#40691 e-Sword Version 13 does not start

Posted by Son seeker on 31 March 2021 - 08:20 AM

Issue solved!

Rick found the source of the problem, at least for my setup:

e-Sword (even version 12) uses the legacy Windows Media Player to access audio sermons and Bibles. If the WMPlayer is not installed and activated on your PC then version 13 will not run.

In Windows 10 Settings under "Apps"/"Apps and features" you can see if the Windows Media Player is installed on your system. But it must also be activated. Example: On my PC it was listed under "additional features" as an "installed feature", yet was not activated. I had to use the Windows Key + R to open "Run" and input "optionalfeatures" to open the window allowing me to activate the WMPlayer. (See attached graphic.)

After that version 13 installed and ran correctly.

I hope this helps those few who had a similar problem.

And many thanks to Rick for going the "extra mile" with me to solve this issue.

There is another step the above users have not noticed. They must look for the e-Sword-InstallShield Wizard. This is running in the task bar. License Agreement. Rick Meyers has added the following instruction: "Please read the following license agreement carefully. e-Sword (Registered) Copyright © 2000-2021 Rick Meyers. All Rights Reserved worldwide. Notice that there are two options > I accept the terms in the license agreement. > I do not accept the terms in the license agreement.
NOTE: The default option is the second, in which you do NOT accept the terms of the license agreement. If you do NOT respond appropriately, then the InstallShield will not be allowed to proceed, and e-Sword version 13.0.0 will NOT be loaded into the PC in the required drive, path, and e-Sword folder. Rick Meyers is checking whether you can pay attention to instructions, and whether you are prepared to surrender your own will, and to comply appropriately. God uses exactly the same method.

The missing information about audio Bibles: Load e-Sword version 13.0.0 Then open the "Help" tab, and look at "About". There is a paragraph, which tells us:
"All audio Bibles are generously provided by Bible.is, a ministry of Faith Comes By Hearing. More information can be found at www.bible.is"
You will find details on Bible.is - Faith Comes by Hearing = https://www.faithcom...urces/bible-is

Of course I clicked on the option to accept the terms of the license agreement, otherwise e-Sword would not install at all. That is not the problem, but rather that a properly installed version 13 will not run on my PC.

The reason it is not working is that download is being corrupted during the download process by either MS Edge or Windows Defender. I just download the program using Google Chrome and had no issue with download. This issue is related to Windows Defender and other antivirus software and how they protect Windows.

I wish that was really the problem, but unfortunately it isn't. My download was not corrupted - it passed the CRC32 check: 93FEB31F.

Regardless of what browser I use to download the installation file, e-Sword 13 will not start on my PC after a clean installation.

My only guess is that it's something similar to the problems some had with the first release of version 12.x, which required an update later to fix the issue.

First do a complete uninstall of e-Sword 13 from your PC, then download the installer again if possible using a different browser such as Google Chrome. If do not have a second browser then temporarily turn off your antivirus software, and download the installer again. Once the download is complete turn your antivirus software back on

I have the same warning in"Microsoft Defender Smart Screen" because the file is very recent and not tested by Microsoft.

So click on "Run anyway" and install it.

The problem is not the download or the installation warnings. I can work around all of those. The problem is that the correctly installed version 13 does not run on my PC.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Remember when version 12 was first released many had similar issues with e-Sword not running. Could this be a similar situation with some aspect of the newest version not being compatible with some setups?

#40651 e-Sword Version 13 does not start

Posted by Son seeker on 28 March 2021 - 02:03 AM

I just downloaded and installed e-Sword Version 13 on a Windows 10 machine and discovered it does not start. When the icon is clicked on nothing happens. Because of a similar problem with version 12.x in the past I copied the entire e-Sword folder before installing the new version and was able to restore version 12.2. Anyone else having similar problems?

I love e-Sword and have used it almost daily for many years and always look forward to the newer versions. But these recent problems have made me cautious, which is why I backed up my previous version before installing version 13. Otherwise I would be without e-Sword until a fix is uploaded.

I hope I'm the only one with this issue, but afraid I'm not . . .

Jon, thanks for posting Rick's email.

I just installed e-Sword from the "new" download file of version 11.2.2 "as Administrator" and it now starts and runs normally. The installation from the "old" download file failed to start on this PC earlier, so it seems the problem may be solved.

Hope others who were having problems before have the same positive experience as I . . .

