escape my mind) who've created quality modules have actually lifted the bar of what is acceptable and required for modules. the days of "mass production and push it through" type resource creation are over, and I tend to think those that are of poor quality will no longer be accepted. But that's a guess.
