#44685 I just have to tell somebody

Posted by MJ_ on 09 July 2023 - 06:27 AM

Nothing so precious as God's word. Esword does provide a great way to have access to the texts of so many different versions. But there is nothing so precious as hard copy that one can sit down and study with.

I have built out my library such that as when the US finally collapses under it's own evil, and all the things we have now, like electricity, internet are gone, I will have ample materials to study.

#44152 james Moffatt translation - becomes public domain when?

Posted by MJ_ on 04 March 2023 - 07:13 AM

I have completed my work on this Moffatt old testament comprising of Job through Malachi and I've combined it with the new testament Moffatt.

Should anyone desire a copy of the combined Moffatt  bible including my work or just the Job through Malachi work please feel free to send me a private message with an email address and I'll get a copy to you.

Ten days later I have the first complete draft of this Moffatt work. Job to Malachi.

I'll need to proof it a bit.

The quality of OCR is really not changed a whole lot in the last ten years when I did my first bible.

Fortunately now I can write my own tools to simplify a bit.

Kind regards,

MJ

Hi all. How are you feeling?

Not sure how to answer this.

Greetings friends.

#44077 james Moffatt translation - becomes public domain when?

Posted by MJ_ on 19 February 2023 - 12:17 AM

Hi,

First, my disclaimer: I am not a legal expert at all. But this is what I found doing a quick search.

I found the Moffatt Old Testament (or half of it) on archive.org here:

https://archive.org/...t-1925/mode/2up

According to this page, it is public domain and was published in 1925. According to Wikipedia, all works published in the US before January 1, 1928 are in the public domain (in the US), so it would seem that the Moffatt OT is indeed in the public domain already.

I pulled down this file in the text format. It's rough with lot's of OCR errors.

Y's are v's, E's are c's and also including some characters that the OCR software seems to have invented.

I finished A rough copy of Job and parts of the Psalms, and probably invested 9,10 or 11 hours into it, I lost track. haha. Tooltip NT compiled it ok but in the book of Job, Moffatt got really creative with the chapters so I think what I'll have to do is include king James line numbers for esword indexing and inset Moffatts verse numbers along with the verse text. Probably will be able to make that determination by chapter.

I'll probably just call this a beta and call it good when I run out of steam!

Kind regards,

MJ

I don't know of any e-Sword version of Moffat's OT kicking around, just the NT.

I do have a copy of it that I've reduced to the .rtf format. However the old testament is only bits of several books. For example it includes sections of Job 10, some verses from Ezekiel, Jeremiah, Daniel and some others I believe.

It appears someone was adding in verses as needed for their personal bible study.

I believe that I can make a copy that contains whatever is available at this link:

https://archive.org/...t-1925/mode/2up

however, the correction of OCR misses on characters would be rather time consuming but would not be completely necessary as they would be fairly obvious.

if anyone would like to have a copy of the rough draft, as it were, of this old testament work in rtf format I'm glad to put some effort into it and generate one as a gift to my brothers in Christ.

Kind regards,

MJ

This does sound familiar now that you say this. I have a copy of Moffatt with some bits of Job in it. I'll check in the am on the main computer and see just how much of it is there.

For private use I don't believe that there would be any issue to use this but based on the rumor of a possible copyright holder I wouldn't circulate except as one would amongst close friends.

Do you know if there is a copy in Esword format containing this old testament material?

I could possibly put a script together to parse this old testament text into an rtf for use with Brent's tooltips.

#44056 Tools to create a bbl file for an older version esword

Posted by MJ_ on 15 February 2023 - 09:23 PM

;;If you are working with an existing .BBL file that is in a database format that is too old for Microsoft ;;Access, you could also try the program "MDB Viewer Plus" from:

Thank you very much for your input on these. This sounds like a very interesting approach.

Given the time I may be able to implement what you have suggested.

May God bless,

#44055 Tools to create a bbl file for an older version esword

Posted by MJ_ on 15 February 2023 - 09:20 PM

If you have a way you can create a .bblx, then I think you should be able to convert to .bbl using Simple Bible Reader, if I am not mistaken. Unless Simple Bible Reader has dropped support for .bbl files. I haven't used it for a few years.

Thank you so much for your feedback on this. I was able to get a copy of the Simple Bible Reader.

Running under windows 10 I had great difficulty getting it to run. Even though this version of windows tries to emulate prior versions to some extent.

i've passed on the information about this tool to the friend that needs it.

I'm expecting to upgrade my system in the next few days and it may be that that install of windows will properly emulate the operating environment allowing me to utilize the tool for myself.

Kind regards and may God keep you in these last days of Satans world.

I just recently started using esword on my android advice.

It really makes the phone useful.

There is no better way to spend time on your phone than by using the esword app.

#18349 e-Sword 10.2 Sneak Peak [Now Released]

Posted by MJ_ on 26 August 2013 - 01:38 PM

While relatively minor, these additional features should be well received by all. The .cmtx viewing for all comments in a chapter when no chapter level content exists will be especially useful.

I agree, the most relevant to me is the commentary chapter logic.  Great idea. Good feature.

#15574 Lange's Commentary for e-Sword

Posted by MJ_ on 01 February 2013 - 05:24 PM

This revision wasn't too bad. The original module was a lot of work to get it into e-Sword format--and I didn't even digitize the text. I can't fathom the amount of work required to digitize that much material with the Greek and the Hebrew. It would have never happened without the text already digitized.

Have to agree on that. With my own efforts on some projects, hours and hours are needed just to get text formats in order and spelled checked is a very time consuming task.

With the size of langes' being what it is. I expect there will be typo's and minor updates needed to perfect it over time.  And well worth the effort I might add..

#15468 Toolbars on 4 lines?

Posted by MJ_ on 25 January 2013 - 09:25 PM

Can the toolbars be moved to two lines?  They take up a lot of vertical space.

Good question!  the toolbars do take up a lot of space.. Common complaint I think.

Not so much of a problem if you use one or more of your windows as flyouts rather than leaving them open all the time.

Was just commenting on the constant resizing of computing devices. Make them tiny, make them a little bigger add keyboards.. a cycle we seemt o go through. big to little back to bigger. Of course more and more powerful and advanceds.. Great variety I guess. Great to have this kind of technology. It's one saving grace is it's abiltiy to help with bible study and the promoting of God's work..