Use System Restore to roll back to a state before you updated e-Sword

That's the only thing that worked for me. Hoping for a real fix soon . . .

Concerning Windows update as a possible cause: that's not the source of the problem, but rather compatibility issues with the text control e-Sword uses from another vendor. What causes them is still a mystery . . .

Just installed the latest version (11.2.2 dated Nov. 19, 2018). When I tried to run e-Sword I got this error message. (See attached image.) Anyone else having the same problem? Unfortunately I didn't keep the download of version 11.2.1, which worked great. So I'm presently not able to use e-Sword . . .

#10596 User font settings in modules

Posted by Son seeker on 02 July 2012 - 10:25 AM

I know it's only a "cosmetic" problem, but this issue of varying font styles, sizes, etc. makes e-Sword sometimes look very unprofessional, which is sad considering the program's otherwise powerful features. I hope in a future update that it'll be possible for each user to set default font settings of his choice that apply across the board to every aspect of e-Sword: Bibles, dictionaries, commentaries, reference and topic materials, etc. without exception.

Until then it unfortunately often has the amateurish appearance of being a container of randomly formatted materials lacking any consistency. E-Sword deserves better!

I use Times New Roman 12 as my standard font for just about every .topx./.refx module I build. Old habits die hard.

Most of those familier with typography say that Times New Roman is the font that should be avoided if at all possible.

A personal request to all Module Makers:

Please format your modules so they utilize e-Sword's user font settings. (Font style, size, etc.) This ensures a uniform "look" across e-Sword. The way it is now many modules are a disarrayed mix of different fonts, sizes, etc. which makes e-Sword look less professional than it could . . . and should.

Thanks for taking this request into consideration. And thanks for all the time and effort you invest in these resources for others!

#9201 I like the old e-Sword because .

Drag-and-drop is a single bit to enable and I'm able to copy and paste between T3 and T4, and T3 does not use Text Control, but Microsofts RTF control.  Note - I'm using v17 of Text Control and e-Sword is using v16, so there may be differences.  But in v17 it is a trivial addition to enable drag-n-drop.

In addition to Drag-and-Drop I'm still hoping for the possibility to set hanging bullets as a default paragraph format. If I understand the documentation on the Text Control homepage correctly then hanging bullets are supported. Could it be that it just has to be activated in the API as an option, like the Drag-and-Drop function mentioned above? If so, then why not . . .?

#9125 I like the old e-Sword because .

I still use e-Sword V. 9 because of missing features and sometimes unpredictable results with the new editor controls. For example:
  • It's no longer possible to make "hanging" bullets the default setting in all editor windows, but rather each new paragraph has to be reset to "hanging" bullets by hand. "Hanging" bullets are default in every text editor I know, so I don't understand why it can't be incorporated in e-Sword. (Even this line I just typed here is a "hanging" bullet by default.)
  • Trying to change the default indentations in the format paragraph dialogue box causes very unpredictable results. It seems like any indentations other than 0.5" are simply ignored. Trying to combine first line indentations and second line indentations to achieve the "hanging" bullet format usually results in something very different than the values that were entered or no indentations at all.
  • If a bullet has been formatted by hand so the second line is also indented ("hanging"), then trying to indent such lines to a second or third level to achieve an outline format is very difficult and usually undoes the previous formatting. In V. 9 this can be done with one simple click to the "indent" icon to very easily create a mult-level outline format. In V. 10 it's either not possible or very labor intensive.
I've used the above formats in my topic and study notes for years and prefer to keep future notes in the same format. Unfortunately I can only do that by staying with V. 9 until the editor controls are hopefully updated sometime in the future.

I really like e-Sword and use it daily, and I appreciate very much all the time and effort that's been invested in it. But it is a bit frustrating when a software update adds new features but at the same time drops the most basic default features of any text editor like drag and drop, hanging bullet formats and multiple indentation.

#8398 Module format request

Posted by Son seeker on 23 April 2012 - 06:56 AM

I really appreciate all the great work many have done to provide modules here. But I do have one request: Would it be possible to create the modules so that they use the default font and font size in e-Sword? For example: several very high quality modules such as the Pulpit Commentary seem to have pre-set fonts that don't change to my default e-Sword font.

It's only a cosmetic thing, but it would be nice if all modules were formated like the "standard" ones downloaded through e-Sword itself so as to automatically adjust to the default e-Sword settings.

Or can someone let me know how I can change this myself with a SQLite editor without breaking the module?

Thanks and blessings to all who have so blessed us!
